Current Solution

We are using the 1/2" rods in the gantry now. You can opt to purchase 1/2" rods and new gantry sides which will accept 1/2" ID bearings.

  • HOW DO I SQUARE MY CNC MACHINE OR GANTRY?

    I use a standard large "L" square used in construction. I run gantry up and down with the bit along one side of the square to make the square aligned with the x-axis. I then run the bit along the other edge and if I see space from the edge of the bit to the square, I adjust the gantry square by loosening and tightening the eye bolts that hold the chain at the ends of the table. Repeat as necessary to get the desired square.

    I'm not sure what you mean by XP. Can you clarify? Thanks.

    All stepper motors must be wired to their own stepper motor driver. If two motors need to be driven by one signal (say there are two X motors) then the two drivers will be connected to same CP (pulse or step) and CW (direction) pins on the control interface. If the two motors need to turn in opposite directions, then swap the A and B coil connections.

    The 651 oz/in NEMA 34 stepper motor does have a dual shaft. The shaft extends 19 mm at both ends.

  • How do I adjust the gantry/router mount so it is perpendicular on a Blacktoe machine.

    Simple ways to get the z-axis router/spindle mount to be perpendicular to the table, you will have to get a level. Set the z-axis in place although you will have to remove it to tighten the top screws which will hold the top router/spindle mounts on the z-axis but you will be able to tighten the lower mount without having to remove the entire z-axis.

    It's not the Router that is out. It's the Z Axis, Y Axis not being perpendicular to the table. One of the problems was the double washer on the back side of the top rail V bearing. I took them off and ground down the screw head instead. Your instructions for building the Black Toe/Foot are NON EXISTENT, for want of a better word. I have buyers remorse.

    If error shows at ramp up or at constant speed:
    1. Check for a short circuit or partial short circuit and the insulation of the output wire is sufficient.
    2. Increase the capacity or the inverter if it is too small. Replace with an inverter that has a larger capacity
    3. Extend the ramp-up time
    4. Decrease the torque and increase the set value.
    5. Check if the motor is blocked and if there is a sudden change in load.
    6. Check if there is a sudden chance in the power supply voltage.
    7. Extend ramp down time
    9. DC breaking is too high. Decrease DC breaking
    10. Replace the inverter.
    11. Check to see if there is a short circuit with the connection wire of the motor.
    12. Extend the ramp-down time or add a breaking resistor.
    13. Check the mains supply voltage and insure there isn't ant sudden change in voltage.
    14. Send the inverter for repair.
    15. Check whether the input voltage is normal
    16. check whether there is a sudden change in load.
    17. Check whether there is any phase missing.
    18. Check the fan in the inverter. Is it spinning? Is it blocked? Does it have any foreign matter stuck on the fins of the fan? If so, clear the fan.
    19. Check the ambient temperature in the space that the inverter is placed.
    20. Check for adequate ventilation for the inverter where it is placed.
    21. Check for jamming or any sudden change with respect to mechanical load.
    22. Set the V/F curve correctly.

    24. The motor is hot and the insulation of the motor degraded.
    25. Check if the voltage has a large variance.
    26. Check if there is a phase missing.

  • MY PARTS ARE COMING OUT THE WRONG SIZE

    In Mach3, go to the Settings Tab, and select "Set Steps Per Unit". It will ask you how far to move the machine. Before you do this, make a mark on the table exactly where the end mill is resting. You can do this by lowering the end mill until it touches the material, then spinning it by hand to cut a small dimple in the material. Then, raise the end mill to clear the material, and assign a distance to move the machine. Once the machine moves and stops, measure the exact distance that it actually traveled with a tape measure, and enter this value into the dialog box that asks how far it moved. Mach3 will automatically adjust your steps per unit for that axis to be more accurate. Do this for all axes often to ensure you are cutting accurately. The longer distances you use calibrate, and the more precise you are with your measurements, the better.

    The blackFoot CNC machine kit does not include a table. The table can be made as long or shot as you need. for instance, if you are looking for a travel of 4 fet x 4 feet, then the table will need to be about 6 feet long to get the full 4 feet of travel.

    The electronics are very straight forward using the connection diagram for the breakout board that you select. Use the videos for a general idea and then use the connection diagram to verify the correct connections for the interface of your choosing.

    Yes,the USB interface replaces the breakout board, but remember that you will need to use the planet-cnc software with the USB interface.

    The electronics does accompany the cnc machine kits as long as you select the option "with electronics". There are option to purchase the machines without electronics and that would be necessary if you either have your own electronics, or you prefer the plug and play cnc computer system we call the redLeaf, or redSprout. This will also be necessary if you prefer the electronics that use the USB interface rather than the parallel interface.

  • THESE MACHINES ARE DANGEROUS, WHAT DO DO?

    These machines are inherently dangerous. Before the machine moves, the machine should be clear of any person by a dimension of at the distance of a persons reach plus a few more feet. This is the policies we institute in our shop and what is recommend to all of our customers. Treat these machines as you would treat any major power tool in the shop.

    With that said, you can certainly add some protective parts, but still keep folks away even with those installed. I would use the gantry side to do all of the mounting of the protective parts. Consider using sheet metal that you can bend and make a simple installation right on the gantry side.

  • What are the tolerances of your machines?

    The tolerance of our machines, like any machine, depends on several variables. The major variables include the manufacturing tolerance, the type of machine control used, the precision of assembly, the thoroughness of maintenance, and the initial and ongoing calibration of the machine. Because we sell kits only most of these variables are outside our control. Therefore, we are hesitant to guarantee a certain level of tolerance for an end user. However, in our experience, tolerances of .001" are readily achievable with our machines.

    We actually do very little tinkering with our production machine. The wood has a very small coefficient of linear expansion as compared to metals and plastic, so calibration is reduced to a very infrequent state.

    As with all machines, the determination of backlash in all parts of the machine is important, managing the tightening of these points of adjustment is necessary, but are still done infrequently.
