I just changed my X and Y to the ACME 1/2" 5 start lead screw. What are the motor tuning numbers. I have the book built machine.

Of course, there is always SketchUp if you are in a pinch. There are a few CAM plugins for SketchUp as well, but I've never used them, so I can't vouch for them.

CAD/CAM will get you as far as designing your parts and producing the g-code, but if you also want to run the CNC machine with your Mac, you will need a piece of software similar to Mach3 or EMC to run the g-code. I haven't been able to find anything like these programs that runs on Mac, so you may have to run Mach3 or EMC in Windows using Boot Camp or a virtual machine such as VMware or Parallels.

Personally, I would use the Mac to do all the CAD/CAM, then use a cheap PC to run the CNC machine.

There should be no problem with getting the 1/2" ID bearing on the lead screw, unless there is a bent in the lead screw or it has a piece of debris that is causing a issue.

Unless one of these items were purchased from a 3rd party, then there might be tolerance issues from the original manufacture which might cause this issue.

I am having a significant amount of trouble getting the 1/2" ID bearing to fit over the 1/2" 5 start lead screw. I can only get it about half an inch onto the rod. Any tips to get it to slide further?

On the book build machine I changed the Z axis from a 13 tpi lead screw to an acme 10 tpi 5 start lead screw. What numbers do I put into the motor tuneing boxes.

When you add a specific length to your cart, the additional length will be in inches.
So you will need to add the total length which will be 98" in total!

If this is for the scratch build kit (book CNC) the total length (98") of lead screw you will need for this machine is the three axes added together:

X-axis: 52"
Y-axis: 32"
Z-axis: 14"

The precision and number of starts for a lead screw will depend on the application. Having an ACME lead screw with 5 starts is a good balance for many applications so the machine will travel quickly along the axes with motors that hold best torque at low RPM. All three axes would benefit from 5 start lead screw for general applications.
