The Mach3 USB controller requires a minimum of 12V and a maximum of 24V to the DCM and 24V terminals. The DCM is the GND or DC negative terminal, and the 24V terminal is the positive terminal.

I bought the Mach3 board and am trying to connect it with an AMB 1400 DI router, which has a normal power supply (1400W) as well as a digital interface which has three wires: a brown wire (10-26V, power supply), a white wire (ground) and a green wire (0-10V signal). I am looking at your 3 axis CNC machine kit(part #101) on Amazon. Is the interface on this kit USB?

Here is a list of the parts needed to get the electronics combo functioning (parallel or USB interface options):

- 22 or 24 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect all of the drivers to the USB or parallel interface (terminal to terminal connections),
- 18 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect the drivers to the power supply,
- a power cable (extension cord) to connect from the power outlet to the power supply,
- 4 conductor cable to connect the drivers to the stepper motors,
- a USB cable to connect from the computer to the USB interface (or for power to the parallel interface),
- for the parallel interface, a parallel cable is needed (male to male db-25),
- a computer (for parallel interface, the computer will need a parallel port and if the computer does not contain a parallel interface, the motherboard may have a header for it, or you can purchase a parallel adapter to plug into the motherboard, very inexpensive),
- cnc control software: for the USB interface, you will need planet-cnc software, for the parallel interface, you can use any industry standard cnc control software (the typical is Mach3 for Windows, or EMC2 or Linuxcnc for Linux (Linuxcnc.org).

5v power supply is not needed. The 5 volts signal level power is derived from the computer through USB on both types of interfaces.

But the mach3 usb does not absolutely need the 24V supply. The 24v supply is only needed if you will be using limit switches (I1-4), VFD controlled automatically and for use with the outputs (O1-4)

We generally use the USB to power the interface (breakout board). The current from the computer is sufficient to supply the breakout board.

You will need a 24v power supply if you wish to use the inputs or output on that side of the board. A 12V power supply will work if you only need to use the inputs.

The inputs on that side of the board are typically used for limit switches, emergency stop, or homing switches. The outputs on that side of the controller are typically used to turn on and off machine devices such as spindle, coolant valve, etc. There is also a 0-10V PWM output on that side of the board.

Another solution would be to purchase an expensive 36VDC-->24VDC convert..just connected to one of the DC outputs on your 36VDC PS and you don't have to purchase another large 24DC PS.. The power requirement is pretty low so it won't/shouldn't affect the 36VDC used to drive motors/etc.

Hello purchased a 3 axis elect. combo (heavy gantry). Printed a wiring dia. for the mach3 USB board from the page with the picture of the Mach3 USB board. Question; wiring schm. showes USB board wierd to a 24v/12v power supply. Power that came with combo kit is 36v. This work ok? Thanks for info

Your deduction of the power supply at fault is probably correct. When you attempt to power the power supply, check the V+ and V- (COM) with a multimeter on the DC setting. You should measure 36 volts.

If there is no voltage on the V+ and V- (COM) there should be a fuse inside the power supply that you might want to check. Also, while you in there, check the electrolytic capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors have a finite lifespan much shorter than other components and are often the cause of many problems with all electronics.

My machine stopped today (after many fun filled hours of operation in the last 3+ years). I suspect the 36V 8.8 amp power supply as there is no power to the stepper motors. Is there a breaker to check, or do I need to get another power supply? Should I assume the stepper motors are OK?

For our parallel breakout board (https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-parallel-breakout-relay#prettyPhoto/2/) the schematic will show the connections going from the BB to the drivers. The parallel breakout board uses the 25 pin parallel connection to communicate from the computer to drivers, and the USB is used to power the main-board itself, supplying 5V.

In our experience, the backlash compensation is not an ideal mechanism to solve backlash issues. It is best to resolve the backlash issue mechanically regather than through software.

Boards that handle all instructions on its own chip (which is the case for this all other USB boards) take some control away from Mach3. Without Mach3 having granular control. With that said, we do not have experience with the backlash compensation with that particular board. Our experience with backlash compensation with other boards have resulted in very poor accuracy and undesirable geometrical moves.
