Question: Hello, will the 5x10, 40w laser cutting table cut nylon fabric like 1000D Cordura?

Current Solution

1000D Cordura is a woven fabric made with nylon. CO2 Lasers can cut nylon but nylon melts poorly, so the finish may not be acceptable.

Thats what i was worried about. Is there any way i could get someone to run a quick test to see how the finish is? Im trying to decide to buy it or not. Most of our edges end up getting bound, so it may not be a big deal if they are a little rough

If you send me a sample of the fabric, I have no problem putting it on my Vertical Laser XL and running a few passes at different speeds and intensities. Sounds like a good opportunity for a test on video.

Also, please send me a MSDS if you can for the specific material that you have. I want to make sure there are no harmful gasses from other constituents of the fabric.

    I would recommend using the laser to cut many types of fabrics. The condition of the burned edge will depend on the material being cut. If the material is a synthetic material, it may melt and fuse, which in most cases is a good thing. Some materials, if the laser is burning on the edge for too long, then the material will start to burn and vaporize the material. Quick passes with less intensity works well with fabrics so this undesirable condition does not happen.

  • I own a custom rug shop where we design a fabricate custom floors of many types, Have you performed any type of testing using your 40 watt and or 80 watt laser for the cutting of thse textiles.

    Yes, we have cut many fabrics with the laser. Or CO2 lasers can generally cut fabrics and textiles without a problem. What types of textiles (materials) do you need to use with the laser machine? Is there a layering of materials?

    We would cut multiple heights of different carpets and even hard surfaces such as Vinyl composition tile, Luxury vinyl tile,etc. and I'm wanting to explore etching into plain color carpets using the laser.
    I'm contemplating your 5' x 12' machine with the laser/spindle combo.
    Is it possible to make a site visit to your location and see the capabilities of the equipment ?

    Additional Information:
    Carpets are not a problem as long as there are no materials in the carpet or in the carpet binding layers that will off-gas toxic fumes. Check the manufacturer's materials of all of the parts of the carpet.

    The vinyl should not be a problem, just make sure there is no material mixed within the composite that will off-gas harmful fumes such as chloride. The chloride will mix with the hydrogen in the air and form HCL (hydrochloric acid) which can be harmful if inhaled, but can also affect some of the metallic parts in the machine.

    We have cut vinyl with the laser with great results.

    Yes, the greenLean can cut metals such as aluminum and brass. The gantry and Y carriage was designed to be rigid enough to handle these types of metals. The typical metal cutting techniques should be used, such as high feedrates to reduce heat buildup at the end mill, or the use of cutting fluids or cold air used at the end mill as is necessary with most machines that cut similar metals. This is necessary since the aluminum has a rather low melting point and can clog the end mill.

    Additional Information:
    All of our machines are capable of cutting many metals, including steel and aluminum as long as the proper CNC machining operations are used like light fast passes, and if desired, using air cooling for better performance.

    The blackTooth will cut acrylic very easily. The type of acrylic (cast or extruded) is not important since the acrylic itself has 100% absorption with CO2 lasers. Any plastic retailer, even the home improvements stores will have sheets of acrylic.

    Avoid using plastics that will off-gas toxic and corrosive fumes. One example is PVC which is Polyvinyl Chloride. The burning of that material will exhaust chloride into the air and combine with the hydrogen in the air causing a chemical reaction yielding hydrochloric acid which is corrosive and highly toxic to humans.

    Always read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for any material that you intend to burn with the CO2 laser.

    A 400w laser tube will not be a simple swap of our laser tube in our blackTooth or our spindle/laser hybrid. The overall size factor of a 80w - 400w is greatly larger than our 40w laser tube and will be the biggest issue. You will have to completely modify our units to retrofit a larger tube, which might be more costly than expected as well as more time consuming.

    Any of our machines can cut or mill tire material. What you need to consider is the machine size (will the tire fit in the machine with the proper modifications to the table) and the milling tool (end mill) used to mill or cut the tire material. The end mill will need to be specifically designed to mill the volcanized rubber material and the steel belts embedded within the tire.

    We offer a laser/spindle Z-axis attachment for our 4x8 greenBull CNC. The blackFoot 4x8 does not have a large enough gantry to accommodate the 40W laser tube.

  • Will the 80w laser cut through 1/2" baltic birch plywood?

    The 80W tube is capable of cutting 1/2" plywood, but it would probably need to be multiple passes and would not be as quick as a Spindle cut.

