### Question #: 13497

Question: What size collet can the 2.2kW spindle use?

Current Solution

All of our spindles come standard with a 1/4" collet. The 2.2kw, and 4.0kw, can be upgraded to a 1/2" collet with a separate purchase.

### Other Possible Solutions to this Question

• What collet size comes with the 2.2kw spindle?

All of our spindles come standard with a 1/4" collet. The 2.2kw, and 4.0kw, can be upgraded to a 1/2" collet with a separate purchase.

What collet size comes with the 2.2kw spindle?

• What wire size to use from VFD to 2.2kW spindle?

We use 16 AWG wires between the spindle and the VFD. This wire size has a maximum capacity for 22 Amps, a good buffer to eliminate any possibility for overheating. The 2.2kW using 220V may draw up to 10 Amps (220 x 10 = 2200).

That is, all three wires are sharing the total current draw.

• What size collet comes with your spindles?

• WHAT SIZE COLLET IS IN YOUR 1.5 KILOWATT SPINDLE?

The collet in the 1.5 kW spindle is an ER-11 and cannot reach the 1/2" size. I would consider the 2.2 kW spindle instead.

• What size of wire do you use to connect the VFD to the spindle?

The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.

• on the 2.2Kw water cooled spindle, what is the cooling port thread type and size?

It is an M8 metric size on the port going into the spindle, and a 1/4" compression on the other side.

Is the M8 port a M8x1.25 or M8x1?

If you are referring to the book build, use a chamfer bit that is large enough to create a chamfer for most of the edge of the 3/4" thickness of the board, but still has a sliver of space for the bearing on which to ride.

Mine is M8x1mm. I replaced the stock fitting with a brass hose barb and used "steel wire reinforced vacuum hose" with a 1/4" ID because it resists kinking and collapsing.

• What is the liquid input and output barb size on your 2.2kw water cooled spindle?

The spindle water inlet and outlet fittings are 1/4 Inside Diameter and 3/8 Outside Diameter.

• Is the 4kv spindle constructed using two or four bearings and what size collets are included with the spindle/vfd combo?

Yes, all of the spindles come with collets. The collets have a 1/4" (6.35mm) bore for end mills that have a 1/4" shank. The ER specification is different for the 1.5kW (ER-11) and the 2.2kW (ER-20).

• My Question is about the 2.2kw spindle, because the thread start is so small I have a hard time centering the collet before it binds from tighting what have others done to overcome this

Can you see any damage to the beginning of the thread on the shaft of the spindle, or any damage to the thread on the inside of the collet nut?

There is no damage, I cannot put a tool in without removing the nut and collet when I go to tighten it, it starts to seat the collet and if I cannot hold the tool just right it is off center

• What is the warranty on your 2.2KW spindle

We honor a one year warranty on most parts like main machine components, structural parts, mechanical parts and some electronic parts including spindles.

• What are the noise levels of the 1.5 Kw and 2.2Kw spindles?

The noise level of the 1.5 kW and the 2.2 kW are very similar. The noise level is considerably quieter than typical routers. I am going to add sound db levels to this FAQ a bit later.

The db (decibels) reading for the spindle is 70 and an 890 Porter Cable router (a lower powered tool than the spindle) measured 90 db. Both measurements were taken in the same environment and measured at the same distance from the tool.

Practically silent. The inverter makes more noise!
