Question #: 14505

Question: Do you offer a touch plate kit? If not can a touch plate kit be added to your machines if so whats the process?

Current Solution

Yes, you can add a touch plate kit. A touch plate works just like a limit switch. All you need are alligator clips and a conductive plate. Solder a wire to the conductive plate material and connect that to an IN (input) terminal. Connect the alligator clip to the gnd of the input and then to the end mill. Enable the home setting for the Z axis in Mach3 or Mach4 and use the "ref all home" button to home all of the axes. The z axis will home at the touch plate. Make sure that the touch plate is under the end mill when the z-axis is in the homing process.

Here is a tutorial I made a while ago that explains this:

  • what options can you offered to international customers to assist in them building one of your machines? International shipping of a kit would be too expensive.

We are able to ship internationally but unfortunately we cannot control the shipping costs incurred for international customers. However, if you are associated with educational programs or Makerspaces and/or Fab Labs we do offer certain discounts in some cases. Please send an email to customer service for more information on receiving a quote.

  • what do you mean by Kits , are they complete machines ready for use or prototypes to be followed?

Our kits include all of the parts needed to put a whole working machine together. However, understand that the kits are quite advanced and require a good level of mechanical competence to be completed correctly. We offer assembled machines for those that can't assemble these machines due to their complexity and need for fastening the overall components in a way that there is good smooth and tight motion, minimizing backlash to the fullest.

We do have a few kits that you need to supply the table which include the greenBull 4x,5x and 6x, and the blackFoot. The tables would be far to large and heavy to ship. Our greenBull Kit is our best selling machine. All of the other machines are all inclusive.

  • I am converting a 12x36 lathe over to CNC, I am interested in a 2 axis kit. I would love one stepper motor to be no smaller than 1200oz. , and another at 6000z. Is this something that you could offer? I have two other cnc machines but this is my first converstion on my own.

We may be able to source those motors. Curious, the 6000 oz-in motor is pretty big. Do you mind explaining the application of the CNC machine and the structure that would require the large motor?

    Additional Information:
The largest motors we can offer is 3900 oz-in without any mechanical help. 6000 oz-in can be resolved by mechanical means as an alternative.

  • So the only way to get one of your machines is to buy it already cut, and/or assembled? I can't cut one on my existing machine?

That is correct, the only manner to get our machines is to buy one of our kits. We do not provide or sell our plans, the only CNC machine you can find on our website will be the scratch build kit and plans which is a 20' x 40' , (https://buildyourcnc.com/Documents/CNC%20Kit%201-1.pdf).

  • Do you have a laser kit that can be fitted onto another brand CNC router?

We don't have a laser kit to retrofit another CNC router other than ours, but we can create one. Some things that may help:

    - You are located close to use so we can work closely with you to implement to retrofit,
    - or you can provide very detailed drawings or measurements so we can use them to create the necessary parts for the kit.

Other things that you need to understand:

    - A laser has a number of parts that will bulk up the head of the CNC router causing a bit more inertia which may require lowering the acceleration for smooth ramping up and down of the velocity

    - The bulk of the parts required for the laser may restrict the travel of the x and/or y axes.

    - The nozzle of the laser will be offset from the end mill of the spindle.

Can you tell me the brand of the CNC router that you would like to stick a laser on? (you can answer by submitting additional information.

  • how much would your vertical laser kit cost without the wood components and door plastic shipped to Canada

Good question. I will need to add up the cost. However, the complete kit with the wood components will cost in the range of $300 to $500 using freight.

    Additional Information:
I will add a price option on the Vertical Laser XL page that shows the assembly price without the wood structural parts. Are you wanting the rails included in the price?

    Additional Information:
Hi, I was expecting an email answer, I did not know that you answered. Also I am in Fiji, not Canada. There is a flaw with your question form, It would not accept Fiji because we have no postal codes, so I put in my old Canadian code so that it would accept my question.

Yes we would need the rails and any mechanical and electrical components. Our plan is to build it against a wall in a shipping container.

If you do not have a suitable freight forwarder I can ask at this end because people frequently receive shipping containers.

