Question #: 15494

Question: [Delcam ArtCAM CADCAM Software] Makeing cnc 2d 3d cuting

Current Solution

Yes, the greenLean can do the same type of machining as any other 3 axis CNC machine or CNC router. With 3D machining using a 3 axis CNC machine, 3D carvings can be done; however, no undercuts can be carved as the end mill (carving tool) is constantly perpendicular to the workpiece.

A 4th axis headstock and tailstock can be added to the machine for more precise 3D carvings and the greenLean can have these 4th axis units mounted within the structural ribs.

  • USB CNC Keyboard Speed Pot Size?

The potentiometer for the speed header on the usb interface is used as a voltage divider, so the ohm value is just going to portion the voltage rather than output a resistance. You can use many values, but I would use a value of around 5k ohms.

  • CAN I USE A MAC TO CONTROL THE CNC?

There are several CAD/CAM programs out there for MacOS. Here is a list of a few: http://www.macuser.de/forum/f53/3d-2d-cad-395058/#post4499316
I've also read good things about punchCAD: http://www.punchcad.com/
Of course, there is always SketchUp if you are in a pinch. There are a few CAM plugins for SketchUp as well, but I've never used them, so I can't vouch for them.

CAD/CAM will get you as far as designing your parts and producing the g-code, but if you also want to run the CNC machine with your Mac, you will need a piece of software similar to Mach3 or EMC to run the g-code. I haven't been able to find anything like these programs that runs on Mac, so you may have to run Mach3 or EMC in Windows using Boot Camp or a virtual machine such as VMware or Parallels.

Personally, I would use the Mac to do all the CAD/CAM, then use a cheap PC to run the CNC machine.

  • IS DRILL BIT USED IN THE CNC MACHINE?

The cutting tool is an end mill (it looks like a drill bit). It is a cutting tool that can plunge and cut sideways. That item is not included and is a consumable. You will purchase these very frequently and will have geometry that is very specific to how you apply the cnc machine.

  • HOW DO CNC MACHINES WORK?

A CNC machine takes codes from a computer and converts the code using software into electrical signals. The signals from the computer are then used to control motors. Since the motors can turn very small amounts the machine is able to move in highly precise movements over and over again.

  • WHAT CAN CNC MACHINES DO?

There is virtually no limit to what a CNC can do. CNC machines are responsible for almost all modern day machining operations in manufacturing industries. They normally costs tens of thousands of dollars, or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our machines can be used to engrave plaques, cut wood for kits, mill aluminum parts, and inject plastic components. All it requires is willing to learn and understand how to use the machines to accomplish what you want to do.

  • HOW DO I SQUARE MY CNC MACHINE OR GANTRY?

I use a standard large "L" square used in construction. I run gantry up and down with the bit along one side of the square to make the square aligned with the x-axis. I then run the bit along the other edge and if I see space from the edge of the bit to the square, I adjust the gantry square by loosening and tightening the eye bolts that hold the chain at the ends of the table. Repeat as necessary to get the desired square.

  • how can I convert the whiteAnt from the 3D printer mode to the CNC milling mode?

To convert the whiteAnt to a CNC machine, you will want to lower the upper structure to the lowest position to create the most rigidity overall. You will see that there are many holes below the sides of the upper structure that are evenly spaced. This is so you can adjust this lower. You will also want to fasten the lower sides to a substrate (piece of wood, or something) with l-brackets or something that has a bit of adjustment capability. This will keep the sides more rigid as well. Use a Dremel for the spindle. If you want to use a another spindle, let me know and we can product a mount for that spindle since the Dremel has poor runout (TIR). This is important if you are wanting really precise milling.

  • HOW DO ADDRESS THE DANGER OF THESE CNC MACHINES

These machines are inherently dangerous. Before the machine moves, the machine should be clear of any person by a dimension of at the distance of a persons reach plus a few more feet. This is the policies we institute in our shop and what is recommend to all of our customers. Treat these machines as you would treat any major power tool in the shop.

With that said, you can certainly add some protective parts, but still keep folks away even with those installed. I would use the gantry side to do all of the mounting of the protective parts. Consider using sheet metal that you can bend and make a simple installation right on the gantry side.
