The driver only receives control inputs and outputs current to turn the motor; therefore it does not really know or care what it is moving. The difference in rotary motion and linear depends on the software (machine control) for the input, and for what the motor is hooked to for the output. For example, to convert the motors original rotary motion to linear motion one might use a lead screw, a rack and pinion, etc. For rotary motion, one might connect directly to the motor shaft, use a gear box, etc. The software must account for this and issue the proper control signals, since all the motor ever does is turn a specified amount.
