Question #: 409

Question: DO I NEED A PARALLEL PORT?

Current Solution

If your computer does not have a parallel port, all you will need is a low cost PCI parallel adapter card (these can be found on amazon for $15-$20). If you plan on using a laptop (not recommended) you can try to find a PCMCIA parallel adapter, but many people have frequent issues with this setup. A more expensive solution would be to purchase a USB smooth stepper board. Unfortunately, we do not supply any of these adapters and cannot attest to their reliability.

  • Does your breakout board work with low voltage 3.3volt parallel ports?

The breakout board will work with 3.3 volt parallel port. The integrated circuits on the board bring the level up to 5 volts for each pin when engaged. The breakout board is powered from the USB port and this is where the 5 volts is acquired.

  • is there a pci express parallel card that supports mach 3 with windows 7

Any parallel PCI-E card should work with mach 3 and windows 7, but you will need to know the port that the card will be using (example: 0x378).

In mach 3 go to Config/Ports&Pins/PortsSetup&AxisSelection

    Additional Information:
Once the PCI adapter is installed. Check the device manager on that lpt port and look at the I/O range. You will need to use the first I/O address in the range for the port address entry in Mach3.

  • why does the parallel port breakout board have usb port?

The parallel breakout board contains a USB port to power the board. Through the USB port, the computer delivers 5v of stable power to the parallel breakout board, but doe not provide any communication as would normally be associated with USB connectivity.

The reason we elected to use the USB port to provide power is to remove the need for an external 5v wall adapter.

  • I CANNOT INSTALL THE PARALLEL PORT DRIVER

If you are unable to install the parallel port driver during the Mach3 installation process, it is most likely that you are running a 64-Bit version of Windows. Install a 32-Bit version, and retry the Mach3 installation.

  • What are the pin numbers on the parallel port to use on Mach3?

The pin numbers for our Parallel BoB, will be x-axis: step pin 2, dir pin 3, y-axis: step pin 4, dir pin 5, and for the z-axis step pin 6, dir pin 7.
Step port and dir port, for x,y,z-axes will all be 1.

  • How do I wire to nema 23 motors parallel

Wiring two motors in parallel is pretty easy.

    Here are the steps:
    - You need to have two stepper motors and two stepper motor drivers.
    - Each stepper motor will be connected to its own stepper motor driver.
    - Both stepper motor drivers are connected to the same CP and CW pins on the interface so the same signal is delivered to both drivers.
