Question #: 6776

Question: which machine is capable of doing hardwood skulls & faces, more than just a flat surface engaving.

Current Solution

Our CNC machines can be used for a variety of setups and projects, and is not limited to just the flat surfacing. However dealing with more complex designs and projects with a complete 3D object then the requirement of a fourth axis might be necessary. Also doing your project in a manner where you engrave/cut it in pieces and glue them together similar to a companion cube that a customer made (https://buildyourcnc.com/tutorials/Example-customer-blacktoe-companion-cube-portal) could be another method to use.

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • Please can you suggest which cutting machine is very suitable to cut vehicle tires of any thickness precisely and neat, thanks

Any of our machines can cut or mill tire material. What you need to consider is the machine size (will the tire fit in the machine with the proper modifications to the table) and the milling tool (end mill) used to mill or cut the tire material. The end mill will need to be specifically designed to mill the volcanized rubber material and the steel belts embedded within the tire.

Can we arrange for a specific modification of cutting the you're like you suggested... The aim is to cut the tires into specified shapes( circular, rectangular or squares) with neat edges. Also would ave the modifications made in other to be able to cut the width of the tires into two there by expising the metal strings in the tires
Please let me know if you get the idea and your take on the modification you think would suffice..
    Thanks.

  • If a person wanted a larger laser machine than what is offered would they simply mount a laser on one of the larger machines, or is there a problem with doing this?

Adding a laser tube and supporting electronics and mirrors to larger milling machines is problematic unless a proper mount is provided, as in the greenBull CNC (https://buildyourcnc.com/item/cnc-machine-laser-spindle-combo-head).

The existing larger machines (other than the greenBull CNC machine) are designed to be used as milling machines and the laser will not be able to be easily mounted on these machines. Modifications can be done to accomplish this task, but there is quite a bit of effort needed.

  • Is the white ant capable of connecting to any other program besides replicator g? Is so which ones?

The whiteAnt has only been tested with the replicatorG application. There is no reason that another program cannot be used as long as the program is compatible with the gen4 electornics.

  • Which spindle should I use for PVC and Trespa (Hardwood)? Max diameter of cutter = 16mm Max thickness plate = 20mm
  • Which controller(DSP or FPGA or other) is best for CNC machine for G code interpreter operations?

It's probably better to use an FPGA or a microcontroller that is clocked (provided by a crystal oscillator) fast enough to simultaneously output pulse trains for the number of axes you intent to drive on the CNC and to provide for other processor operations, like spindle control, processing inputs from the machine and other outputs you may have (mist, coolant, etc.).

    Additional Information:
    Hi,
    Thanks for the information.
Some CNC controllers having both FPGA & DSP. Is there any advantages? What is the role of DSP in this case?

  • Is the Greenlean capable of cutting soft metals like aluminum or brass? Thanks

Yes, the greenLean can cut metals such as aluminum and brass. The gantry and Y carriage was designed to be rigid enough to handle these types of metals. The typical metal cutting techniques should be used, such as high feedrates to reduce heat buildup at the end mill, or the use of cutting fluids or cold air used at the end mill as is necessary with most machines that cut similar metals. This is necessary since the aluminum has a rather low melting point and can clog the end mill.

    Additional Information:
All of our machines are capable of cutting many metals, including steel and aluminum as long as the proper CNC machining operations are used like light fast passes, and if desired, using air cooling for better performance.

Here is a video of one of our customer demonstrating aluminum cutting using air to cool the end mill.

  • Which machine would be best suited to cut intricate patterns into sheets of metal?

The machine that we sell that can cut intricate designs in sheets of metal would be any of our CNC Routers/Machines.
    https://buildyourcnc.com/Item/milling

The main consideration would be the size of the cutting/engraving bed you will need. We have CNC Machines with routing areas ranging from 1'x3' to 6' x 12' or longer.

  • Which electronics package is required for the CNC machine from the book designs?

The book design uses all NEMA 23/24 motors which can be found here:
    https://buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-3axis-425-elcombo

I recommend the Mach3 USB option as you will be able to use the USB connection for control.

If you are planning to build from the plans developed by the folks over at Woodsmith Magazine which is loosely based on the book design, use this electronics package:

  • How do I adjust the gantry/router mount so it is perpendicular on a Blacktoe machine.

Simple ways to get the z-axis router/spindle mount to be perpendicular to the table, you will have to get a level. Set the z-axis in place although you will have to remove it to tighten the top screws which will hold the top router/spindle mounts on the z-axis but you will be able to tighten the lower mount without having to remove the entire z-axis.

    Pending more info.

    Additional Information:
It's not the Router that is out. It's the Z Axis, Y Axis not being perpendicular to the table. One of the problems was the double washer on the back side of the top rail V bearing. I took them off and ground down the screw head instead. Your instructions for building the Black Toe/Foot are NON EXISTENT, for want of a better word. I have buyers remorse.

    Additional Information:
It's still not perpendicular but it's closer.

  • I want to build my first CNC machine for PCB manufacture. I wish to manufacture at most A4 sizes. Which CNC kit do you recommend?

The blueChick would be the perfect machine to iso route PCB boards. The A4 size is 8.3x11.7 inches and the blueChick is 12x36 inches. It's a bit larger, but you would be able to route many more PCBs. I would also recommend getting the 1.5 kW or 2.2 kW spindle for the blueChick since you will want very low runout to make the isolation routes (kerf) between traces very thin.

  • do you sell plans for big machine with chain driven and how much its cost as dxf file which i can cut using cnc

The plans or DXF files are not offered. We sell the machines as kits or fully assembled. The kits are very well priced and will most likely cost less if materials and labor than working from plans (this comes from feedback from many customers that built similar machines from plans).
