    We are currently working on a relay board that will connect to USB breakout board, and the router/spindle for both the on/off function. Unfortunately we still do not have it completed or ready to be placed on our website, but it is in the final stages of testing. Please check back regularly for updated stock!

    There is no vacuum control on the Planet-CNC program, however you could use the same concept of the router/spindle on/off using the relay circuit. Although you will have to use either the flood or mist function for the vacuum.

The parallel breakout board is included in those kits only to condition those signals for use with the drivers.

    The USB serves at the actual controller, sending the pulse trains, but the computer sends simple human readable instructions to the USB controller to tell the controller how to send pulses.

    The non-technical differences that may serve as the most important information to you is that the parallel configurations allow for a wider variety of industry standard software that can be used to control the cnc machine.   • I believe I understand USB v Parallel BoB on the Blacktooth but what is "integrated computer" mean?

    Integrated computer for our blackFoot means, that the computer components will be included with that kit. Meaning that a motherboard(mini itx) with a on-board processor, RAM, HDD and power supply is sent.
    So the blackTooth will be a all in one kit, excluding any software with the price.

    The parallel breakout board has the db25 connector for data and the USB connector for power. Connect the USB from the computer to the parallel breakout board so the breakout board will have 5V of power coming from the computer. The db25 connector (connector with the 25 pins) receive data signals for each pin from 1 to 17 and have respective numbered screw terminals, some for input and some for output (18 to 25 are gnd pins).

    The parallel is the most versatile breakout board we have and will work with most of the software out there, but many computers are not equipped with parallel connectors anymore. Parallel adapter cards are available if you don't have a parallel connection on your computer.

    The USB interface must be used only with the planet-cnc software, which is great software, but you are still limited to only that software application. This is actually the least expensive option unless you use linux and go with the above option.

    The mapping of the input pins of the parallel breakout board is configured through software. The input pin are very versatile and can be mapped to all kinds of different types of input including axis limits and axis homing.

    The USB port on the Parallel Interface board is necessary to supply 5V power. Connect with a USB cable to a USB source.

  • I am putting together the Blackfoot and I am using a porter cable router. I am confused on how to relay the routetr with the USB board. is there another relay switch that goes between the USB board and the router so that planet CNC can turn the router and perhaps the vacuum on and off?

    We are currently working on a relay board that will connect to USB breakout board, and the router/spindle for both the on/off function.     Any parallel PCI-E card should work with mach 3 and windows 7, but you will need to know the port that the card will be using (example: 0x378).

    In mach 3 go to Config/Ports&Pins/PortsSetup&AxisSelection

    Additional Information:
    Once the PCI adapter is installed. Check the device manager on that lpt port and look at the I/O range. You will need to use the first I/O address in the range for the port address entry in Mach3.

    Yes, there is a small signal level voltage coming from the parallel port out of the computer. If the pin is high, then it will be outputting 5v and if the pin is low, it will be pulled to ground. It may appear that your parallel breakout board is powered, but will not provide sufficient voltage to properly operate the drivers. The USB power is vital for proper operation.

    The parallel breakout board contains a USB port to power the board. Through the USB port, the computer delivers 5v of stable power to the parallel breakout board, but doe not provide any communication as would normally be associated with USB connectivity.

    The reason we elected to use the USB port to provide power is to remove the need for an external 5v wall adapter.

    A parallel to USB adapter will not work. You will need to use a USB interface like the ones below:

    To answer the question in more detail, the parallel port is actually an extension straight from the CPU and is also called the GPIO (General Purpose I/O) pins. These pins carry signals independently, hence the description as being a parallel port.

    The stepper motor driver receives a pulse train (series of pulses). A single pin on the parallel port sends a pulse train to one stepper motor driver and stepper motor for a single axis. Another pin on the parallel port sends a pulse train to another stepper motor driver on another axis. This happens simultaneously as with the direction signals for each axis.

    If a parallel port is adapted through a USB (using an adapter), the parallel port cannot have these signals happen in a simultaneous fashion and will cause the stepper motors of a CNC router or machine to be very clunky, if it works at all. To elaborate, the computer sends an instruction to the USB to send a high signal to pin 1, so it does, then another signal to pin 2, so it does. This is happening one after another. The speed at which this happens is reduced dramatically, and the position of one axis may now be out of sync to another axis.

    The reason the USB interfaces (linked above) work is that the USB delivers broad instructions to the interface (to a microcontroller) and the interface parses the instructions and outputs simultaneous signals to the stepper motor drivers.

    The USB on the Parallel breakout board, is used for powering the board itself (5v USB), and the Parallel to communicate directly between the drivers and the computer/mach 3.
    Planet-CNC cannot be used with our Parallel Breakout Board, it is only intend to be used with Mach 3/other open source programs.

  • Why does the program freeze up in random places? Is there a way to continue where you left off or must I always start over?

    I am using your Planet CNC software with a MK1USB controller importing a Vectric DXF file. Once I hit "Start" the machine operates fine until it randomly stops, the control functions gray out and I lose all control. Unplugging the USB and replugging it boots everything back up, but does not allow me to continue where it left off and makes me start the piece over.
