We are developing a 4 foot by 8 foot (48" x 96") laser with 80 watts of power. If you need a laser at 36" x 52", you could use the 4'x8' laser and just build a shorter table. We will have this machine available in the latter portion of 2015.

Converting a 3D file to be used with a CNC machine will depend on the capability of the software you are using for developing machine operations (CAM software). For instance, if you use CAMBAM and the operation will consider a typical 3 axis CNC machine without a 4th axis, you would simply load the 3D file (.3ds or .stl) and apply a 3D profile machining operation on the 3D object. No conversion is necessary.

Check the capabilities of the CAM software you are using. You may just be able to load up the 3D file and start using it.

If you don't have your 3D file in the specified format (i.e. .3ds or .stl) then you will need to find a converter to convert the file into the file format that is compatible with your CAM software which should be relatively easy to find on the internet for free.

I have your mach3 USB BoB, do you guys sell a torch control relay I can wire up to turn my plasma torch on and off and how I would wife that too this BoB?

If one or more motor is not responding, please follow the troubleshooting directions below:

For parallel Bob only! Make sure both the parallel and USB are connected.

Re-check wiring, and connections for continuity (no breaks in the wires) and check for correct wiring locations from driver to BoB.
Check dip switch settings on the driver.
Check components, by swapping the motors (ex. y-axis motor to z or x-axis driver and z or x-axis motor to y-axis driver) to check if motor functions on another driver.
Depending on software check step low active (mach 3) or invert pulse (planet-cnc) for the axis which is not responding.

Stepper motors are known to make different type of noises when in motion. So there should be no issues in regards to accuracy with the steppers. You also might be able to lower the noise that comes from the motors, by adjusting the acceleration and velocity of the motors. This usually tends to either make different noises or lowers the pitch of the noises.

My Nema 24 motors make high pitched alarm sound when changing directions quickly - what could be the cause? Red LED is lit on Microstep Driver CW230 but everything seems to run fine - is this a problem?

You will probably need to use the Mach3 USB board with Mach3. We have not tested the Mach3 usb card with Mach4.

Fusion 360 is a program that allows you to design in a parametric 3 dimensional environment and also provides a great CAM toolset. Fusion 360 will produce the gcode with the CAM capabilities. The gcode is used to move the machine in various ways in order to mill the material; however, software is needed to interpret this gcode and cause the machine to move according to the gcode instructions. This is called control software. So Fusion is CAD/CAM, and you still need "control". Mach3 is one example of control software for milling and is highly recommended.

Install Mach3 onto the computer that will connect to the redFly(CNC electronics), then configure the Mach3 parameters for the machine (motor tuning, plug-ins, inputs/output, etc.). Home the machine, load the gcode into Mach3 and the machine will move according to the gcode.

A word of caution, since you are new to CNC machines, make sure you familiar yourself with the machine and the movements of the machine specific to how the gcode is arranged with respect to the coordinates of the machine. Try with very simple gcode until you get a very good understanding of how the machine will move.

Hello, My friend has purchased the Redfly and I am helping him a little with it. We are both very new to CNC. I am using fusion 360 at the moment. This can tool path and create gcode. I was wondering if Mach 3 or similar is still needed. Is there a tutorial you could point me to that explains how to get the Gcode from the PC, via Serial to the Redfly?

Getting continuity from the x--/x++ might not mean it is a faulty board, unless they are bridged, so both get a pulse rather than one. But to check if you might have a opposite connection for those input:
Planet-cnc/file/settings/input/invert inputs/input 1/input 2.

In input port section in config. Scroll down and you will see THC On, Up and Down. Enter your input pin numbers there.

Installing THC to my limit ports on the breakout board. Once wired how do I get Mach 3 to reconize the port?

The lead screw must be held in position axially. In other words, you don't want your lead screw to move back and forth at all. This is the only way the coupling hub that is attached to the end of the lead screw could be moving away from its coupling assembly. Depending on the lead screw that you are using, the combination of bearings and collars/nut keep the lead screw in place.

I am almost done with the book build Cnc machine, but when I run the motors from mach 3, the 1/2" coupling comes out of the middle spider (the joiner which connects 1/4 and 1/2" coupling. How do I prevent this?

This is correct. You will need to use a method appropriate for the software you are using. Also remember that NC switches are typically wired in series, while NO switches are normally wired in parallel.

Glycol can be problematic used in chillers unless the chiller is made specifically for glycol. Glycol can become more corrosive over time and cause damage to various parts of the chiller, including the pump. If you frequently change the fluid, you may be safe, but you will want to monitor the condition of the pump and other parts of the chiller. A concentration of 30% glycol and purified deionized water with a pH level between 7.0 and 8.2 will be a good mixture that may prevent corrosion over a period of 2 to 3 months.

Adding more fans will require more power from the power supply. Each fan should have the amps that the fan draws. Add the total amps from the three fans and add one amp for the pump and you will have the total power requirement. The 12V 2amp power supply that accompanies the spindle cooling kit will probably be insufficient for the additional two fans.
