Question #: 15036

Question: [Mach3 USB Interface Board] Is it possible to run board on usb power

Current Solution

Yes. You don't need to power the board with 24V. The controller will work with only a USB connection to the computer. However, the Input and output terminals (IN1-4 and OUT1-4) will not work without at least 12V on the DCM and 24V terminals.

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • Is it possible to add proximity sensors with your USB Controller Board

Yes, proximity sensors work similarly to limit switches. There are three connections that connect to the signal (input terminal) and two power connections that is connected to the 24V power supply that supplies the Mach3 USB controller. I have only tested NPN proximity switches with that controller in NO (normally open mode).

  • I am wiring my breakout board and it has a USB port on it. Is the USB port there to supply the 5 volt power to it?

For our parallel breakout board (https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-parallel-breakout-relay#prettyPhoto/2/) the schematic will show the connections going from the BB to the drivers. The parallel breakout board uses the 25 pin parallel connection to communicate from the computer to drivers, and the USB is used to power the main-board itself, supplying 5V.

  • [575] It is possible to use Modbus MPG with your card or it is only hardware mpg allowed?

You can use a USB, RS232, RS485 (modbus), wireless, or hardwired MPG or Pendant with this controller. I personally use a wireless pendant with this controller without a problem.

  • Hi, is it possible to operate red USB controller with Mach4? What plugins do I need? Thank you.

No, the red mach3 USB controller will only work with mach3, you will need the pokeys57cnc. This controller will work with mach3 or mach4.

  • IS IT POSSIBLE TO MOUNT THE NEW EXTRUDER WHITEANT?

Mounting the extruder to the whiteAnt can be done a couple of ways. One is to take the 4 mounting holes located at the lower portion of the z-axis rail support and use long screws protruding out. Take a thinner material and drill the four holes matching the locations of the 4 screws and screw on nuts to hold it in place. The other option would be to use the metal bracket and fasten to the edge of the rail support.

  • Breakout Board with Relay. What is the USB connection on this board for? Does this board Still require a 5v power supply?

We generally use the USB to power the interface (breakout board). The current from the computer is sufficient to supply the breakout board.

  • The breakout board receives 5v power from the USB port and from my computer's USB or does it need to come from a 5v adapter?

The breakout board receives 5v power from the USB. There is no need for an external 5v power adapter.

Here is the wiring diagram for the MAch3 USB breakout board:
    https://www.buildyourcnc.com/Documents/Electric%20Wiring%20Diagram.pdf

You will need 24 volt relays for the output on that board since that side of the board requires 24 volt power at the V+ and V-

My inquiry is for the Planet CNC USB and 5v relays.
I am 99% finished with my 2 axis lathe build and this is the last item for me to conquer.
I want to control power to router, and vacuum with the BOB going through the 5V relays purchased on this site.
    Thanks again.

Using the Mist, spindle or flood pins...

    Buildyourcnc response:
There is an IN, GND and 5V for the digital side to engage the relay. There is an S, O and P for the power line of the device to be controlled.

The 5V and GND must be connected to the 5V and GND from the USB board. The IN is the wire from the output terminal (i.e. mist, flood, spindle).

For the power side, here are the scenarios:
    - P to O connection is normally open
    - P to S connection is normally closed

So, if you have the power wire that would plug into the wall, the L "black" wire from the power cord will pass through this part of the circuit (cutting the wire and one end in the P terminal and the other end in the O or S terminal). Generally, the P to O is used as this connection is normally open and when the relay is engaged, the circuit will close allowing the current to flow through that wire.

  • Is it possible to manage USB Controller (Breakout) from my own (custom) Windows application? Is there a driver API or smth for that?

We could not guarantee, nor say, whether or not your current software would be able to utilize the USB breakout board. Our USB breakout board is designed for use with Planet CNC software found here, http://www.planet-cnc.com/index.php?page=software

As far as we know, this is the only CNC Controller software that operates on a USB breakout controller.

  • [65] So do you need a 24 volt power supply on the USB breakout board or can you use the 5 volt side ?

To use the inputs and outputs on the MAch3 USB controller, you will need at least a 12 VDC power supply inte 24V terminal (V+) and the DCM terminal (V-). The common lead of the limit switch will be connected to DCM (V-) and the NO (Normally Open ) lead of the limit switch will be connected to the Input of your choice (IN1 - IN4).

  • [575] Hello. Does this USB interface board thc? I have the proma 150.

I do not recommend using the Mach3 USB controller to be used with a torch height controller. There are only 4 inputs on the Mach3 USB controller. We have tried to interface a Proma THC to this board without success; however, we did not exhaust all possibilities.

I would recommend the Pokeys57CNC controller to connect the Proma THC as I have interfaced these two before and they work well together.

  • How can I to connect a signal to turn on a mist in a USB board? Thank you

You will need a 24V relay to control mist using the Mach3 USB breakout board. The wiring diagram (link below) will show one of the output terminals (O1, O2, O3 or O4) connected to one of the leads of the relay. The other lead is connected to the V+ to complete the circuit. The other part of the relay is used as a switch to control the mist on/off.

  • Can I have a slave axis on Mach3 USB Board?

Yes, you can. You can slave the axis with two motors by using the "A" (AD and AP) terminals for the slaved motor on the axis with two motors. In Mach3, click the config menu and select "slave axis". Select the axis that contains the slave axis and select the A Axis radio button under that axis.
