Question #: 14270

Question: x and y on plasma does not work but x and y on mill does work. why?

Current Solution

I assume you are referring to Mach3 mill versus mach3 plasma. These are two xml files that contain settings for "mill" and "plasma".

If the machine moves (the stepper motors are moving and the drivers are receiving signals from the controller) in the settings for mill, but are not moving in the plasma settings, then you need to deeply investigate the settings and make sure they are exactly the same in the:
- motor outputs tab of ports and pins dialog box
- port address in the ports and pins dialog box

If you are just trying to move it manually, make sure the jog button is "on" in the program run tab. Press the tab button to reveal the mach3 pendant screen and make sure the jog is set to continuous.

  • DOES THE SOFTWARE WORK ON AN APPLE?

There are several CAD/CAM programs out there for MacOS. Here is a list of a few: http://www.macuser.de/forum/f53/3d-2d-cad-395058/#post4499316
I've also read good things about punchCAD: http://www.punchcad.com/
Of course, there is always SketchUp if you are in a pinch. There are a few CAM plugins for SketchUp as well, but I've never used them, so I can't vouch for them.

CAD/CAM will get you as far as designing your parts and producing the g-code, but if you also want to run the CNC machine with your Mac, you will need a piece of software similar to Mach3 or EMC to run the g-code. I haven't been able to find anything like these programs that runs on Mac, so you may have to run Mach3 or EMC in Windows using Boot Camp or a virtual machine such as VMware or Parallels.

Personally, I would use the Mac to do all the CAD/CAM, then use a cheap PC to run the CNC machine.

  • why did the laser on my blacktooth slowly lose it's power during a cut? Currently does not fire. X/Y jogs fine.

There could have been a small, slow leak in the tube, releasing the CO2 gas. The power supply could have also suffered from an electrical issue.

  • MY COMPUTER DOES NOT HAVE A PARALLEL PORT. WHAT DO I NEED?

If your computer does not have a parallel port, all you will need is a low cost PCI parallel adapter card (these can be found on amazon for $15-$20). If you plan on using a laptop (not recommended) you can try to find a PCMCIA parallel adapter, but many people have frequent issues with this setup. A more expensive solution would be to purchase a USB smooth stepper board. Unfortunately, we do not supply any of these adapters and cannot attest to their reliability.

  • WHAT DOES THE GREENBULL KIT INCLUDE AND DO I NEED TO INCLUDE?

The greenBull 4X comes with all of the components and electronics to assemble the gantry of the machine. You will need to build the table. We provide the rails and roller chain for the X-axis (along the length of the table for full 8 feet of travel). You will need to provide some wire to connect the electronics and a computer to run the machine. You will also need to purchase the software that you will need to run the machine that matches how you will apply the machine. We suggest the mach3 control program. The CAM program is up to you as there are many options out there.

  • WHY SHOULD I REGISTER MY WORK IF COPYRIGHT PROTECTION AUTOMATIC?

Registration is recommended for a number of reasons. Many choose to register their works because they wish to have the facts of their copyright on the public record and have a certificate of registration. Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney's fees in successful litigation. Finally, if registration occurs within 5 years of publication, it is considered prima facie evidence in a court of law.

  • CAN YOUR PRODUCTS OF MACHINES BE USED TO CREATE PLASMA TABLE?

The plasma nozzle must be close to the cutting area and you will need some way to keep the nozzle at the right level with some type of device. The spray is downward, so you will need a contained area with a sheet of water at the bottom to extinguish he spray. You should have no problem using our machines for this application since you would need to product the table bed.

  • IT POSSIBLE TO BUY THE CAD FILES FOR BLACK FOOT MACHINE, MECHANICAL PARTS AND ELECTRONICS BUT NOT WOODEN PARTS, SAVE SHIPPING COSTS? IN THAT CASE I WOULD INSTRUCT SOMEONE MILL ME.

The files and hardware option for our machines has been removed from the site due to the following reasons:
Difficulty for the end use of the files and the challenges (and time/money) on our side to assist in using these files.
The abuse of these files over the internet.
Ultimately may reduce the sales of machines keeping us in business.
Sadly, this is what has come out of our company attempting to be open; however, the machines sold on this site is still far lower in price than the competition for the quality that we provide as we have a great desire to engender the cottage industry to fulfill their need for low end manufacturing. My sincere apologies if this causes any inconvenience.

  • My x and y motors are on each end of my gantry do I wire each motor to the same XP

I'm not sure what you mean by XP. Can you clarify? Thanks.

All stepper motors must be wired to their own stepper motor driver. If two motors need to be driven by one signal (say there are two X motors) then the two drivers will be connected to same CP (pulse or step) and CW (direction) pins on the control interface. If the two motors need to turn in opposite directions, then swap the A and B coil connections.
