Create PCBs Using the Toner Transfer Method, Step 3: Transferring the layout to the PCB

Submerge board with toner into ferric chloride and water at about 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) to remove the copper where the traces and pads do not exist. The Ferric chloride will not remove the copper under the toner. Ferric chloride is a good solution to use because it is more gentle (less aggressive) than other chemicals (acids). A good technique to keep the ferric chloride warm is to place the bowl of ferric chloride into a hot bowl of water and let it float. Clean the board (remove toner) with acetone and cotton pads. If through hole components are used on the board, use a very small drill bit to drill the holes at the center of the through hole pads.
