Question: Will the 1/2"5 start and 3/8" 5 start work in unison even though the turns per inch is different

Let's say you have two lead screws:

- 1/2" 5 starts at 10 TPI = 2 turns per inch. (5 starts / 10 TPI = 1/2 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 5 Starts = 2 turns per inch.)

- 3/8" 2 starts at 10 TPI = 5 turns per inch. (2 starts / 10 TPI = 1/5 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 2 starts = 5 turns per inch.)


So, if two stepper motors (one connected to the 1/2" lead screw and the other connected to the 3/8" lead screw) turned 10 revolutions in 2 seconds, the 1/2" lead nut would travel 5 inches and the 3/8" lead nut would travel 2 inches at the 2 second mark.

  • What are the toggle switch settings on the stepper motor drivers for the .5 in. lead screw 10 tpi 2 turns per inch? Thankyou!

    On the top of the stepper motor drivers is a grid with the appropriate toggle switch positions for the lead screw being used. If it is 2 turns per inch, the proper toggle switch positions would be 01101110. Try this and see if it works.

    Yes, the 651 oz/in motor requires a driver that is compatible to the motors (the motor will draw 6 amps max and the driver paired with this motor will be able to allow for a 6 amp draw). I would also recommend a 36 volt power supply for better high velocity performance.

    that demonstrates the start and stop for a spindle with the Pokeys57CNC controller and Mach3. The video is titled, Spindle Start/Stop Control.

    If you are trying to start/stop a router rather than a spindle, all you need to do is apply the same concept of using the relay by passing the black (live) wire of the power cable through the relay. The Mach3 configuration is the same.

  • Why is your 3/8" acme thread only 2 start and your 1/2" is 5 start?

    Dealing with our 3/8" ACME screw, we intended to use this with a 3D printer machine(primarily) as well as our smaller motors. Which did not need the increased torque ratings as our larger motors, which will use the 1/2" ACME screw with larger machines.

  • the relay on the 57CNC card turns on and the VFD starts up but it won"t turn off. Relay #1 stays on all the time. Even the Estop won't turn it off. Relay #2 doesn't work all

    Turns out it was an electrical noise problem from the VFD. Troubleshooting showed me everything worked perfect even with the drive powered up but when the VFD started it would NOT stop from Mach3. I had run shielded cable and grounded it in the VFD but I had an intermediate break in the shield wire at my Master Control Relay (MCR) that is activated by an Estop on my control panel.

    This confirms the importance of shielded cable and making sure that the shield is contiguous.

    My guess is the wire(s) going to the dry contacts on the relay carried enough energy to fire the base of the transistor supplying coil voltage to relay #1. Or there might have just been enough induced voltage to the relay to fire the relay coil.
    I've fought similar VFD noise issues for 25 years and it still amazes me how pesky it can be. It's impossible to maintain any separation of signal and motor leads in the tiny space in the VFD.

    The feeds and speeds for cutting MDF will depend on the end mill that you are using and at the depth you are cutting.

    The feedrates below are based on 18,00 rpm and using a spindle. Routers will not be able to handle these feedrates.

    Our Onsrud end mills will cut MDF at 3/4" depth per pass at around 300 ipm using the compression end mill. A standard Onsrud single flute will cut MDF at 3/4" depth at 120-140 ipm.

    A general purpose 2 flute end mill at 3/4" depth can cut at around 80 ipm from our experience.

    If the pins from the terminal block on the side of the board are outputs, or at least 2 of them are outputs, then you can connect our modular driver to the board (example: cw230). If they are all inputs, then you would not be able to connect an external driver.

  • I want my cnc to move quicker. I want to update my lead screws. will this make my cnc move quicker on all 3 axis. If it would which lead screw is better 2 turns per inch or 5 turns per inch.

    Changing your lead screws from a tight to a lose lead will definitely make your machine move faster as long as your stepper motors can handle the new torque that the lead screws will impose.

    Here is an example of a speed change from one lead screw to another:
    - Existing constants in the example: Stepper Motor steps 200, microstepping 1/8 making the total steps 200 * 8 = 1600.
    - Old lead screw: 1/2" allthread = 13 threads per inch (UNC)
    - New Lead Screw: 1/2" 5 starts, 10 TPI = 10 / 5 = 2 turns per inch

    Old lead screw would achieve a steps per inch of:
    1600 / (1 inch / 13 turns) = 20,800 steps per inch (You can also express the calculation as 1600 * 13 = 20,800 steps/inch)

    New lead screw would achieve a steps per inch of:
    1600 / (1 inch / 2 turns) = 3200 steps per inch

    You can see that the new lead screw requires far fewer steps to get to the same length of travel. If you maintained the same velocity for both examples, the new lead screw would travel the same distance 13/2 = 6.5 times faster. So, if your velocity was say 10 ipm, your new velocity would be 65 ipm. That would translate to far fewer burned edges and longer end mill life!

    Just remember, confirm that your motors will be able to handle the new lead screw. You will need to reduce the steps/inch causing the motor torque to increase quite a bit, so you should be fine.

    The Mach3 USB interface board requires 24V relays externally. There are no relays on the mach3 usb board. If you use an external relay on the mach3 usb board, the relay connects to the V+ which is 24V and the output pin is the return.

    Our relay board works with our parallel breakout board. An off the shelf SSR (Solid State Relay) made for 24V should work fine.

    There are a number of differences, but the main difference is the use of steel rails with bearing blocks rather than using aluminum angle and v-groove bearings to serve the same purpose. The electronics are all housed on the gantry. This machine is designed to include an optional laser gantry and 4th axis if desired. The y-axis uses a lead screw rather than roller chain.

    The formula and calculation is a starting point to get into the area of steps per inch. You will then need to use the mach3 calibration utility to get the exact steps per inch.

    Formula:
    step per inch = (motor steps * microstepping) / (travel at one turn of the motor in inches)
    if microstepping is set at 16 (1/16 on the driver) then and you are using a sprocket and chain with a pitch of .25 inches and 12 teeth on the drive sprocket
    = (200 * 16) / (12 * .25)
    = 3200 / 3
    = 1066.666 steps per inch

    For lead screw that has a travel of .5 inches at one turn like the 5 start 1/2 inch lead screw and using 4 microsteps per step (1/4):
    = (200 * 4) / (.5)
    = 800 / .5
    = 1600 steps per inch

    Remember to use the mach3 calibration wizard and double check the driver microstep setting.

  • ON THE BOB...EVERYTHING TESTS OK BOB EXCEPT X-DIRECTION OUT. IT'S VOLTAGE IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN Y AND Z (5.00 INSTEAD OF 5.03. TESTED X DIRECTION ALL THREE DRIVERS. IN EACH CASE THERE GOING INTO DRIVER BUT NOT OUT IT.

    The electronics can be tricky sometimes, especially if more than one change is made for a test. You can move the x-dir wire to another pin and set it in the software configuration. If it works, then only that pin is bad.

  • Interested in the 110v 1.5kw spindle and vfd. Need an er16, or preferably an er20 collett. Would this item work.

    Currently in our current stock the collet that work with our 1.5kW spindle 110V/220V, will be the ER-11. Only the 2.2kW spindle uses the ER-20 collet.
