Question #: 3663

Question: Does the 5 start lead screw come with any nuts?

Current Solution

Our 5 Start ACME screw is sold by the inch, and sold as a single product. No anti-backlash nuts are sold with the purchase of the ACME screw as the anti-backlash nut is sold separately.

  • Does the VLXL kit come with absolutely everything you need to start up?

The Vertical Laser XL Laser Cutter comes with everything but the hookup wires and heat shrink for wiring and the tools you will need to assemble the machine and wire the electronics. You will also need a blower/vacuum to evacuate gasses in the cavity of the machine, and a compressor to provide air assist at the nozzle. 4 conductor motor cable is supplied. Water and air tubing is supplied along with the structure, hardware, mechanical parts, electronics, and chiller.

The wiring will require strippers for insulation removal at the tips and a soldering iron to solder motor wires to them motor cable. Screw drivers and hex wrenches will be needed.

Assembling this kit is not for the faint of hearts and a ton of patience is necessary. It is a very entailed process that will take a bit of time to complete. If you have any reservations at all, please consider the assembled version.

  • DOES ANY OF THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH IT COMPATIBLE MAC 10.6?

There are several CAD/CAM programs out there for MacOS. Here is a list of a few: http://www.macuser.de/forum/f53/3d-2d-cad-395058/#post4499316
I've also read good things about punchCAD: http://www.punchcad.com/
Of course, there is always SketchUp if you are in a pinch. There are a few CAM plugins for SketchUp as well, but I've never used them, so I can't vouch for them.

CAD/CAM will get you as far as designing your parts and producing the g-code, but if you also want to run the CNC machine with your Mac, you will need a piece of software similar to Mach3 or EMC to run the g-code. I haven't been able to find anything like these programs that runs on Mac, so you may have to run Mach3 or EMC in Windows using Boot Camp or a virtual machine such as VMware or Parallels.

Personally, I would use the Mac to do all the CAD/CAM, then use a cheap PC to run the CNC machine.

looking for 5 start lead screw 3/8 4 feet long i need 2 of them

  • Will the 1/2" 5 start lead screw and the 3/8" 5 start will it all work together in unison

If the turns per inch on a lead screw is different, then the nut on the lead screw will move at a different velocity.

    Additional Information:
Let me explain in more detail.

Let's say you have two lead screws:

    - 1/2" 5 starts at 10 TPI = 2 turns per inch. (5 starts / 10 TPI = 1/2 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 5 Starts = 2 turns per inch.)

    - 3/8" 2 starts at 10 TPI = 5 turns per inch. (2 starts / 10 TPI = 1/5 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 2 starts = 5 turns per inch.)

So, if two stepper motors (one connected to the 1/2" lead screw and the other connected to the 3/8" lead screw) turned 10 revolutions in 2 seconds, the 1/2" lead nut would travel 5 inches and the 3/8" lead nut would travel 2 inches at the 2 second mark.

  • how much would a 6 foot 5 start lead screw cost?

The price of the 1/2" 5 start lead screw can be found here (units are in inches):
    https://buildyourcnc.com/item/mechanical-leadscrews-lead-screw-!5-5-starts-10-tpi

I did not include the price for this answer since the price may change from time to time.

For 6 feet of lead screw, the number of inches is 72, so simple multiple the price by 72.

  • should all three lead screws be a 5 start?

The precision and number of starts for a lead screw will depend on the application. Having an ACME lead screw with 5 starts is a good balance for many applications so the machine will travel quickly along the axes with motors that hold best torque at low RPM. All three axes would benefit from 5 start lead screw for general applications.

  • I am looking for a lead screw with a 4mm lead, at least 4 starts and 36" in length, can you help me out?
  • Can I increase the travel speed of my machine with different lead screws?

Changing your lead screws from a tight to a lose lead will definitely make your machine move faster as long as your stepper motors can handle the new torque that the lead screws will impose.

Here is an example of a speed change from one lead screw to another:
    - Existing constants in the example: Stepper Motor steps 200, microstepping 1/8 making the total steps 200 * 8 = 1600.
    - Old lead screw: 1/2" allthread = 13 threads per inch (UNC)
    - New Lead Screw: 1/2" 5 starts, 10 TPI = 10 / 5 = 2 turns per inch

Old lead screw would achieve a steps per inch of:
    1600 / (1 inch / 13 turns) = 20,800 steps per inch (You can also express the calculation as 1600 * 13 = 20,800 steps/inch)

New lead screw would achieve a steps per inch of:
    1600 / (1 inch / 2 turns) = 3200 steps per inch

You can see that the new lead screw requires far fewer steps to get to the same length of travel. If you maintained the same velocity for both examples, the new lead screw would travel the same distance 13/2 = 6.5 times faster. So, if your velocity was say 10 ipm, your new velocity would be 65 ipm. That would translate to far fewer burned edges and longer end mill life!

Just remember, confirm that your motors will be able to handle the new lead screw. You will need to reduce the steps/inch causing the motor torque to increase quite a bit, so you should be fine.

  • How do I order the 10 TPI 5-start 2-turns-per-inch screws?, just shows $ per inch with no option for lenght.

When purchasing the 1/2" 5 start lead screw, the length is based on the quantity. Specify the total length you will need and we will email you (if you don't contact us first) to determine the cut lengths.

For example, if you desire 36 inches of lead screw for the X axis and 12 inches of lead screw for the Y axis, just purchase 48 inches of lead screw and tell us you need this lead screw cut so you have two lengths at 36 inches and 12 inches.

  • What doesn't come with the electronics that I will need so it will work?

Here is a list of the parts needed to get the electronics combo functioning (parallel or USB interface options):

    - 22 or 24 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect all of the drivers to the USB or parallel interface (terminal to terminal connections),
    - 18 gauge stranded hookup wire to connect the drivers to the power supply,
    - a power cable (extension cord) to connect from the power outlet to the power supply,
    - 4 conductor cable to connect the drivers to the stepper motors,
    - a USB cable to connect from the computer to the USB interface (or for power to the parallel interface),
    - for the parallel interface, a parallel cable is needed (male to male db-25),
    - a computer (for parallel interface, the computer will need a parallel port and if the computer does not contain a parallel interface, the motherboard may have a header for it, or you can purchase a parallel adapter to plug into the motherboard, very inexpensive),
    - cnc control software: for the USB interface, you will need planet-cnc software, for the parallel interface, you can use any industry standard cnc control software (the typical is Mach3 for Windows, or EMC2 or Linuxcnc for Linux (Linuxcnc.org).

5v power supply is not needed. The 5 volts signal level power is derived from the computer through USB on both types of interfaces.
