Question: Do you know what drivers the xylotex control boxes have

    We still use Mach3 with a parallel port. We are looking into newer boards with USB/ethernet communication.

    Yes, you can use any two of the output terminals of the breakout board to control the SuperPID closed loop router controller (a diagram is not needed with these instructions).

    One output terminal will be used as an on/off (1/0 or 5v/gnd) that will be invoked with the M3/M4/M5 M-codes in your g-code instructions.

    The other terminal will be connected to either another 5v/gnd signal to control speed for 5000/20000 rpm or for PWM output (recommended) for proportional speed control.

    To setup this configuration in Mach3, go to your ports and pins dialog box (config menu -> ports and pins). Click on the spindle setup tab. In the Motor Control Section of the dialog, check the box for Use Spindle Motor Output and check the box for PWM control. Change the PWM Base Frequency to 50Hz.

  • I have a 64 bit operating system and the Mach3 usb control board. What do i need to communicate between the two?

    You will need a USB cable to connect the computer and the Mach3 USB. The 64-bit operating system must be Windows and you will need the Mach3 CNC control software installed on the operating system.

    You will need to install the USB driver called RNRMotion.dll. You can find the driver here: https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-electronic-component-breakout-Mach3-USB-Board

    Move the file to your Mach3 Plugins folder Example: "C:/Users/ProgramFiles/Mach3/Plugins"

    Mach3 will prompt you to select a driver and this is where you can select the "RnRMotionController" and check "Don't ask me again". This will allow your board to communicate with Mach3.

    On that page, you will need to download the XML Mach3 Config File by right clicking on the link and selecting "save as". Save the Mach3Mill.xml file in your Mach3 root folder.

    That file is the main configuration file for the Mach3 board. It has all of the typical settings that the Mach3 board needs.

    The size of the stepper motor is measured in holding torque, generally oz/in. You will determine the torque loads of your axes when selecting steppers. Once you know which stepper you need, the drivers and controller board are simple to pair with them.

    LinuxCNC has excellent documents; however, I would like to offer our help in case you don't understand the information on that page. So, please use this FAQ (Question #: 13233) to state your questions by submitting additional information below.

    After reading the LinuxCNC page my first questions would be can the spindle be controlled by PWM signal? Also, what pin on the parallel port would I set to Spindle Enable and FRW?

    Additional Information:
    To connect your computer to the VFD, use a USB to RS-485 interface. RS-485 is just a serial interface protocol that uses standard 0 to +5 voltage TTL signal levels for communication (as opposed to RS-232 which uses -12v and +12 for signal level changes).

    Get a high quality interface to reduce any issues during the process. The VFD should have two terminals labeled RS+ and RS-. The USB to RS-485 adapter should have this labeled on it as well so the connections should be relatively straight forward.

    In the VFD parameters:
    PD001: 2 to accept RS485 commands
    PD002: 2 to accept frequency comands
    PD163: 1 to RS485 slave address:1
    PD164: 1 RS485 baud rate 9600
    PD165: 3 8bit, no parity, 1 stop bit

    Make sure LinuxCNC is also set accordingly:

    The PIN14 and PIN16 in the stepconf wizard should be set to unused because you don't want LinuxCNC to be outputting unnecessary signals.

    In the options step of the stepconf wizard:
    - Check the Include Halui user interface component.
    - Check the Include custom PyVCP GUI panel.
    - Check Spindle speed display

    You will want to edit the custom.hal text file located in the folder that was created from the stepconf wizard. Add these following lines:
    loadusr -Wn vfd hy_vfd -n vfd -d /dev/ttyUSB0 -p none -r 9600
    net spindle-cmd-rpm-abs => vfd.speed-command
    net spindle-cw motion.spindle-forward => vfd.spindle-forward
    net spindle-ccw motion.spindle-reverse => vfd.spindle-reverse
    net on motion.spindle-on => vfd.spindle-on

    The dev folder in linux is typically used for interfacing devices and peripherals to the computer as these devices are communicated by simple memory addresses and these files are linked directly to these addresses.

    Under the custom_postgui.hal file, change this line:

    from: sets spindle-at-speed true
    to: net spindle-at-speed => cfd.spindle_at_speed

    and add the line:

    setp vfd.enable 1

    When you start LinuxCNC, you will a spindle section with the reverse and forward buttons, a stop button and - and + buttons. Use these buttons to conform that the spindle is functioning properly. The spindle speed indicator in LinuxCNC will show the spindle speed and you can confirm that this is equal to the speed indicated on the VFD.

    Unfortunately not. As much as we like the Planet-CNC software and control, they made a change in their Planet-CNC software that eliminates support for our board.

    Dealing with our USB BoB, the potentiometer that will be used in the key jog, is a 5V, 5k - 10k Ohm potentiometer.

  • When using the laser controller, what does "engrave beyond border limit" mean?

    LaserCAD: Engrave beyond border limit.

    This is caused by a sweeping motion that is too fast and where the acceleration is too slow. My recommended action would be to keep the acceleration the way it is and slow down the speed of the engrave sweeping motion. I typically use around 200-300 mm/sec and make sure that the axis sweep motion is the nozzle along the gantry, not the gantry itself. The gantry will have too much inertia to sweep, but the nozzle is very light and can sweep very quickly.

    Specifically, what is happening with the engrave beyond border limit is where that axis is not able to slow down fast enough to not hit the border. For instance, imagine a car going 100 mph and it needs to stop within 30 feet. This would not be possible because the deceleration is not high enough.

    No, the laser controller does not run standard g-code. Instead it uses a version of a printer control language which provides optimal results when processing detailed images and designs. If you need or want to control your laser with g-code, however, you can do so by running it from a computer using a standard machine control software. You can even set your laser up to operate both ways. Feel free to contact us directly if you need help sorting through your options.

    The BobCAD post processor that will work with the USB interface that uses the Planet-CNC software:

    According to the Planet-cnc folks, wincnc or mach3 post-processors should work. According to a representative at BobCAD, mach3 post-processor should work.

    You are making the right choice. The overall cost benefit of a spindle over a router is worth the change. We used a router back in 2008-2012 and constantly replaced it due to the daily use, but we are still using the same spindle we began using back in 2012.