    I cut thru 3/8" Baltic birch at 60% power (I have an 80w Chinese laser) at a speed of 5mm per sec. It has no problem cutting thru

    on my laser I have cut one pass thru 1/2" plywood, at 90 percent power, 5mm per sec. I just don't like cutting at 90% power all the time. Again 80w Chinese laser

  • I am interested in getting your 40W laser system. How difficult will it be to increase the size to 48" x 48"?

    The blackTooth machine, as it is designed cannot be modified easily as the box within which it is contained also serve as its structure. We are currently designing a special mount for the greenBull (for the 40 watt tube) which will provide 5'x10' or 6'x12' work area and the machine is far less expensive than comparable 4'x8' laser systems. We are also developing a 4'x8' 80 watt system where the tube is in the horizontal orientation. More information can be found in the R&D section.

    What software are you using to simulate the CAM machining operations?

    I drew my part in ViaCad, opened part in CamBam to produce GCode, then Mach3 to simulate cutting part. Everything worked as it should but part was too large.

    It sounds like steps per unit is not calibrated properly. Use the Mach3 to calibrate the axes. In the settings tab, there will be axis calibration labeled just above the reset button. There is a button just just below axis calibration called set steps per unit. When the button is clicked, mach3 will present you with a dialog box asking for a measurement of how far to move the specific axis you need to calibrate (use a number that will not make the machine over run the axis). The machine will move to a certain length. Measure that length and enter it into the next dialog box that Mach3 presents to you. Do this for each axis.

    Considering that "materials being lased by may emit gasses that are harmful to humans (corrode human tissue and cause damage to respiratory organs). Always read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the material to be lased. You can find these MSDS from manufacturer websites for the material you are considering for use in the laser system."
    We successfully have worked on Thin sheets of Brasswood, glass, foam, plexi-glass. The thickest materials you will be able to successfully cut is 1/4".

    The actual cutting dimensions for our blackToe machine is 2'(24") x 4'(48"), the overall size of the structure built is a bit larger so that our customers have the actual size mentioned with each of our machines!

    Yes, I was intending to design a medium sized laser cutter and engraver but the project was put on hold. I will start the design in a few weeks (around mid Dec 2017).

    You can control our 40W laser power supply (which controls the laser tube) with an Arduino, if that is your intention. The trigger for turning the laser on and off uses a 5V level. To control intensity, you can use the Arduino PWM output. If you want the Arduino to move the machine as well (providing pulse trains to each of the stepper motor drivers) then you will need to make sure you consider the processing speed of the Arduino so you will be able to run the stepper motors at the speed you need for the laser engraving/cutting.

    Thank you! I am building a 3 axis cnc/ engraver and I think this would be a good option as well as the router head and the 3d printing head. How heavy is the tube? I may mount it directly onto one of the axis of the machine to eliminate the need to line up all three axis, similar to what you have with your xl engraver.

    The tube isn't that heavy, but when filled with water, it can get up to a few pounds. The key is to use the axis moving the nozzle for engraving as this requires fast back and forth motion. The cutting is generally dependent on the axes moving from vector to vector at a relatively slow motion, so this is not a problem.

    First, you would need a laser tube, laser power supply, laser controller and a lens holder. You may need mirrors and mirror holders if you plan on orienting the laser tube in a direction other than directly towards the work surface.

    You will need to mount the laser tube and power supply. We recommend mounting the tube and power supply to the gantry, or directly to the axis that moves across the gantry for reduced power loss and to eliminate slight drift from mirror alignment error.

    The controller will need to be connected to your existing motor drivers. If you wish to still use your plasma table for plasma cutting work, you will need to have a switch and transistor circuit to switch which controller has precedence to control the drivers (having both controllers connected to the drivers, but having a TTL circuit using buffer/gates chips that is controlled by a single switch. We can assembly this circuit for you for a fee.

    If this is a machine that we did not manufacture, you will need to create the mounts for the laser tube. We can provide guidance for a fee if needed.

    Will my existing controller not work for controlling both? What would I need to make the laser cut when the table moves. The table has a thc and enable disable circuit. Also when will the mirror mounting head assembly be in stock again?

    I'm not familiar with the controller that you use for plasma cutting. The principle is probably the same. There is two main axes for movement and a trigger signal to start the plasma cutting. Not sure if your plasma table contains a z-axis that follows closely to the work surface to get the most efficient arcing. That function could be helpful, but not necessary for the laser.

    If your controller has a standard digital level trigger control, then that would be fine.

    Laser controller have the ability to create raster style engraving. If you don't need this functionality, then a laser controller may not be needed.
