Question #: 6825

Question: What's the size and weight of the Blackfoot shipping box or boxes ?

Current Solution

When the items are placed in the shopping cart (clicking Add to Cart, or clicking on the check boxes for the base product and options on the machine page), there will be a small description of the packing dimensions and weight just under the description of the item.

To see these dimensions and weights, just go to "Your Cart" link located at the top left corner of the webpage, the weights and dimensions for each item (i.e. blackFoot CNC Machine, or whatever else you may have in your cart) will be shown just below each item description.

Keep in mind that the shipping prices shown are negotiated rates and not the higher retail rates.

  • Is a dust extraction system included as part of the CNC kit (BlackFoot and GreenBull)?

All our machines are implemented with a dust collection system, includes holders for vacuum hose, and a brush piece that will fit your motor mount to hold as much wood/aluminum/plexi-glass particles in as possible. No vacuum is provided, must be purchased separately.

  • MDF is slightly larger then 4'. Can the Blackfoot handel sheets of MDF (3/4" x 49" x 97")?

The sheets of MDF (3/4" x 49" x 97") will fit in the blackFoot since the cutting surface is 4x8, but the machine itself is a bit larger. However if you were trying to cut the entire sheet(edge to edge), the gantry might not be able to reach the extra 1".

  • Shipping and VAT/customs costs for the Netherlands

This answer helps to provide information on Customs Duty, VAT or Tariff for he Netherlands.

I am not sure of the VAT or customs cost but you can refer to this page for more information: https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontenten/belastingdienst/individuals/abroad_and_customs/receiving_goods_from_abroad/from_organizations_and_companies/how_do_i_calculate_these_import_taxes

Industrial parts don't seem to be listed as a possible customs duty or VAT charge but that probably doesn't mean that it is free. For a full list of tariff charges, go here: https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontenten/belastingdienst/customs/reference_books_and_other_information/working_tariff/working_tariff

The information is in Dutch. If you do find the information, please consider submitting additional information on this FAQ so as to help others.

  • How far does the X axis of the blackfoot travel per turn of the stepper motor ?

The amount traveled per turn in our blackFoot, will be dependent on the steps per inch settings that you will implement to your drivers and within the software (mach3 (ex)) motor tunning: steps per inch/ 1422.22, 1/4 on your driver will give you a different distance if used as 1/2 or 1/8 etc.

Here is a in depth tutorial on how to find the correct steps per inch for a specifications: (

  • If I purchase the blackFoot and the Plug and Play system will it come with 2 sets of electronics?

Try slowing your feedrate down and increasing spindle RPMs. End-mills will leave a poor finish if you go too fast. Make sure your cutting depth isn't too much. Maybe the endmill or cutter is blunt? Could it be the feed direction of the cutter? Some materials need to be fed in a certain direction.

  • what's needed to add a 4th axis to a Blackfoot 4x8?

You can add a head stock and tail stock on the blackFoot by designing the table in a way the head and tail stock is positioned at the correct level so the end mill will be at the correct position. The correct position will depend on the end mills that you will be using. The end mill should be centered to the center of the head stock jaw near the lowest z-axis position.

  • one of my motors from the blackfoot kit goes back and forth rather than turning, the wiring hasnt changed since i bought it, what could be wrong?

The motor shaft does not turn, but slides back and forth in an axial motion? Please submit additional information on this page.

    Additional Information:
it goes one step then the next step in the other direction so it seems to just vibrate

    Additional Information:
It sounds like this could be a bad driver? You can determine if this is the cause by connecting another motor to this driver to see if it still happens to the new motor plugged into that driver. This will either rule out the motor causing this, or if it is the driver.

You can also possibly rule out the driver as well if you change the step and direction wires from another driver to the problem driver.

Make sure you do these steps one at a time. It's best to consider a single variable at a time.

  • Why is my 4x8 blackfoot not cutting shapes correctly. I have ran the moter test in Mach 3 and still cuts terrible

Dealing with the machine not cutting the design you may have correctly, could be a variety of things.
Most common, is the machine is not properly calibrated or tighten correctly (in specific areas).
To calibrate the machine, go to the settings(alt-6) page, and click the set steps per unit(right above the reset button). You will receive a tab which asks to select the a axis, once selected it will ask how much you plan on moving. Here you will enter a value of inches/mm's. The machine will move what it thinks is the correct length and might be dead on or might be off, we recommend doing this about 2-3 times per axis, and in long distances. (ex: for the BF you may do 2-4Ft on y-axis and 5-8Ft on the x-axis)

Make sure the v-groove bearings are tight, on the y-axis plate and z-axis, as well as the v-groove bearings on the gantry legs. (test: try moving them with your finger, if tighten correctly they will not move)
Also having the chain too loose will not move the machine enough to create your design, the chain should have about a 1" - 1"-1/2" of slack in the middle of the table when the gantry is in either of the far ends of the table. (larger machines will have a bit more slack).

Trying to run the machine faster then the bit can cut, or running with a old endmill/router bit.
This is a rare occurrence but is seen, having the correct endmill, feedrate, and RPM will have a great impact on your cut. They all work together in one complete conjunction, if one is off they will all be working incorrectly.
Each endmill will have its manufactured specifications.
