Question: WHAT CABLE LENGTHS SHOULD USE FOR THE BLACKFOOT CNC MACHINE

Current Solution

The blackfoot requires a total of 50 feet of cable.

The X axis needs 15 feet
The Y axis needs 17 feet
and the Z-axis needs 18 feet

These are 20 gauge 4 conductor cable.

  • SHOULD I SELECT THE GREENBULL OR BLACKFOOT CNC MACHINE?

The greenBull can range is routing width sizes of 5 feet and 6 feet. The blackFoot has a 4 foot routing width.

    Previous Solution:
The greenBull machine has a sturdier gantry than the blackFoot, so you can be more agressive with the cutting feedrate (cutting speed). The blackFoot is also a good machine, but it all comes down to the speed at which you want to produce the fabrication

The spindle is also highly recommended for it's quietness and easier cleanup (no fan blowing the dust in the air)

  • My blackfoot 4x8 Starts sending erratic commands to the machine randomly in the middle of a program or freezes altogether. Replaced USB Cable, updated software, updated firmware, tried other computers. What else should I do?

If the computer has been tested to be functional, it is most likely the breakout board which is faulty. Replace the breakout board and it should solve these issues.

  • What is travel speed of the blackfoot machine ?? I read in a forum somewhere that it's around 100inches/minute. Is that accurate ??

The jog speed of the blackToe is 1000 - 1500 ipm (inches per minute). I generally set this to about 700 ipm just to be safe and 700 ipm is plenty fast for most scenarios. The cutting speed will depend on the tool (end mill) that you will use for the application, the material being used and whether a spindle or router is used. In a scenario that a spindle is used and cutting relatively hard plywood at 3/4" full depth using an Onsrud 1/4" diameter compression end mill, you can cut at around 100 - 300 ipm. Using a router would be only half the speed and cutting depth due to the poor torque.

  • what are all the settings i'd need for mach3 for use with a blackfoot and a redfly?

These are the recommend values(default) for our blackFoot CNC machine, the acceleration and velocity can be adjusted as high as the motor can rotate without stalling! Suggested increment's will be by 10's.

    blackFoot:
    X-axis
    “CW8060 (6.0A) Driver”
    Set to 1/16 Microstep, 5.43A
    Dipswitches: 01100110 (“0”=down, “1”=up)
    Mach3 Motor Tuning: 914.29 steps/in, Velocity 400.02, Acceleration 4
    Y-axis
    “CW230 (3.0A) Driver”
    Set to 1/16 Microstep, 2.7A
    Dipswitches: 11001100
    Mach3 Motor Tuning: 1422.22 steps/in, Velocity 400.02, Acceleration 4
    Z-axis
    “CW230 (3.0A) Driver”
    Set to 1/4 Microstep, 2.7A
    Dipswitches: 10101100

  • What precision do the CNC machine have, for instance the 12’’ x 36’’ x 3’’?

Our machine that matches those dimensions, the blueChick, uses roller chain for both X and Y axes, and a 1/2" 5 start 10 TPI lead screw for the Z axis. The precision is generally related to repeatability and we have not does extensive measurement of these tolerances. The resolution is set at better than 1000 steps per inch.

  • What wire gauge should be used for the 36V 8.8 amp power supply

Most of our power supplies allow for a 9 amp current draw.

For the Neutral, Live and earth ground, wire gauge for that level of current is 14 for relatively short cable lengths. Increase the gauge for longer lengths past 25 feet.

For the DC 24V output terminals to the drivers, 20 gauge is fine. If the power supply is connecting to only one driver, increase the wire gauge to 14.

  • Should the machine material (wood like) be painted before assembly?

Our machines structures is made from MDO, which is used in the construction industry. Specifically in cement forming, which allows the material to be treated and coated for the specific requirements in the field.
We do recommend painting the structure (everything structure wise besides aluminum) with oil based paints, if you have the machine in a very humid location or location with constant rain. If you do not have the machine in a climate control environment.
Painting the machine will not give it a longer run time or any specific advantages to the over structure or material. Painting it would be more of a personal choice, in making it specifically orientated to your shop or personality.
