Question #: 14635

Question: What size breaker is required for the 2.2kw 220v vfd ?

Current Solution

Since a 220V 2.2kW, or 2200W spindle will consume 9 to 10 amps at full torque:

2200W/220V = 10A
2200W/240V = 9.2A

then a 15 amp breaker would be suitable for this load.

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • [79] What size circuit breaker should I use for this VFD?

    The 2.2kW spindle has a power rating of 2.2kW or 2200 watts.

    If the VFD AC voltage input is rated for 220 volts, then 2200 watts / 220 volts is 10 amps, so a 15 or 20 amp breaker will work.

    If the VFD AC voltage input is rated for 110 volts, then 2200 watts / 110 volts is 20 amps, so a 25 or 30 amp breaker will work.

  • what is the current draw of the 220v VFD

    The current draw of the 220V VFD is 10 amps. Since the spindle is rated at 2.2kW, and the mains for the US 220V is in the range of 220V to 240V,

    2200W/220V = 10A
    2200W/240V = 9.167A

    So, the rage of current draw will be between 10A and 9A, but it is advisable to provide a buffer of about 5 more amps if possible.

  • What wire size to use from VFD to 2.2kW spindle?

    We use 16 AWG wires between the spindle and the VFD. This wire size has a maximum capacity for 22 Amps, a good buffer to eliminate any possibility for overheating. The 2.2kW using 220V may draw up to 10 Amps (220 x 10 = 2200).

    That is, all three wires are sharing the total current draw.

  • What are the model numbers for your 2.2kw 110v and 220v VFDs? Or can you share a link to their documentation?

    Documentation for Parameter setup is included with VFD purchase. For spindle wiring and programming, please refer to the product pages for the spindles or VFDs (or the combo kit) and scroll down to instructions. For further assistance you can contact customerservice@buildyourcnc.com

  • What brand is the 2.2 kW spindle? Same for the VFD. Thanks.

    Spindles are generally covered up to 1 year after date of purchase. We do not repair them in house, but we do work with our manufacturer to replace defective units. Generally if you have a defective unit covered under warranty, we will issue a replacement.

  • What are the physical dimensions of the 2.2kw VFD?

    On Monday, when I get back into the office, I will provide the dimensions for the 2.2kW spindle and I will also provide a drawing of these dimensions on the spindle 2.2kW page. Thanks.

    Additional Information:
    Spindle dimensional specifications:

    - Overall diameter is 80mm
    - The length of the outer housing is 200 mm
    - Diameter of the extension just below the spindle is 36mm and the length is 12mm
    - The Collet shaft diameter is 11.318 and the collet nut diameter is 16.75mm and both extend from the extension approximately 52.5 mm
    - The overall length is 264.5mm not including the air ports and the electrical connector (outer housing 200mm + extension 12mm + collet shaft and nut 52.5 mm).
    - The air ports extend 20 mm from the top of the spindle

  • What size of wire do you use to connect the VFD to the spindle?

    The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

    The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

    Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.

  • I have the 2.2 kW spindle and VFD for 110v, just wondering what amperage this draws, as my electricain buddy is telling me I need to put in a 20 amp breaker for this. I cant seem to find any amerpage draw on the INPUT label

    You can actually set a current limit in in the VFD using the programming process and the specifications in the manual that came with your VFD. You can expect the spindle at 220 Volts AC to draw (using the standard formula):

    For Volts, I will use 230 as the range is generally 220 to 240.

    Watts = Current * Volts

    Can also be written as:

    Current = Watts / Volts

    Current = 2.2kW (2200 watts) / 230 volts

    Current = 9.6 amps

  • Are there any other manuals for the VFD that comes with the 2.2kw spindle?

    We have manuals for the VFD rather than the spindles. Can you specify what issue you may be having so we can help you better?

    Additional Information:
    I am having trouble wiring the VFD. (From the wall outlet to the VFD) I think the manual or setup guide on your website is wrong. The two diagrams show two different sets of terminals on the page.

    Also, do you have a video or other documentation on programming the VFD? Your videos and documentation looks like it only covers the 1.2kw version. Are the two different spindles from different manufacturers?

  • WHAT IS D.O.F OR DEPTH OF FIELD FOR THE BLACKTOOTH LASER AND LENS?

    Depth of Field. This is how far the focal point goes before re-expanding again. With a 2" lens, you have approximately 2-3mm of DOF. This means that you'll have 2-3mm of perfectly focused laser before it starts to re-expand again. If you have a 4" lens, you will have up to 7mm of DOF.
