Question #: 1119

Question: When wiring NC limit switches in series to the V5 BOB where are the connections made on the BOB?

Current Solution

The breakout board has input pins on one side. Use these pins to connect limit switches. The return of the circuit goes to gnd which is located on the same side, where the input pins are located.

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • Where are the limit switch connections made when the switches are in series, and NC??

One end of the limit switch circuit will be connected to the pin and NC, and the other end will be connected to COM and GND.

For example: (the "-" is wire.)

[Breakout board input pin] ---- ([NC on switch] [com on switch]) ---- [NC on switch] [com on switch] ---- [back to GND on the breakout board]

An explanation of the limit switch connections is located on the brakout board datasheet: https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-parallel-breakout-relay (instruction step # 1.

  • wiring limit switches in series NC to the V5 Break Out Board

When wiring limit switches to the breakout board, generally NC (Normally Closed) are connected in series (acts like a wire that when broken, breaks the circuit). NO (Normally Open) is generally wired in parallel where if one is pressed, the wire creates a circuit connecting the pin to gnd.

  • Hello, I am trying to configure Home and Limit switches using the Pokeyes57cnc and NC switches. I am confused on the procedure of setting this up. wiring to the board and setting up in Mach4. Can you direct me to a tutorial or offer some suggestions? Thanks Dale

NC mechanical switch configuration is supported. You can download the manual from this page (Mach4 plugin and manuals):
    https://buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-electronic-component-breakout-Mach4-mach3-USB-ethernet-Board

The pokeys57CNC controller has input terminals and pins for limit switches on each of the 8 axes. There are three separate inputs per axis, two for the actual limits of that axis, and one for the home position.

Connect each switch between the GND terminal and its respective axis limit terminal/pin. For instance, the limit switch will typically have three leads, COM, NC, and NO. In an NC configuration, the NC connects to the terminal/pin, say, Axis 1 lim +, and the COM connects to the GND terminal.

In Mach4, in the new device wizard, make sure to specify the correct option on the home and limit switches that matches the machine configuration.

  • LIMIT SWITCHES FOR AXIS. THE PRINT SHOWS THAT YOU CAN WIRE LIMITS EITHER N.O. OR N.C. SO IF THIS IS CORRECT I WOULD NEED TO TELL BOARD IN SOFTWARE HOW LOOK AT THESE LIMITS, I'M GOING GET AN INPUT LOOSE DEPEND ON IT.

    BYCNC Response:
This is correct. You will need to use a method appropriate for the software you are using. Also remember that NC switches are typically wired in series, while NO switches are normally wired in parallel.

    User Response:
I am using the cnc planet software for your USB board. Are the limit configurations in this software?

    BYCNC Response:
Yes, Planet CNC software is compatible with the use of limit switches. Configuration information will depend on your specific application. You can view Planet CNC's information here: http://www.planet-cnc.com/files/CNCUSBController.pdf

  • BlackFoot CNC: Where should z-axis limit switches be placed?

The limit switch for the z-axis should be placed in a location where nothing can interfere with CNC process, now for our blackFoot, referring to step 115(https://www.buildyourcnc.com/blackFoot48v40.aspx#prettyPhoto/120/) it will be placed 1-1/4"(may be adjusted) down from the top wood piece(vacuum holder). So contact will be made from the location of the anti-backlash nut wood piece and the limit switch stopping it from going to high.

  • Using USB Controller Board with Planet-CNC software. The S/W recognizes limit switches but not soft limits. Help?

"Soft limits are used to decelerate machine to stop before machine is stopped hard way at limit switch or before it crashes. I recommend "Soft Limits Decelerate" and "Soft Limits Strict" settings are also checked. Sometimes we need to disable soft limits and there is a command for this in menu "Machine/Soft Limits". When soft limit is triggered position display will be yellow."

  • WHERE ARE THE ELECTRONICS WIRING VIDEOS?

The blackFoot CNC machine kit does not include a table. The table can be made as long or shot as you need. for instance, if you are looking for a travel of 4 fet x 4 feet, then the table will need to be about 6 feet long to get the full 4 feet of travel.

The electronics are very straight forward using the connection diagram for the breakout board that you select. Use the videos for a general idea and then use the connection diagram to verify the correct connections for the interface of your choosing.

Yes,the USB interface replaces the breakout board, but remember that you will need to use the planet-cnc software with the USB interface.

    Additional Information:
The electronics does accompany the cnc machine kits as long as you select the option "with electronics". There are option to purchase the machines without electronics and that would be necessary if you either have your own electronics, or you prefer the plug and play cnc computer system we call the redLeaf, or redSprout. This will also be necessary if you prefer the electronics that use the USB interface rather than the parallel interface.

  • MY LIMIT SWITCHES ARE TRIGGERING AT RANDOM.

Are you using shielded wire? If so, take the shield to ground. If there are any other wires in the cable that is not being used, ground those as well. The customer can also try moving the cables as far away as possible from the motor wires and motors.

  • THE SWITCHES KEEP TRIPPING! AT TIMES IT IS LITERALLY AS SOON CLICK RESET ON MACH 3 THEY TRIP AGAIN.

    http://buildyourcnc.com/PrimeronHomingandLimitSwitches.aspx
There is a pin setting in Mach3 that says how to react to the inputs from the switches. Your setting is probably wrong as the trigger happens immediately.

You may want to think about shielded wire and/or a resistor on each limit switch line. If there are stray wires, connect them to ground. Additionally, the shield from the shielded cable insulation should alse connected to ground at both ends.
Try upping the Debounce interval in Mach3. You have to adjust the debounce interval. You go to config, general config, and it is in the top right corner. I set mine to 100 and it seems to work well.

  • [575] I have finally got my limit switches wired and working - thank you. Can they also used as homing switches and if so it it just a question of looping the two inputs on the board i.e. the limit and home terminals IN2 to IN3

You will want to connect the homing switches (which may also serve as your near limit switches) to different input terminals. It's ok to add more limit switches with the home switches, but each home should be on independent inputs. For example, connect home X and any other limit switch to IN1, connect home Y and any other limit switch to IN2, and so on. This will allow you to properly use the "ref all home" button in Mach3.

    Additional Information:

    Additional Information:
In the instructions (diagram 1) you show all the home switches connected in parallel? But here you say they need to each have their own inputs. "You will want to connect the homing switches (which may also serve as your near limit switches) to different input terminals." I dont see how the second and third axis can go home if the first axis has already closed the parallel circuit unless they back off a bit until the switch opens up again before the next axis goes to home? My machine has no limit switches so I assume they are home switches.

  • WIRING THE BLACKTOOTH LED PANEL TO PARALLEL BOB

The blackTooth build instructions explain how to hook the four LED control panel to the USB breakout but not the Parallel BOB. Turns out it's very easy. Simply wire the corresponding LED cathodes (top pins on the display) to the matching CP- for the X, Y, and Z axises and wire the anodes (bottom pins) to the 5V terminals. For the on/off LED, wire the cathode to the G terminal on the laser power supply and the anode to the 5V laser supply terminal. Also, remove the 5V wire running from the Parallel BOB to the 5V terminal on the laser power supply. It is not needed and will cause the laser on/off light to always be on if the USB cable is connected.
