Question: When connecting homing switches, should I use more than one input?

Current Solution

It is ok to connect the limit/homing switches to the same input.  The machine will go through a procedure that will start with the first axis, hit the switch, pull off, move more slowly for better accuracy, then pull off again.  This procedure makes sure that the input is always in the correct state while homing.

  • Why should I use a spindle rather than a router?

    The spindle is quieter and has more consistent torque (It doesn't get "bogged down" when it starts cutting into material). It can be used with collets of varying sizes (not restricted to imperial sizes). It is water cooled and so it does not blow air downward to cool the spindle like the router does. The spindle is also machined with much higher precision than typical routers and will have a much longer life.

  • What wiring should I use to connect two motors for one axis?

    Yes, you can use 2 motors in the same axis output, however you will still need a driver for that motor! Also depending on the orientation on which you mount the motor you might have to invert the direction of the motor, and that will be simple by swapping the A+,A-, to the B+,B- locations and vice versa, from the driver to the motor wiring.

    Also you can run a slave motor using another axis on the board, and setting it up in the Planet-CNC settings.

    Planet-CNC/File/Settings/Axes, here you will enter 3 in the Number of Axes location, and then change the Function of the Axis 4 to Slave 1. There you will have the 4th axis or A-axis be a slave for the x-axis.
    Slave 1 - X-Axis
    Slave 2 - Y-Axis
    Slave 3 - A-Axis
    Slave 4 - B-Axis
    Etc...

  • Should I wire the e-stop button to an input terminal or the mains voltage

    I would recommend wiring the E-Stop to an input terminal via an NC connection. This is the industry standard. It requires a NC (Normally connected) circuit for the machine to be operational, and when the circuit breaks, the machine shuts off. This is better than having a circuit NO (normally open), open circuit that requires a circuit to be created to have the machine shut off for safety.

    Having en E-Stop run through the mains line would only work for a single circuit (or use multiple E-stops, which defeats the purpose). The E-stop connected to the input terminal would shut off all machine functions.

  • What kind of wire should I use between the invertor and the spindle?

    The type of wire that should be used between the spindle and the VFD (Variable Frequency Driver also called the inverter) should be of stranded type and we use between 18 and 16 AWG.

    The total current is divided among the three coil wires, therefor a wire gauge of 16 should be sufficient.

    Currently we use 20AWG 4 conductor.

    The motors could be wired incorrectly causing them to lock up. Make sure to check the wiring to make sure the X and Y are connected to the correct terminals.

    I use this pendant on my machine and works quite well. If you have communication issues from the pendant to the dongle, there may be too much interference surrounding the dongle, and exposing the internal antenna works well. This is something I needed to do.

    I would recommend using 14/3 power cable for the connection from the wall outlet to the VFD. The 14 is the gauge and the 3 is the number of conductors (wires) in the cable.

    Please use these settings for our 110V VFD's:

    Change PD001 to '0' or '1' (source of run commands/one will be computer controlled)
    Change PD003 to 300 (main frequency - Hz)
    Change PD004 to 300 (base frequency - Hz)
    Change PD005 to 400 (max operating frequency - Hz)
    Change PD006 to 2.5 (intermediate frequency - Hz)
    Change PD008 to 110 (max voltage - V)
    Change PD009 to 15 (intermediate voltage - V)
    Change PD010 to 8 (minimum voltage - V)
    Change PD011 to 100 (frequency lower limit - Hz)

    There are several specifications related to CAM software that you will need to consider.

    1. The CAM software will need to be able to offer the features that match that of the machine you select to perform the fabrication. Some of these machines include, standard 3 axis vertical CNC milling machine, turning machine, and 4 or 5 axis CNC machine.

    2. The CAM software will need to contain the features that you feel are necessary for how you will apply the machine. For example, are you making signs? Are you milling parts for a machine? There is a wide array of CAM software that will work well for one application and not another.

    3. The CAM software will need to work well with your workflow and processes, and have the user interface that you prefer.

  • what depth increment should I use for pocketing and profiling with the 1/2" end mill?

    The pocketing depth per pass will depend on the hardness of the material, the router/spindle you are using and on the melting point of the material. Use the feedrate that you would normally use for the size and type of end mill. You will need to test the depth per pass, starting at the full depth of the pocket. The spindle should have no problem, but if you are using a router, then it may bog down, so easing up on the depth per pass is recommended. If the spindle/router has no problem at the depths you are using, then you need to evaluate the edge finish to determine if it is acceptable. If it is not acceptable, then ease up on the depth per pass. Keep doing these steps until you have the finish and precision you expect.
