  • I ordered the blacktooth laser cutter, there were only 4 red spade terminals, but the instructions pictures show that there should be more and would include blue spade terminals

  • There are no instructions on how to assemble the laser control unit housing that came with my 40w blacktooth laser kit. How can I get instructions for how to assemble the control interface housing? Every configuration I try blocks the wire connection ports.

What laser controller model number do you have?

    Additional Information:
Hey - the model number on the laser controller is
    AWC708C
    S/N:708014243

    Additional Information:
Thanks for the model number. I am going to fabricate the parts and put it together myself to see the issue. We made this modification to the blackTooth laser cutter to better house the new laser controller that we wanted to add to the laser, but that may have been for the AWC608. If there is an issue with my assembly, we will create a new part that will correct the issue and send it to you.

    Additional Information:
    Thank you for the update!

  • WHERE ARE THE WIRING DIAGRAMS FOR BLACKTOOTH LASER CUTTER IN INSTRUCTIONS?

You can find the wiring diagrams for the blackTooth on step 105 and 106 on the list of instructions on the blackTooth page. Step 105 pertains to the parallel breakout board and step 106 pertains to the USB interface board.

  • my 40w blacktooth laser kit with laser control unit only came with one controller connector, but the unit has two controller ports. Should I have two wires or do I just use controller port number one?

What is the model number of the laser controller?

    Additional Information:
Hey - the model number on the laser controller is
    AWC708C
    S/N:708014243

    Additional Information:
Do you need any additional information here? I really want to get going on it this weekend!

    Additional Information:
Sorry about that. If you are referring to the CN1 and CN2 connector, I don't believe it is needed if it didn't come with the connector. The components that we send to the customer is the same package that is sent from the manufacturer of the product. I would try connecting it to the CN1 connector of both units and test the interface (control panel).

    Additional Information:
The manual for the AWC 708 shows the two ports CN1 and CN2 connected, but that may just be for thorough documentation if the CN2 is needed for some reason. Do you have a copy of the manual or know where to find it? If not, I will put the document link here.

  • WHAT SOFTWARE CAN BE USED WITH THE BLACKTOOTH LASER CUTTER?

If you take the standard parallel cable BoB (Break Out Board), then you will need control software (Mach 3 or EMC2) and CAM software to make your G-Code (such as CamBam). Personally I use CamBam and Mach 3, they work beautifully but don't expect to turn them on and know how they work out of the box. Give yourself a few weeks to get familiar with the basics. CamBam is VERY powerful software for it's price. I'm surprised how much I keep learning on what I can do with it...I highly recommend it if you want as much control as possible.

Mach 3 + CamBam as a bundle costs $310. EMC2 will give you a free replacement for Mach 3 and is exclusively for Linux.

If you use the USB BoB, it will cost an extra $75 + $75 for the software. This is an all-in-one package so no need for Mach 3 or CamBam.

For etching rasters (jpeg, bmp, tiff, non-vectors, photos), I highly recommend PicEngrave. It has been a labor of love for the past 9 years and John has done a wonderful job with it. It easily compares in quality compared to software that is in the $200-$300 range. John's software runs $40 and can be found here: http://picengrave.com/ (don't let the modest website fool you, this stuff can do amazing things). DotG and the Mach3 engrave plugin are two other options and instructions can be found on Dustans page in the gallery on buildyourcnc.com website.

  • When I start my spindle I get a emergency stop in Mach 3. I have run shielded cable and it is grounded at the VFD it is wired per you site instructions. any idea what to check

You will definitely want to adjust your debounce setting in mach3 if your emergency or limit switch is engaging.

  • Originally bought the Blacktooth Laser kit, but the upgraded laser tube size and needed a larger casing. With that I need to upgrade the belts to a 36" run. Can you advise whether the mxl.08" timing belt is sufficent or do I need the .2"in.

The mxl 0.08" pitch is fine for moving the weight of a gantry that contains a 40 watt laser tube and optics. I would not advise this timing belt for CNC applications that need to move heavy items such as spindles, routers, and heavier structures that are required to move these spindles and routers around.

The mxl 0.08" pitch timing belt is also great for 3d printers.

  • My Spindle has 4 pins but only the U, V and W terminals at used for the Spindle. What about the 4th pin?

The terminals of U, V and W from the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) connects to the three coils (first three pins of the connector) of the spindle. The 4th pin in the spindle is typically not connected; however, bring a wire from the PE (Protective Earth or Earth Ground) from the VFD and connect it to one of the screws of the connector on the spindle. This will ground the body of the spindle.

    Additional Information:
The winding in your motor is start connected, U, V & W are the 3-phases of the motor and the 4th one is the common. Same as star connection.

  • Also on the 3 axis combo, the last item on the tutorials page points to wiring instructions and links to videos. The (I assume) written instructions do not load and the videos seem to be unavailable

There are written instructions located at each component (product) page. On the page for your interface board, you will see a datasheet that shows the wiring diagram from that board to the drivers, limit switches and computer. On the page for the stepping motor that you have, there is a datasheet that shows the wiring scheme from the motor to the driver and also has the amp rating for configuring the driver.

  • Are the kits provided with printed instructions or a hi-res version of whats online?

Some of our kits use video instructions to complete the assembly and those videos can be downloaded from youtube. The kits that offer illustrations and narrative associated with the illustrations are intended to be used directly from that product page. If you wish to receive printed instructions, please call us to specifically request this.
