Question: Can I run your greenBull CNC off of a generator? If so, what specs would you recommend? Thanks!

Current Solution

If you want to run a greenBull CNC machine using a generator, The generator will need to allow for a minimum amount of current draw. Here is a list of items that draw current and how much current (the list does not include the laser option):

Spindle: 10 amps minimum so plan for more.
The power supply for three motors and drivers: 9 amps
The computer to run the control software: varies but out redleaf system would be a max of 2 or so.

So you are looking at about 21 minimum so you will probably need a 25 amp generator.

  • What would be your recommendation for "power supply 2 (24vdc)" connecting to USB motion card?

    A 24V connection to the USB motion card is only needed if you are using limit switches (inputs), powering the spindle/VFD speed and direction, and for the outputs, for powering other devices (mist, coolant, etc.).

    If you are using a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive, also called Inverter) for a spindle, they typically have a 24V out terminal that can be used with our USB motion card. If you are not using a spindle/VFD (we highly recommend one), then you will need to purchase a 24v power supply to power that side of the board.

    The outputs mentioned above are to connect to external devices and will require a relay (a mechanical switch that is controlled by a digital signal). This mechanical switch can turn on a device like coolant and mist, or even a router, if you are using one. A relay is required to turn on these devices because the devices are typically higher voltage, like mains (110v or 220v). So, a relay can turn on or off a high voltage device with a lower voltage (24v) signal.

    Yes, absolutely! Our machines use industry standard drivers. The WinCNC offers a control interface that plugs directly into the computer motherboard that will output standard step pulses to be delivered to industry standard drivers such as ours.

  • While motor tuning what are the recommended steps per inch, velocity, and acceleration for the GreenBull CNC?

    In the customer service live, just enter "motor tuning" and it will give you a list of all the recommended or default settings for our machines. However the acceleration and velocity for the greenBull(other machines) will be an actual determination on your trials. You will want the highest possible acceleration and velocity without the motors stalling, so you can do increments of ten to be on the safe side, if it is too slow try increments of 25.

    The steps per inch is dependent on the microstepping:
    Steps/Inch for the x and y
    Steps = 200 motor steps per revolution x 16 microsteps = 3200 steps
    Inches = sprocket number of teeth x pitch of the sprocket = 14 x .25" = 3.5 inches
    steps/inch = 3200 / 3.5 = 914.28
    This is really a starting point. You will then need to use the mach3 calibration function to get the perfect steps/inch value. Use as long a measurement as possible when calibrating.

    Velocity:
    Start with a value of 1000 ipm. Increase this value with a relatively low acceleration at about 10. You will notice at a particular velocity that it will stall. This is your stall velocity. I would take the stall velocity and reduce it by about 30% to 50% which should give you a good final safe velocity.

    Acceleration:
    Once the velocity is found, raise the acceleration until it start to stall at a low velocity. Reduce the acceleration by about the same percentage to stick with a safe acceleration.

    The acceleration is mostly dependent on torque (current) and the top speed is dependent on the amount of voltage.

    Give some tests with all of the axes running at the same time. If you notice and stalling, reduce velocities and acceleration depending on when the stall happens (top end, or acceleration curve).

  • All of the pics and videos show your cncs cutting sheet materials, I'm interested in carving 3d images in plastic and hardwood slabs up to 2" thick. What machine and software would you recommend?

    All of our CNC machines can carve at that depth without a problem and do 3d carving. Our typical application is cutting sheet materials, but a good percentage of our customers cut 3D bas reliefs or even more complex 3D objects using reference points and jigs.

    Most of our CNC machines have a Z travel of at least 6 inches for the smaller machines and 7 to 10 inches for our larger machines. The Fabricator Pro has a Z travel of 10 inches.

    Depending on your application, you will need to consider the length of the end mill (more than the deepest depth of the 3D carving) and the stock that you will be using. If the stock plus the length of the end mill exceed the clearance with the Z axis raised to the top extent, then you will need to consider the way the table/bed of the machine is formed (maybe with a depression to take advantage of the greater need for clearance).

    The greenBull has the capability of Z axis travel of up to 36 inches, but I would recommend, if milling wood, that the Z-axis not extend more than 12 inches to reduce deflection.

    Additional Information:
    Most of the CAM software on the market will have 3D profile machining operation capabilities. CAMBAM has a very nice 3D prpfiling feature. The Vectric line of software can definitely handle this as well.

  • How would you recommend cutting glass with a GreenBull?

