Question: my z axis action is reversed.help its a blackfoot

Current Solution

If any axis is moving in the opposite direction, go into the Mach3 settings and first verify the hotkeys are set appropriately (example: Page Up for Z Axis up). If this does not solve the issue, check under Config>Ports and Pins> Motor Outputs: to verify all settings are correct (Pin and Port numbers and enabled/disabled signals).

    The long wood piece that attaches to the Z-axis may have different dimensions on the newer blackFoot version. Take a measurement of your current length of the long wooden piece and tell us what it is so we can compare them. customerservice@buildyourcnc.com

    The greenBull machine has a sturdier gantry than the blackFoot, so you can be more agressive with the cutting feedrate (cutting speed). The blackFoot is also a good machine, but it all comes down to the speed at which you want to produce the fabrication

    The spindle is also highly recommended for it's quietness and easier cleanup (no fan blowing the dust in the air)

  • CONVERT BLACKFOOT 3D PRINTER

    To convert our CNC machine into a 3D printer, an extruder would need to be attached to the z-axis. The extruder could be added next to the spindle, or the spindle can be removed and the extruder replace the spindle.

    The former would be an interesting combination where you would be able to extrude plastic and then run the spindle afterwards to do some finishing passes; however, the weight of the spindle would reduce the performance. Without the spindle, the z-axis will move with reduced inertia.

    The electronics would be mostly the same with the addition of an extruder controller and a main controller board to control the existing drivers.

  • Planning to Buy Greenbull or Blackfoot 4'x 8' Long "Z" Axis. My questions are: what is the hight between the table and the Gantry ? what maximun Z can useful engraving? if I instal a rotating 4 Axle. what maximun diameter can be useful.

    Only our greenBull CNC machines will be able to use the long Z-axis, due to structural construction of the greenBull over the blackFoot.
    The height from the table top to the bottom of the gantry is: 4.25"

    Both the maximum cutting height and diameter, will be dependent on the specific end mill/router bit you plan on using, since they can vary in length.
    The maximum cutting height (useful to engrave or cut material)is: with spoil-board 3.875", without a spoil-board is 4.625"
    The maximum diameter will (estimated) is: 3"

    Specifically dealing with our greenBull long Z-axis CNC machines, depending on how you specifically design the table you can have more cutting height and a larger diameter clearance. If you only create a frame for the machine with a hollow center(adjustable midsection), allowing you to have a greater clearance.

  • What is the replacement Z axis motor for a SM60HT86-2008BF-U2?

    This is a NEMA 24 motor. It could be dual shaft or single shaft, so be sure to choose correctly. Holding torque is generally measured in Nm globally, and translated to ounces/inch in the United States. Our NEMA 24 motors are rated at 425 oz/in holding torque.

  • My Z axis stepper is "cogging," new problem on an older machine, any solutions?

    If by cogging, you are referring to the lack of torque by the presence of the lack of current to the motor, I would check the wires coming from the motor to see if there is any chafing, causing either shorting, or a connection issue. This happens on older motors due to the method of holding the wires steady using zip ties or other form that can cut the insulation of the wires. If you see this phenomenon only at specific locations on the axis, then wire chafing could be the culprit. But, can also be friction on the lead screw/anti-backlash nut.

    Check the anti-backlash nut for any presence of oily debris. Remove this debris and re-lubricate the lead screw.

    Check between the coupling at the motor shaft and the bearing that is positioned against the coupling. There should be a small outside diameter shim washer between the coupling and the inside race of the bearing. If there is no shim washer, then the coupling is rubbing against the outside race, causing friction, or binding.

    Thank you for your quick response. I found the Z-axis binding with the anti-backlash nut. What would you recommend to lubricate the anti-backlash nut and lead screw?

    Additional answer:
    I would recommend using 3-in-1 oil to lubricate the lead screw and the anti-backlash nut. Don't worry about the material of the anti-backlash nut breaking down since it is made of Delrin, a plastic that can be exposed to lubricants and oils.

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN A 2.5 AXIS MACHINE?

    An axis is a direction of motion controlled by the CNC machine control. It can be linear (motion along a straight line) or circular (a rotary motion). The number of axes a machine has determines it's machining capabilities. A 2.5 axis machine really has three moving axes, but only two axes can move together (most machines sold today are full three axis machines). For machining centers, a three axis machine will have three linear axes. A four or five axis machine will have three linear axes as well as one or two rotary axes.

    Note that 2.5 versus 3 axis has yet another context. 2.5 axis machining requires that the machine have three axes, but only two axes must be moving simultaneously at any one time. (Simple operations, like drilling and most milling, fall into this category). On the other hand 3-axis machining requires that all three axes be moving at the same time (More complex operations, like the machining of sculptured surfaces required in molds and airfoils, fall into this category.)
