Question: What is your largest format cnc router

Current Solution

The largest CNC machine we make at this time (12/04/2015) is the GreenBull 6'x12' model. This model has 2 options for Z-axis travel.

The short-z option has a total Z travel of 5.75 inches. From that you would subtract the length of the end mill used and the thickness of the spoil board to determine the maximum material thickness. (Example: If the end mill extends 1.25" from the collet and the spoil board is .75", then the material could be up to 5.75 - 1.25 - 0.75 = 3.75 inches in thickness). This is good for most sheet-type materials.

The long-z option, used mainly for large 3D carvings, requires a custom frame and allows for up to 36" of travel.

  • What is the cut accuracy of the large format routers using roller chain? .005"?

    Accuracy is generally function of how well the machine will match the measurements of what is designed on a computer on a computer. However, if you are looking for the resolution of the machine, you can calculate the steps per inch using the formula:
    Steps / inch
    = ((motor steps) * (micro steps)) / ((tooth pitch) * (number of teeth))

    Depending on the micro steps and the drive sprocket (or drive pulley) you are using, you can achieve a wide range of resolutions.

    With our machines, you can easily achieve .001 resolution, but accuracy will be best achieved with proper calibration.

    The tolerance of our machines, like any machine, depends on several variables. The major variables include the manufacturing tolerance, the type of machine control used, the precision of assembly, the thoroughness of maintenance, and the initial and ongoing calibration of the machine. Because we sell kits only most of these variables are outside our control. Therefore, we are hesitant to guarantee a certain level of tolerance for an end user. However, in our experience, tolerances of .001" are readily achievable with our machines.

    1.) Machine is calibrated with a precision six foot steel scale at 30” measurement and appears to be right on the dimension under no load condition.

    2.) When cutting a test program of a rectangle Y 12” x X 6” the final cut dimensions are:
    X = 5.946 (-.054) short and Y = 11.900 (-.100) short.
    This is a chain drive machine using your small chain stock.
    Can chain tension be part of the issue or am I missing something????
    Have made several cuts with reduced feed and depth of cuts. No change in errors……

    This is a machine of my own design that I built using your electronics package purchased in 2010. Including your five start Z axis lead screw and your small chain with spur gears package for the x and y axis. this machine is designed to fit that floor space of my shop. Last year I sent you folks a photo of the unit. It has hardened steel X,Y and Z rails not the aluminum rails that you offer. it is also made from Baltic Burch 3/4" plywood.

    When cutting a test program of a rectangle Y 12” x X 6” the final cut dimensions are:
    X = 5.946 (-.054) short and Y = 11.900 (-.100) short

    There is a dimensional discrepancy from programmed dimension and the actual cut dimension???? what could cause this issue????

  • I'm new to CNC and just finish building my router.I need software for my post processor and not sure if your product is what I need?

    You will need a CNC software that will control your router cnc machine, and your design CAD/CAM software will need to know the CNC software you plan on using so the post processor in the CAM software can create the g-code for the CNC control software. So if you have for example, Mach 3 and our parallel breakout board, you can use the Mach 3 post processor in your design software.

    The USB interface that we sell only works with planet-cnc software. We will be developing our own USB board and plug-in that will work with Mach4 very soon.

    Planet-CNC is the control software. If you decide to use the USB controller, you will need to use the planet-CNC software as the control software. You will be able to use any of the CAM software applications with the planet-CNC control software.

  • How complete are your cnc router kits?

    Our kits include all of the parts needed to put a whole working machine together. However, understand that the kits are quite advanced and require a good level of mechanical competence to be completed correctly. We offer assembled machines for those that can't assemble these machines due to their complexity and need for fastening the overall components in a way that there is good smooth and tight motion, minimizing backlash to the fullest.

    We do have a few kits that you need to supply the table which include the greenBull 4x,5x and 6x, and the blackFoot. The tables would be far to large and heavy to ship. Our greenBull Kit is our best selling machine. All of the other machines are all inclusive.

    The plans/hardware/electronics/mechanical includes everything but the wood structural components that can be cut by the customer. This plans/hardware option includes all of the electronics, like motors, drivers, controller, and all of the cables and wires to connect all of the electronics together. The mechanical components include shafts, couplings, linear rails, bearing blocks, sprockets, lead screws, etc. The hardware consists of all of the screws nuts, insert nuts, cross dowels, etc, to assemble all of the structural, mechanical, and electronics together.

  • I couldn't find any information about how to mount the "z-axis lead screw in the book" (Build Your Own CNC)

    The details will differ depending on the type of lead screw you use.

    For allthread lead screws, you will need the 1/2" square nut, 1/2" allthread lead screw, two 1/4" screws and nuts to hold the square nut in place, two 1/2" ID bearings, two standard 1/2" nuts, and one coupling hub.

    Attach the square nut to the nut support using the two 1/4" screw and nuts. The bearings will need to be inserted into the seats of the lower and upper part of the z-axis. Insert the lead screw through the top bearing. Use one of the standard 1/2" nuts and start threading it on the allthread screw just below the bearing. Lower the lead screw to the square nut and start to screw the lead screw into the square nut. Continue until the screw is near the lower bearing. Add another standard 1/2" nut to the screw and keep turning the screw until the screw just passes the lower bearing. Add the coupling hub to the top of the screw just above the upper bearing. Turn the lower and upper standard 1/2" nuts until they are snug against the bearing. If the standard 1/2" nuts become loosened, consider adding another nut to each end against the existing nut to keep them in place.

    For 1/2" acme 5 start lead screws, you will need to use an antibacklash nut in place of the square nut. This nut attaches with a flange using two #8 screws and nuts. The standard 1/2" nuts are replaced by clamping collars.

    A standard 40W CO2 laser will cut up to 1/4" thick of material, be it wood, acrylic, card stock, leather, fabric, foam, cork, etc. (Decent speed and final cut are heavily dependent on a strong air assist upgrade)

    Metals cannot be cut due to the power level and wavelength of the CO2 laser. But it can be marked with special solutions like Cermark or Thermark.

  • Can I put a laser on my cnc router that I didn't purchase from buildyourcnc?

    We don't have a laser kit to retrofit another CNC router other than ours, but we can create one. Some things that may help:

    - You are located close to use so we can work closely with you to implement to retrofit,
    - or you can provide very detailed drawings or measurements so we can use them to create the necessary parts for the kit.

    Other things that you need to understand:

    - A laser has a number of parts that will bulk up the head of the CNC router causing a bit more inertia which may require lowering the acceleration for smooth ramping up and down of the velocity

    - The bulk of the parts required for the laser may restrict the travel of the x and/or y axes.

    - The nozzle of the laser will be offset from the end mill of the spindle.

  • What is the benefit to using a spindle over a standard router?

    This solution will refer to the water cooled spindles that we sell. Generally, routers are air cooled which push air downwards through the router to cool the router motor. This has an undesirable effect for CNC machines that will blow the dust and chips into the air. The water cooled spindle will not blow since it uses water to cool the spindle motor. This allows the chips and dust to be confined within the dust shoe and get removed by the vacuum. Additionally, standard routers have a sound level that far exceeds that of the spindle.

  • My router runs in mirror image on the Y axis only so what can I do?

    If you are using Mach3, go into the config menu, , Ports and Pins, and click the motor outputs tab. On the line for the axis you want to change the direction, toggle the DirStepLowActive box. This will reverse the direction of the axis.
