  • What do you suggest for lubrication on the rails of the VLXL?

The X-axis rails on the Vertical Laser XL are the round rails found here:
    https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/mechanical-rails-linear-guide-rails-20mm

    And use these rail blocks:
    https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/mechanical-rails-linear-ball-bearing-block

You want to use lubrication/grease for a couple of reasons.
    - The round rail, if subject to moisture, can rust over time. Most oil based lubrication will help prevent this from happening.
    - The bearings in the linear guide will be constantly in contact with the round rod of the linear guide. Grease with a NLGI grade 3 specification and one with a good adhesion property so the grease will remain on the surface of the guide for a longer period of time.

  • wHAT IS THE SMALLEST LENGTH SHAFT I CAN USE FOR YOUR #25 DRIVE SPROCET?

The hub length of the drive sprocket and the other mechanical devise that is used to connect on the shaft will determine the length of the shaft needed for use with the drive sprocket.

The hub lengths for our drive sprockets are 1/2". So if you are connecting the drive sprocket to a motor, your motor shaft will need to be at least 1/2" in length.

  • WHAT LENGTH OF CABLE DO I NEED FOR A BLAKCFOOT

The blackfoot requires a total of 50 feet of cable.

The X axis needs 15 feet
The Y axis needs 17 feet
and the Z-axis needs 18 feet

These are 20 gauge 4 conductor cable.

  • WHAT CAUSES RINGING IN YOUR EAR AND HOW CAN YOU STOP IT?

Tinnitus . Learn to love it. No really you should see a doctor. Make sure. White noise will help you sleep when it gets loud.

    Additional Information:
I learned, too late, that if a sudden loud event causes tinnitus, see an audiologist IMMEDIATELY. They can do something about it if addressed within a day or so.

Wear hearing protection...always. Loud noises trigger my tinnitus, and headphones and ear plugs (when out & about or at the movies, subway, etc) help tremendously. Mine are rated 33dB.

  • DO NEED LIMIT SWITCHES, IF SO WHAT IS YOUR RECOMMENDATION?

Limit switches are not really needed for this level of a machine, but if you do want to use them, then you will need to connect them with shielded cable and ground the shield at both ends and any other non-used wire in the cable. Limit switches are very susceptible to the motor interference. You will also need to adjust the debounce in the software you will use.

  • WHAT LENGTH OF MOTOR CABLE SHOULD BE USED WTIH THE BLUECHICK V4.2

The recommended total length of motor cable should be 15 feet for the blueChick v4.2

    Z - 6 feet
    Y - 5 feet
    X- 4 feet

    20 AWG 4 conductor

If your drivers will be positioned farther from the machine, you may need longer cable.

  • WHAT ARE THE BLACKTOOTH LENS SIZES AND FOCAL LENGTH SPECIFICATIONS?

The lens is 20mm wide and a 50.6mm focal length (the one included). This lens will stand up to at least 30PSI air assist.

The mirrors are 25mm wide mirrors.

Focal length is the distance from the lens to the material for the laser converge into the best focal point. If a lens is listed as 2". You measure 2" from the lens to the material, this will be the tightest point the laser can go before it starts to re-expand again losing focus.

  • I DON'T HAVE A PARALLEL PORT ON MY COMPUTER. WHAT DO NEED?

If your computer does not have a parallel port, all you will need is a low cost PCI parallel adapter card (these can be found on amazon for $15-$20). If you plan on using a laptop (not recommended) you can try to find a PCMCIA parallel adapter, but many people have frequent issues with this setup. A more expensive solution would be to purchase a USB smooth stepper board. Unfortunately, we do not supply any of these adapters and cannot attest to their reliability.

  • Hey Patrick, could you get me the set screw size for the Y drive pulley on the VLXL?

The drive pulley we use on the VLXL is here:
    https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/mechanical-Drive-Pulley-!2-pitch-15-teeth-XL

since it doesn't show the set screw size, I will need to answer this question (and update the description of that part) first thing tomorrow morning.

    Additional Information:
The set screw size for the 14 teeth 0.2 inch pitch XL drive pulley is an M4 size 0.7mm pitch screw.

  • WHAT SIZE COLLET IS IN YOUR 1.5 KILOWATT SPINDLE?

The collet in the 1.5 kW spindle is an ER-11 and cannot reach the 1/2" size. I would consider the 2.2 kW spindle instead.

  • How do I wire the limit switches on the VLXL? Also, where do I place them? You included 2 rotary and two other limit switches.

You can actually select many places for the switches, depending on where you think your zero will be. I will take pictures of where we positioned our switches. We set the positions so the zero is at the bottom left corner of the machine.

    Additional Information:
    I will take pictures tomorrow.

    Additional Information:
Thank you. Just want to finish before the holiday.

    Additional Information:
Not a problem at all and my apologies for not having that information. I have been meaning to put up a video on the limit switch connection as it is somewhat difficult to explain the process in words and diagrams.

    Additional Information:
    Any update?

    Additional Information:
I plan on driving to the office later today and take pictures.

    Additional Information:
Thank you. I've just done almost everything else. Just waiting for the grade 3 grease in the mail. Also, where do you suggest connecting the cable carriers? I ran everything through the top but the carrier is getting kind of full. Because of that, it is pushing the belt out when the gantry moves.

    Additional Information:
I will take pictures of those connections as well.

    Additional Information:
    Much appreciated.

    Additional Information:
    It’s my pleasure.

    Additional Information:
I’m almost to the office. I’ve been shuttling my kids around today. Sorry for the wait.

    Additional Information:
I’m adding the images to the end of the VLXL instructions.

    Additional Information:
The limit switch connections use the NO (Normally Open) terminals. That means that the switch, when not engaged, is normally open (no connection between the com and the NO terminal). When the switch is engaged, then the connection is closed and the NO and COM terminal become connected, making a circuit.

    Additional Information:
Did you bend the arm on the x switch? Or can you mount it flush with enough give to trigger? Same on both sides?

    Additional Information:
It does look like it is bent in the picture. No, you do not need to bend the arm of the rotary switch.

    Additional Information:
We only have the rotary switch on one side.

  • DO YOU TYPICALLY PUT SPOILER BOARD ON TOP, IF SO HOW ATTACH IT?

Yes, this is a must. You can attach the spoil board on the machine with screws, or you can setup a clamping system. We just screw it down.
