Question: What is the rpm range of the 2.2kw spindle and inverter?

The VFD is capable of a maximum of 400 Hz frequency. That converts to 24,000 RPM for the spindle. The minimum frequency is 100 Hz which is 6000 RPM.

    According to the supplier of the 2.2 kW spindle, the safest operating speed for the spindle is 6000 RPM. The supplier also stated that theoretically, the spindle can operate from 0 to 24,000 RPM. I am continuing a dialog with the supplier to delve deeper into understanding the configurations and ramifications of such configurations for operations outside of the safe boundaries into the "theoretical" ranges.

  • How to display RPM instead of frequency on the VFD? I have the 2.2kv 110 volt spindle and inverter.

    There is a button on the front of the VFD that will cycle through RPM, Freq, and a few other readings. If there is a >> button on your VFD, that will work. If there is a mode button on your VFD, that should works as well.

    There is a >> disc button but it does not cycle through the display modes.

    The noise level of the 1.5 kW and the 2.2 kW are very similar. The noise level is considerably quieter than typical routers. I am going to add sound db levels to this FAQ a bit later.

    Additional Information:
    The db (decibels) reading for the spindle is 70 and an 890 Porter Cable router (a lower powered tool than the spindle) measured 90 db. Both measurements were taken in the same environment and measured at the same distance from the tool.

    Spindles are generally covered up to 1 year after date of purchase. We do not repair them in house, but we do work with our manufacturer to replace defective units. Generally if you have a defective unit covered under warranty, we will issue a replacement.

    t might be a better idea to increase the circuit breaker above 20 as 2200/110 is exactly 20. You will not have a buffer there in case you need it. Alternatively, you can decrease the current draw of the spindle in the VFD programming process.

    It is an M8 metric size on the port going into the spindle, and a 1/4" compression on the other side.

    Is the M8 port a M8x1.25 or M8x1?

    If you are referring to the book build, use a chamfer bit that is large enough to create a chamfer for most of the edge of the 3/4" thickness of the board, but still has a sliver of space for the bearing on which to ride.

    Additional Information:
    Mine is M8x1mm. I replaced the stock fitting with a brass hose barb and used "steel wire reinforced vacuum hose" with a 1/4" ID because it resists kinking and collapsing.

    The spindle water inlet and outlet fittings are 1/4 Inside Diameter and 3/8 Outside Diameter.

    Please refer to the Spindle wiring diagram found on the product page for the 2.2KW spindle. The wiring diagram will be the same for the 1.5kW Spindle. The only difference will depend on if you are using 110v or 220v power, as setting PD008 asks you to specify the max voltage.

    If error shows at ramp up or at constant speed:
    1. Check for a short circuit or partial short circuit and the insulation of the output wire is sufficient.
    2. Increase the capacity or the inverter if it is too small. Replace with an inverter that has a larger capacity
    3. Extend the ramp-up time
    4. Decrease the torque and increase the set value.
    5. Check if the motor is blocked and if there is a sudden change in load.
    6. Check if there is a sudden chance in the power supply voltage.
    7. Extend ramp down time

    21. Check for jamming or any sudden change with respect to mechanical load.
    22. Set the V/F curve correctly.

  • What is the benefit to using a spindle over a standard router?

    This solution will refer to the water cooled spindles that we sell. Generally, routers are air cooled which push air downwards through the router to cool the router motor. This has an undesirable effect for CNC machines that will blow the dust and chips into the air. The water cooled spindle will not blow since it uses water to cool the spindle motor. This allows the chips and dust to be confined within the dust shoe and get removed by the vacuum. Additionally, standard routers have a sound level that far exceeds that of the spindle.

  • WHAT ELECTRICAL CABLE DO I USE TO CONNECT VFD INVERTER SPINDLE?

    The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

    The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

    Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.