    It depends on the type of cut you're trying to make and the type of glass. In general, straight cuts can be made by scoring the glass using a type of engraving bit, such as these:

    Complex curves and thicker glass is usually tackled with a diamond burr endmill and a specialized jig. Here is a nicely done you tube video giving an idea of how that works.

  • I build custom speakers and I work primarily with 5'x5' sheets of 9 ply (1/2") and 13 ply (3/4") plywood, but I occassionally cut 2" nominal thick wood as well. What kit would you recommend? Are your systems accurate enough to do angle cuts (45 deg?) thanks

    The best machine due to the width, will be the greenBull 5x which would have a cutting surface of 5' x 10'. Also our machines with spindle are accurate for 1000's of an inch, and can do 45 degree angle cuts.

  • If I use your greenBull CNC with 110 instead of 220, am I taking a reduction in functionality?

    No, the greenBull CNC will function with the same performance in 110 or 220 volts. When the voltage changes, the current compensates for the different voltage. Make sure to select the appropriate products for the voltage. If the product does in list the voltage, make sure to give us a cal to inform us so we can supply the correct components in the package for shipping.

    the greenBull can handle cutting aluminum as long as the correct bit (end mill) is used and the bit is cooled frequently to prevent chips from melting and causing damage to the bit or warping the material.

  • Whats the maximum recommended speed to lase (engraving not cutting) a shape (say triangle) using the greenBull hybrid?

    The feedrate at which to engrave using a CO2 laser will depend on the material, depth of engraving and intensity of the laser output. For instance, if engraving plastic, you can run the machine at a very high feedrate (i.e. 100-500 ipm) and a very low intensity. In converse, anodized aluminum will require high intensity and moderate feedrate. Engraving woods will require fast or slow feedrate and high or low laser intensity depending on the result desired.

    With the greenBull, be careful with changes in direction at high feedrates as there is a very high amount of inertia with all of the components on the gantry. It is good to test raster vs. vector for some engraving patterns.

  • I am interested in your Black Toe (24" X 48") machine, and am wondering if using two medium motors on the "X" and "Y" axis makes sense relative to power and alignment (racking). What would you recommend?

    it is possible to install 2 motors on a single axis but you will require another driver and motor, but wire it directly to the same pins on your breakout board. Also the orientation of your motor since it is opposite side of the original so getting it to move accordingly to the original motor it will need to be orientated correctly. The slight shift could be the cause of the rod not being completely flat where the set screws are suppose to tighten the sprocket to the rod, so sanding it to a flatter surface might fix the shift in directions.
    Currently do not have a kit or schematic available.

    Yes, you can add a touch plate kit. A touch plate works just like a limit switch. All you need are alligator clips and a conductive plate. Solder a wire to the conductive plate material and connect that to an IN (input) terminal. Connect the alligator clip to the gnd of the input and then to the end mill. Enable the home setting for the Z axis in Mach3 or Mach4 and use the "ref all home" button to home all of the axes. The z axis will home at the touch plate. Make sure that the touch plate is under the end mill when the z-axis is in the homing process.

    Limit switches are not really needed for this level of a machine, but if you do want to use them, then you will need to connect them with shielded cable and ground the shield at both ends and any other non-used wire in the cable. Limit switches are very susceptible to the motor interference. You will also need to adjust the debounce in the software you will use.

    The greenBull CNC machine kit can cut as thick as a material as you desire depending on the reach of the end mill that you provide the machine, if it is a straight vertical. The reason for this is that each pass is incremental (multiple passes at a certain depth per pass). For instance, if you need to cut a 2 inch thick piece of wood, you can make, say 3/4" passes until the target depth of 2 inches is met.

    The depth per pass, feedrate and RPM will be determined by the material: wood, plastic, metal and will also be determined by the end mill that is used for that material. Selecting the appropriate end mill is very important. Feedrate and RPM is important to make sure the end mill is as cool as it can be during the cutting process.

  • For cutting with the BlackTooth, what is the best type of clear plastic/acrylic to use, and can you recommend a source?

    The blackTooth will cut acrylic very easily. The type of acrylic (cast or extruded) is not important since the acrylic itself has 100% absorption with CO2 lasers. Any plastic retailer, even the home improvements stores will have sheets of acrylic.

    Avoid using plastics that will off-gas toxic and corrosive fumes. One example is PVC which is Polyvinyl Chloride. The burning of that material will exhaust chloride into the air and combine with the hydrogen in the air causing a chemical reaction yielding hydrochloric acid which is corrosive and highly toxic to humans.

    Always read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for any material that you intend to burn with the CO2 laser.
