Question: My VFD/inverter is showing an er.04 er 04 on the display when the spindle starts spinning

Current Solution

The Er.04 (if you are using the YL VFD), generally refers to the ramping up and ramping down of the spindle, but it can be a result of a short circuit between the VFD and the spindle. You can increase the time the spindle accelerates (ramps up to the set rpm/frequency).

    There is a button on the front of the VFD that will cycle through RPM, Freq, and a few other readings. If there is a >> button on your VFD, that will work. If there is a mode button on your VFD, that should works as well.

  • I'm trying to get the planet-cnc mist, coolant and spindle output to work. It's showing no voltage when I test

    On the Planet-CNC board, the Mist, Spindle and Coolant outputs will require a relay to switch on those devices. Test one of those terminals with a multi-meter (Mist, Coolant, or Spindle). Each of these terminals have a GND next to the terminal for the device.

    Test the voltage across the GND to the terminal with the arrow that you want to test. Go to the software and click on the device you want to test (mist, coolant or spindle) and note the voltage. If no voltage is output then check under the board to where the terminals are soldered. Re-test the terminals across the solder joints rather than the terminal block wire inputs. If you get a voltage, then there is a problem with the terminal block. If you don't get a voltage, then the board is not functioning properly.

    I activated the output signal.. I did the tests indicated and I did not get voltage. I heated the welds of the three outputs and now works coolant but no mist or spindle, what should I do?

    There are probably cold joints on the board at the chip or the resistors on the traces for those terminals. You can send the board back to us and we will repair and test the board.

  • The spindle drops on our greenBull when power is turned off. How do we stop this?

    When you say the spindle drops, are you referring to the z-axis assembly that contains the spindle? If so, did you replace the lead screw and anti-backlash nut with a ball screw? Ball screws have extremely little friction and will cause an assembly under gravity to move down. If not, your lead screw and anti-backlash nut friction is extremely small, which is surprising and I have never seen this before. I would be interested in seeing a picture of the assembly. Please send a picture to techsupport@buildyourcnc.com so I can investigate this issue further.

    We haven't replaced or disassembled anything on the z-axis. I will try to get some photos sent to you. Are there any adjustments or recommendations for PM of the z-axis assembly?

    If error shows at ramp up or at constant speed:
    1. Check for a short circuit or partial short circuit and the insulation of the output wire is sufficient.
    2. Increase the capacity or the inverter if it is too small. Replace with an inverter that has a larger capacity
    3. Extend the ramp-up time
    4. Decrease the torque and increase the set value.
    5. Check if the motor is blocked and if there is a sudden change in load.
    6. Check if there is a sudden chance in the power supply voltage.
    7. Extend ramp down time
    9. DC breaking is too high. Decrease DC breaking
    10. Replace the inverter.
    11. Check to see if there is a short circuit with the connection wire of the motor.
    12. Extend the ramp-down time or add a breaking resistor.
    13. Check the mains supply voltage and insure there isn't ant sudden change in voltage.
    14. Send the inverter for repair.
    15. Check whether the input voltage is normal
    16. check whether there is a sudden change in load.
    17. Check whether there is any phase missing.
    18. Check the fan in the inverter. Is it spinning? Is it blocked? Does it have any foreign matter stuck on the fins of the fan? If so, clear the fan.
    19. Check the ambient temperature in the space that the inverter is placed.
    20. Check for adequate ventilation for the inverter where it is placed.
    21. Check for jamming or any sudden change with respect to mechanical load.
    22. Set the V/F curve correctly.
    23. The motor is too small.
    24. The motor is hot and the insulation of the motor degraded.
    25. Check if the voltage has a large variance.
    26. Check if there is a phase missing.
    27. Contact the supplier

    You will definitely want to adjust your debounce setting in mach3 if your emergency or limit switch is engaging.

  • on the 2.2Kw water cooled spindle, what is the cooling port thread type and size?

    It is an M8 metric size on the port going into the spindle, and a 1/4" compression on the other side.

    Is the M8 port a M8x1.25 or M8x1?

