Question #: 395

Question: WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO BUY?

Current Solution

PC with parallel port and USB port
20awg stranded wires for the motors - http://www.buildyourcnc.com/electronicscombo.aspx
18awg stranded wires for power supply to drivers
24awg stranded wires for breakout board to drivers
(location and spacing of components varies from one person to another, so we do not provide cables/wires)
- General purpose extension cord (cut the female end off) to provide power to power supply
- USB cable to power breakout board
- Parallel cable to communicate to breakout board
- Router
- (optional - instead of router) Spindle with power inverter http://www.buildyourcnc.com/SpindlesAndAccessories.aspx
- (if purchasing spindle with inverter) General purpose extension cord (240v) (cut the female end off) to provide power to power inverter
- End Mill(s) http://www.buildyourcnc.com/ProductsEndMills.aspx
- CAD, and/or CAD-CAM software (to produce geometry, machine operations, and g-code) http://www.buildyourcnc.com/CNCsoftware.aspx
- CNC control software (to read g-code and control machine) http://www.buildyourcnc.com/CNCsoftware.aspx
- If the machine does not have the table included, then a table will need to be built. The rails, chain and chain mounts are included that are used on this table.

  • I just bought a 3040 800 watt cnc. What electronics do i need to buy to run it?

If you do not have electronics for your CNC, you will need stepper motors (or servos) that will fit your torque requirements, drivers for the motors, a power supply, applicable wires, and an interface board for computer communication. We sell electronic combo kits here https://buildyourcnc.com/electronicscombo.aspx

  • What else from you shop do I need to connect a #40 Drive Sprocket to my nema23 motor, its not so clear

You will need a collar or adapter to connect the ID of the #40 sprocket (0.622") and a 1/4" collar with our OD (0.674"). We currently do not have anything in this nature.

    Additional Information:

    Additional Information:
For a 1/4" input shaft the larger #40 sprocket, seem's pretty large for the 1/4" input shaft. So we recommend using a #25 sprocket and #25 roller chain with our NEMA-23 since it will be more compatible arrangement.

  • what do I need to hook up the electronics?

Here is a list of the parts needed to get the electronics combo functioning (parallel or USB interface options):

    - 22 or 24 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect all of the drivers to the USB or parallel interface (terminal to terminal connections),
    - 18 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect the drivers to the power supply,
    - a power cable (extension cord) to connect from the power outlet to the power supply,
    - 4 conductor cable to connect the drivers to the stepper motors,
    - a USB cable to connect from the computer to the USB interface (or for power to the parallel interface),
    - for the parallel interface, a parallel cable is needed (male to male db-25),
    - a computer (for parallel interface, the computer will need a parallel port and if the computer does not contain a parallel interface, the motherboard may have a header for it, or you can purchase a parallel adapter to plug into the motherboard, very inexpensive),
    - cnc control software: for the USB interface, you will need planet-cnc software, for the parallel interface, you can use any industry standard cnc control software (the typical is Mach3 for Windows, or EMC2 or Linuxcnc for Linux (Linuxcnc.org).

5v power supply is not needed. The 5 volts signal level power is derived from the computer through USB on both types of interfaces.

  • [807] What size power supply do I need to this?

I would recommend either a 36VDC or a 48VDC power supply with 10 amps. Here are links to these power supplied on this website:

  • WHAT DOES THE GREENBULL KIT INCLUDE AND DO I NEED TO INCLUDE?

The greenBull 4X comes with all of the components and electronics to assemble the gantry of the machine. You will need to build the table. We provide the rails and roller chain for the X-axis (along the length of the table for full 8 feet of travel). You will need to provide some wire to connect the electronics and a computer to run the machine. You will also need to purchase the software that you will need to run the machine that matches how you will apply the machine. We suggest the mach3 control program. The CAM program is up to you as there are many options out there.

  • What kind of software do I need?

For software, you will need some sort of CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to draw your designs (such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Corel Draw, etc.).

You will then need CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software to apply machine operations to your designs, and to export "G-code". We suggest CamBam. CamBam also has CAD capabilities, but they are quite limited and inefficient, so I would suggest using separate, dedicated CAD software.

The final piece of software is for controlling the CNC machine. We suggest Mach3. This program reads the G-code and controls the movement of the CNC machine.

CamBam and Mach3 can be found here: http://www.buildyourcnc.com/CNCsoftware.aspx

  • [410] what I need to buy to make this work on my GreenBull machine and the redfly?

Since this 4th axis already comes with a stepper motor, you will need a driver and some cable to connect to the driver from where the 4th axis will be placed. If you have extra space in the redFly electronics enclosure, you can fasten the driver there. You will also need some wire to connect the driver to the breakout baord.

  • What Relay do I need for the Mach3 usb motion card?

You will need a 24V DC Solid State Relay to accompany the Mach3 USB Motion Card as the outputs on that motion card requires a 24V Power Supply.

Until we start supplying this relay, you can find these relays here:

  • I DON'T HAVE A PARALLEL PORT ON MY COMPUTER. WHAT DO NEED?

If your computer does not have a parallel port, all you will need is a low cost PCI parallel adapter card (these can be found on amazon for $15-$20). If you plan on using a laptop (not recommended) you can try to find a PCMCIA parallel adapter, but many people have frequent issues with this setup. A more expensive solution would be to purchase a USB smooth stepper board. Unfortunately, we do not supply any of these adapters and cannot attest to their reliability.
