Question #: 1002

Question: Do you have a vacuum hold down solution for the 4x8 router kit?

Current Solution

This would be a great submission to the R&D section. You can make the request by going in the R&D section: https://www.buildyourcnc.com/ResDev.aspx and logging in and describing the request using the title and description fields and pressing the submit button.

  • Do you have wood holders for switching my Black Toe from router to spindle?

You will need a Z-axis mount for Spindle if you are currently using a router.

  • How feasible would a vacuum hold-down system be for a vertical CNC like the greenLean?

Building a vacuum table, for any CNC machine is possible but doing it right might take a adequate amount of information and extensive planning. Depending on the overall complexity you want to build.
Example, you want sections, and valves that can be operated to close sections of the table to allow vacuum to a specific spot of you material.
It is possible and would be a very precise method to hold down your material.

    Additional Information:
Thanks. It may be something I'd like to try on my greenLean at some point. Dan Spangler wrote a nice article on building a "Universal" CNC vacuum table in the latest issue of Make magazine, volume 41.

  • Do you have a laser kit that can be fitted onto another brand CNC router?

We don't have a laser kit to retrofit another CNC router other than ours, but we can create one. Some things that may help:

    - You are located close to use so we can work closely with you to implement to retrofit,
    - or you can provide very detailed drawings or measurements so we can use them to create the necessary parts for the kit.

Other things that you need to understand:

    - A laser has a number of parts that will bulk up the head of the CNC router causing a bit more inertia which may require lowering the acceleration for smooth ramping up and down of the velocity

    - The bulk of the parts required for the laser may restrict the travel of the x and/or y axes.

    - The nozzle of the laser will be offset from the end mill of the spindle.

Can you tell me the brand of the CNC router that you would like to stick a laser on? (you can answer by submitting additional information.

  • do you sale the G-codes for 4x8 cnc router

The blackToe machine is offered as a kit only. We do have a machine that is build form plans. The plans refer to the scratch build machine: http://www.buildyourcnc.com/cnckitintro.aspx and the one in the book "Build Your Own CNC Machine": http://www.buildyourcnc.com/Book.aspx

  • Can the vertical CNC router do about what a horizontal router can, like cutting out 3/4" cabinet doors from a 4'X8' formica clad sheet? If so, how do you hold it - with Vacuum? Is a vacuum system available?

Our hold down method is screws. For a 4'x8' 3/4" sheet, we use 6 screws around the perimeter of the sheet. This provides sufficient hold down for milling. For the vertically oriented machine, the sheet also rests on a small ledge, making it easy for the board to maintain position while fastening.

  • Do you sell the cooling solution for the liquid cooled spindle 2.2kw.

We are going to add a cooling solution very soon to the website. I am awaiting inventory of Fan and Radiators.

The cooling units that we will be offering are the ones shown in the two pictures here:

  • Do you have a larger kit for the Blacktooth Laser? I need a laser with at least 80watts of power.

We have one in the works. It is a 4'x8' machine that will house the 80w laser tube on the gantry. The machine is bout 2 months out as of 1/7/2014.

  • I have a planetcnc USB controller to run my project and when I start the 240v router the USB connection shuts down.

The USB controller will only work with the Planet-CNC software. This software is well made and will provide great functionality. The planet-cnc software delivers instructions to the microcontroller on the board and the microcontroller will send out the pulse trains needed to move the machine correctly.

There are two main alternatives if you want to use the mach3 software:
First, get a parallel port card and add it to your computer and get a parallel breakout board. If you have a laptop/notebook computer, this will not be possible.
Second, if you have a laptop, or really want to use the USB as the main interface for controlling the machine, you will need to get the smoothstepper board which works with mach3. The price combination is much higher than the USB controller with planet-cnc, but will work with Mach3.

    Additional Information:
The planet cnc controller can be prone to electrical interference and has been known to cause such problems. In the first instance try to use a quality double sheilded USB cable, hopefully this will fix your problem. Alternatively you may need to sheild your limit switch, estop and or motor cabling. My pick is that a quality USB cable will fix it though, worked for me.

  • Do you have a wiring diagram for your breakout board and the SuperPID?

It is not necessary for a wiring diagram for the breakout board to the SuperPID controller since you are only going to connect two wires from the breakout board output terminals of your choosing to the SuperPID controller. The only thing remaining is to configure Mach3 so that the spindle control section serves as the SuperPID controller.

To setup this configuration in Mach3, go to your ports and pins dialog box (config menu -> ports and pins). Click on the spindle setup tab. In the Motor Control Section of the dialog, check the box for Use Spindle Motor Output and check the box for PWM control. Change the PWM Base Frequency to 50Hz.