    If you are referring to the book build, use a chamfer bit that is large enough to create a chamfer for most of the edge of the 3/4" thickness of the board, but still has a sliver of space for the bearing on which to ride.

    Mine is M8x1mm. I replaced the stock fitting with a brass hose barb and used "steel wire reinforced vacuum hose" with a 1/4" ID because it resists kinking and collapsing.

    The spindle water inlet and outlet fittings are 1/4 Inside Diameter and 3/8 Outside Diameter.

  • My Spindle has 4 pins but only the U, V and W terminals at used for the Spindle. What about the 4th pin?

    The terminals of U, V and W from the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) connects to the three coils (first three pins of the connector) of the spindle. The 4th pin in the spindle is typically not connected; however, bring a wire from the PE (Protective Earth or Earth Ground) from the VFD and connect it to one of the screws of the connector on the spindle. This will ground the body of the spindle.

  • I JUST RECEIVED A REPLACEMENT SPINDLE (2.2KW 220V). HOWEVER, WHEN ATTEMPTED IT USE THE NEW SPINDLE, WOULD ONLY REACH 1500 RPM. IS THERE SOMETHING NEED TO CHANGE ON CONTROLLER?

    VFD settings........
    1) To program the VFD, wire it up, plug it in. It takes several seconds to come to life.

    2) Push the PRGM button to enter programing mode.

    3 )Push the SET button. The display will read PD000.

    4) If you push the SET button again, it will display the present setting of PD000.

    5 )By pushing the up or down arrows, you can change the setting to whatever it needs to be. (This is just an example. PD000 needs no changes)

    6)Push the SET button again to lock in the setting of PD000 and advance to the next number, in this case, PD001.

    7) Push the SET button and it will display the present setting of PD001. Again, use the up and down arrows as necessary to set PD001, then push SET again to lock it in.

    Note: You can also scroll through the PD numbers with the up and down arrows.

    8) make all settings this way.

    9) by pushing the SET button you can scroll through the settings. First push of SET moves to the next number, second push displays it's setting, third push moves to the next PD number.

    Note- If you take too long, it will leave the programing mode on it's own. If it does, just push PRGM again to return to programing mode. Then press SET and continue what you were doing.

    10) Start with PD013. Set it to 1, which returns the settings to the factory settings.

    11) Then set PD005 to 400, PD004 to 400, and PD003 to 400 IN THAT ORDER.

    12) Then set the following: PD041=8, PD144=3000

    13) Set PD209=50

    That's it for the programing. You should get 24000RPM when you push RUN.

  • How should I configure the 110v vfd with 2.2kw spindle? When I use the configuration on the spindle page, I get an over-current error (e.oc.a).

    Please use these settings for our 110V VFD's:

    Change PD001 to '0' or '1' (source of run commands/one will be computer controlled)
    Change PD003 to 300 (main frequency - Hz)
    Change PD004 to 300 (base frequency - Hz)
    Change PD005 to 400 (max operating frequency - Hz)
    Change PD006 to 2.5 (intermediate frequency - Hz)
    Change PD008 to 110 (max voltage - V)
    Change PD009 to 15 (intermediate voltage - V)
    Change PD010 to 8 (minimum voltage - V)
    Change PD011 to 100 (frequency lower limit - Hz)
    Change PD142 to 7 (rated motor current - Amps)
    Change PD143 to 2 (motor pole number)
    Change PD144 to 3000 (rated motor revolution)

    To calculate RPM use this formula, in which you will have to find RPM's when you have Hz.
    1 RPM = 0.01666666667 Hz
    Formula: 0.01666666667 × RPM = Hz
    On our VFD if you select the >> button about 3-4 times, it will change from Hz, A, or ROTT.
    When the LED's are lit on Power, FOR, and ROTT, you should be able to see the RPM the spindle is running at, our maximum setting for these spindles is 400Hz / 24000 RPM.

    Yes, you can control the speed of the 2.2 kW spindle, and the other spindles we sell, through Mach3 software. It requires making some changes to the settings in Mach3 and in your inverter. It also requires an additional part, which is called a USB to Serial Converter, found on our site here:
