Question #: 3640

Question: what's needed to add a 4th axis to a Blackfoot 4x8?

Current Solution

You can add a head stock and tail stock on the blackFoot by designing the table in a way the head and tail stock is positioned at the correct level so the end mill will be at the correct position. The correct position will depend on the end mills that you will be using. The end mill should be centered to the center of the head stock jaw near the lowest z-axis position.

  • What would be needed to convert my blackfoot 4x8 into a 3d printer ?

To convert our CNC machine into a 3D printer, an extruder would need to be attached to the z-axis. The extruder could be added next to the spindle, or the spindle can be removed and the extruder replace the spindle.

The former would be an interesting combination where you would be able to extrude plastic and then run the spindle afterwards to do some finishing passes; however, the weight of the spindle would reduce the performance. Without the spindle, the z-axis will move with reduced inertia.

The electronics would be mostly the same with the addition of an extruder controller and a main controller board to control the existing drivers.

You can find all of the 3D printer parts here:

If you need help with fashioning a mount for the FDM extruder, please let us know.

    User response:
Yes what type of mount would I need for the FDM extruder ? Thanks Gary

    User response:
Could you be a little more specific on what type of main board I'll need to purchase the board I'm using now for my router is a serial port interface purchased from you. Thanks Gary

    BYCNC response:

The 3d printing board we sell works with an Arduino Mega 2560. We sell the Arduino here:

    https://buildyourcnc.com/Item/3D-Printer-Component-electronicsAndMotors-electronic-component-arduino-mega-2560-FDMElectronics

    and the board here:

    https://buildyourcnc.com/Item/3D-Printer-Component-electronicsAndMotors-3d-printer-mainboard-FDMElectronics-3dprintermainboard

We sell the extruder itself here:

  • What's the size and weight of the Blackfoot shipping box or boxes ?

When the items are placed in the shopping cart (clicking Add to Cart, or clicking on the check boxes for the base product and options on the machine page), there will be a small description of the packing dimensions and weight just under the description of the item.

To see these dimensions and weights, just go to "Your Cart" link located at the top left corner of the webpage, the weights and dimensions for each item (i.e. blackFoot CNC Machine, or whatever else you may have in your cart) will be shown just below each item description.

Keep in mind that the shipping prices shown are negotiated rates and not the higher retail rates.

  • How far does the X axis of the blackfoot travel per turn of the stepper motor ?

The amount traveled per turn in our blackFoot, will be dependent on the steps per inch settings that you will implement to your drivers and within the software (mach3 (ex)) motor tunning: steps per inch/ 1422.22, 1/4 on your driver will give you a different distance if used as 1/2 or 1/8 etc.

  • my z axis action is reversed.help its a blackfoot

If any axis is moving in the opposite direction, go into the Mach3 settings and first verify the hotkeys are set appropriately (example: Page Up for Z Axis up). If this does not solve the issue, check under Config>Ports and Pins> Motor Outputs: to verify all settings are correct (Pin and Port numbers and enabled/disabled signals).

  • The rods in my blackFoot gantry connected to the x-axis motor are bowing or bending.

We are using the 1/2" rods in the gantry now. You can opt to purchase 1/2" rods and new gantry sides which will accept 1/2" ID bearings.

  • Do you make blackfoot with leadscrew for x and y axis?

Currently we do not have any lead screw driven machines except our scratch build kit, all other models use either timing belt or are chain driven.

  • BlackFoot CNC: Where should z-axis limit switches be placed?

The limit switch for the z-axis should be placed in a location where nothing can interfere with CNC process, now for our blackFoot, referring to step 115(https://www.buildyourcnc.com/blackFoot48v40.aspx#prettyPhoto/120/) it will be placed 1-1/4"(may be adjusted) down from the top wood piece(vacuum holder). So contact will be made from the location of the anti-backlash nut wood piece and the limit switch stopping it from going to high.

  • can you ship a greenbull of blackfoot to japan

You can determine if the country is serviceable by:
    - selecting the items you want to purchase on the website
    - go to the cart (shopping cart top left of any webpage)
    - log in, or register
    - Enter the address and click on calculate shipping.

The webpage will return the direct rates and whether your area is serviced or not. Feel free to enter any address as long as you are able to receive the package from that address.

    Additional Information:
I did that and got two options: UPS ($1400) or FEDEX ($3800). Maybe FEDEX is already including the customs fees and import taxes, I don't know. I am afraid of buying it and having problems with customs later. That is why I asked if you guys have ever sent any machine to Brazil just to check if everything went fine with customs.

  • Can the 4x8 blackfoot be outfitted with some type of reference pins?

Our CNC Routers can be outfitted with other devices and configured in so many ways. However, I'm not familiar with reference pins. Are you referring to input for feedback?

    Customer response:
Looking to add something like this:

    https://youtu.be/J7kcXfn0HKk

Does the Blackfoot have a preset x and y home point so pop up pins will be accurate?

    Buildyourcnc response:
Oh yeah. You can easily add those types of pins to any of out machines. You can even use pins for registration as well so you can machine two sides of your work-piece so the design matches.
