Question #: 769

Question: What length of wire do you recommend for the black toe (2'x4') between the spindle and VFD?

Current Solution

The length of the cable from the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) to the actual spindle should be about the same as the z-axis cable from the z-axis motor to the z-axis driver which is recommended at 11 feet. This is locating the VFD about at the midpoint of the machine.

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • What gauge wire between the VFD and the 2.2K spindle? The spindle connection posts are very tiny, equivalent to 18 gauge, but that seems too small. What do you use?

The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.

  • I purchased the 4.0kw spindle and VFD a while back, and have just installed a PMDX-107 controller... do you have any examples of the wiring connections for the SL-240EE to PMDX-107?

If you want speed control, it is recommended to use the RS-485 connection on the VFD and use the control program such as Mach3 to communication serially with the VFD using this RS-485 connection.

If you would rather use a controller such as the PMDX-107 to simulate the effect of a potentiometer using the Aref, Aout and Agnd and the Rev/Dir and Fwd/Run terminals to control operation and direction, you can connect those to the VFD.

PMDX-107 Aout connects to the VI (analog voltage in). This is like the wiper on a potentiometer.
PMDX-107 Agnd connects to the ACM terminal on the VFD for Analog common.
PMDX-107 COM connects to DCM terminal on the VFD for Digital common.
PMDX-107 Fwd/Run connects to the FOR terminal on the VFD for Forward.
PMDX-107 Rev/Dir connects to the REV terminal on the VFD for Reverse.

Refer to your PMDX-107 manual to correctly configure your dip switch settings and make sure to calibrate (tweak) the speed control using the trimmer next to the terminals on the PMDX-107.

  • What wire size between voltage converter and VFD?

Please consult the advice of a professional electrician. The information provided below should always be confirmed by a professional electrician and you assume all risk involved when working with electricity which is potentially hazardous and lethal. Never work with instruments and wiring on live electricity.

The wire gauge used between the spindle VFD and the wall socket, or voltage converter will be determined by the current consumption of the VFD. For example, if the spindle/vfd is rated for 2.2kW and the voltage input is 220V, then 2200W/220V = 10 amps. In this case, it's best to increase the gauge for a current flow to provide a safety factor and consider 15 amps rather than 10 amps. A wire gauge that is too small will cause overheating on the wire and possibly cause the insulation to melt and cause a short. A wire gauge of 14 (copper wire) for 15 amps would be adequate. Remember that the length of the wire is important. The longer the wire, the larger gauge is needed.

It will be very short wires. Maybe 12" long.

    14 AWG should be fine.

There is a button on the front of the VFD that will cycle through RPM, Freq, and a few other readings. If there is a >> button on your VFD, that will work. If there is a mode button on your VFD, that should works as well.

0: Display current target frequency. This will display your knobs, potentiometer, setting, not the actual spindle frequency.
1: Display electric machinery run frequency. This will display the actual frequency that the VFD is currently sending to the spindle.
2: Display electric machinery run current: this will display the current the spindle is currently drawing.
3: Display input AC voltage. Self explanatory.
4: Display mother line voltage. This will display the actual voltage at the input.
5: Display output voltage. This will display the voltage at the UVW terminals for the spindle.
6: Display speed paragraph number SPx. I believe this displays which frequency is being selected (P07.00 to P07.07, or 1 to 8 respectively).
7: Display inverter temperature. This is the temp of the VFD, self explanatory.
8: Display input signal X1-X3/output signal. This simply shows the inputs/outputs associated with the external terminals.
9: Display user variable. This one I have not delved into, so it may be something to look into.
10: Display user count value. Same, this one could be useful.
11: Display temporary debugging variable. Haven't tried this one, so I can't inform of any useful information but it won't pertain to this subject anyway.
12: Display automatic multisegment run step and time. I haven't delved into this one either, but it won't show RPM.

  • How can we check our 1.5kw spindle. we get a dL error after we start to cut. it spins up fine. We checked IGBTs in the VFD and they're not shorted. We suspect intermittent short INSIDE the spindle. What do you think?

dL usually stand for a short that is occurring within the spindle or spindle wiring. I would recheck the wiring going from the VFD to the spindle, as well as the terminal on the spindle where there should've been some soldering required. We usually tend to either heat shrink or use electrical tape to cover the terminals so no contact or arching can be present.

Also depending on the VFD you have please adjust the setting pd008, to the voltage that is required (110V/220V).

If the issue proceeds please contact use at customerservice@buildyourcnc.com, for further assistance or replacement.

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARALLEL AND USB ELECTRONICS COMBOS MOTOR KITS

The parallel (printer cable) port is uses the computer as its main source of pulse trains to operate the motor driver directly. Parallel ports are a direct connection from the processor commonly referred to as GPIO pins (General Purpose I/O pins) and provides a convenient and powerful way to interface with the computer. The parallel breakout board is included in those kits only to condition those signals for use with the drivers.

The USB serves at the actual controller, sending the pulse trains, but the computer sends simple human readable instructions to the USB controller to tell the controller how to send pulses.

The non-technical differences that may serve as the most important information to you is that the parallel configurations allow for a wider variety of industry standard software that can be used to control the cnc machine. The USB that we offer requires the operator to use a software called Planet-CNC software which is a very well made and feature full cnc control software.