    Thank you,

    George

  • Can any of your CNC kits be adapted to work with a manual wood lathe?

It's best to design a machine specifically for a lathe rather than adapting an existing machine kit to an existing lathe. If you are interested in us designing a machine like this, let us know.

  • I need to replace the fried electronics box for my 6090 wood router. Do you offer a play and play, no wiring required, kit? If yes, how much? If no, can you recommend one?

Yes, we offer a CNC electronics assembled package called the redFly, redLead and redSprout. If you already have a computer, I would recommend the redFly. You would still need to add connectors to the ends of your motor cable.

  • I purchased Mach3 from buildyourcnc dont know what verson i need to use in VCarve as the processor. There are 8 2/3Mach listed

You will probably have post processors like the following listed:
    Mach2/3 ATC Arcs (inch)
    Mach2/3 ATC Arcs (mm)
    Mach2/3 Arcs (inch)
    Mach2/3 Arcs (mm)
    Mach2/3-WrapX2A ATC Arcs (inch)
    Mach2/3-WrapX2A ATC Arcs (mm)
    Mach2/3-WrapY2A ATC Arcs (inch)
    Mach2/3-WrapY2A ATC Arcs (mm)

If you have an Automatic Tool Changer, use the post processor with the ATC in the name. For most applications and if you don't have an ATC (automatic tool changer), use the Mach2/3 Arcs (inch) or (mm) post processor.

  • I'm new to CNC and just finish building my router.I need software for my post processor and not sure if your product is what I need?

You will need a CNC software that will control your router cnc machine, and your design CAD/CAM software will need to know the CNC software you plan on using so the post processor in the CAM software can create the g-code for the CNC control software. So if you have for example, Mach 3 and our parallel breakout board, you can use the Mach 3 post processor in your design software.

  • I notice your kits cost about 25% more than the same kit on ebay, is there a difference in quality or some other feature of your kits?

The kits on eBay are generally older versions of the machine kits that came with less options.

  • I am wondering if you also supply plans for the bigger machines, also the vertical CNC that you have in your product range?

The only plans we sell for any machine, are the ones that relate to the book we create found here, http://www.buildyourcnc.com/Book.aspx

Here is the link to those plans that we sell, http://www.buildyourcnc.com/cnckitintro.aspx

We do not sell any other plans, only full kits, with or without electronics.

  • I was wondering if it is at possible to get a autocadd drawing of the pieces that need to be built for your cnc hardware kit

The files and hardware option for our machines has been removed from the site due to the following reasons:
Difficulty for the end use of the files and the challenges (and time/money) on our side to assist in using these files.
The abuse of these files over the internet.
Ultimately may reduce the sales of machines keeping us in business.
Sadly, this is what has come out of our company attempting to be open; however, the machines sold on this site is still far lower in price than the competition for the quality that we provide as we have a great desire to engender the cottage industry to fulfill their need for low end manufacturing. My sincere apologies if this causes any inconvenience.

NO, is not possible, I can help with the shipping cost

  • CAN YOUR PRODUCTS OF MACHINES BE USED TO CREATE PLASMA TABLE?

The plasma nozzle must be close to the cutting area and you will need some way to keep the nozzle at the right level with some type of device. The spray is downward, so you will need a contained area with a sheet of water at the bottom to extinguish he spray. You should have no problem using our machines for this application since you would need to product the table bed.

  • Using your USB control board, is it possible to install and use a Z axis touch plate? If yes, what board connections would it be installed to?
  • Would any of your CNC laser machines be appropriate for welding of thermoplastic materials?

That is a good question. We have not tried to weld thermoplastics using our CO2 Lasers. It is possible since the laser outputs a heat source and at the right intensity and speed, the thermoplastic can be heated and melted rather than instantaneously vaporized and off gassed. I have done research to see if CO2 laser can weld thermoplastics with positive results.

Our CO2 lasers are typical of other laser cutters on the market, so if their literature, or examples you have found, successfully weld thermoplastics, then ours will probably be able to as well.

In some cutting test with different speeds and intensities, the kerf has welded back together; however, this was caused by an unintentional process rather than an intentional one.
