Question #: 1141

Question: should all three lead screws be a 5 start?

Current Solution

The precision and number of starts for a lead screw will depend on the application. Having an ACME lead screw with 5 starts is a good balance for many applications so the machine will travel quickly along the axes with motors that hold best torque at low RPM. All three axes would benefit from 5 start lead screw for general applications.

Respond:

Other Possible Solutions to this Question

  • If I buy the 1/2" 5 start lead screw and the 3/8" 5 start lead screws will it all work together

If the turns per inch on a lead screw is different, then the nut on the lead screw will move at a different velocity.

    Additional Information:
Let me explain in more detail.

Let's say you have two lead screws:

    - 1/2" 5 starts at 10 TPI = 2 turns per inch. (5 starts / 10 TPI = 1/2 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 5 Starts = 2 turns per inch.)

    - 3/8" 2 starts at 10 TPI = 5 turns per inch. (2 starts / 10 TPI = 1/5 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 2 starts = 5 turns per inch.)

So, if two stepper motors (one connected to the 1/2" lead screw and the other connected to the 3/8" lead screw) turned 10 revolutions in 2 seconds, the 1/2" lead nut would travel 5 inches and the 3/8" lead nut would travel 2 inches at the 2 second mark.

  • how much would a 6 foot 5 start lead screw cost?

The price of the 1/2" 5 start lead screw can be found here (units are in inches):
    https://buildyourcnc.com/item/mechanical-leadscrews-lead-screw-!5-5-starts-10-tpi

I did not include the price for this answer since the price may change from time to time.

For 6 feet of lead screw, the number of inches is 72, so simple multiple the price by 72.

  • Does the 5 start lead screw come with any nuts?

Our 5 Start ACME screw is sold by the inch, and sold as a single product. No anti-backlash nuts are sold with the purchase of the ACME screw as the anti-backlash nut is sold separately.

  • [57] What should be the wire connection

The wire connection to this driver will depend on What you are connecting to the driver.
    - For the motor connection to the driver, use the motor's datasheet for the connection schema. If the motor has 8 wires, apply the bipolar parallel connection schema.
    - For the power supply to the driver, use a DC power supply that does not exceed the rated voltage displayed on the front of the driver. 48VDC or 36VDC is recommended for this driver.
    - For the digital connections from the Mach3 USB controller to the driver, the PUL- and DIR- should connect to the gnd terminal on the controller. The XD (the X-axis is used in the example) should be connected to DIR+ and XP should be connected to PUL+ For the Pokeys57CNC, the step pin connects to PUL-, the DIR pin connects to the DIR- and the 5v connects to the DIR+ and PUL+.

WHAT DIPSWITCH SETTINGS SHOULD I USE?

  • HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MAY GRAPEVINES?

Vines are normally planted bare root from January to March and spaced 7 to 8 feet apart in rows 10 to 12 feet apart. Vertical stakes or posts with 1 or 2 wires on the side, or with “T” tops with wire are desirable supports for grapevines. Cane prune Thompson seedless and Concord. Spur prune other varieties. Frost (31oF) damages new shoots and fruit clusters in April or May, so plant where the frost is minimized. Spraying or dusting sulfur for mildew is necessary on wine and table grapes, but rarely needed with American types. (From http://ucce.ucdavis.edu/files/filelibrary/40/935.pdf )

  • How do I determine what CAM program I should use?

There are several specifications related to CAM software that you will need to consider.

    1. The CAM software will need to be able to offer the features that match that of the machine you select to perform the fabrication. Some of these machines include, standard 3 axis vertical CNC milling machine, turning machine, and 4 or 5 axis CNC machine.

    2. The CAM software will need to contain the features that you feel are necessary for how you will apply the machine. For example, are you making signs? Are you milling parts for a machine? There is a wide array of CAM software that will work well for one application and not another.

    3. The CAM software will need to work well with your workflow and processes, and have the user interface that you prefer.

  • WHICH MACHINE SHOULD I BUY, GREENBULL OR BLACKFOOT?

The greenBull can range is routing width sizes of 5 feet and 6 feet. The blackFoot has a 4 foot routing width.

    Previous Solution:
The greenBull machine has a sturdier gantry than the blackFoot, so you can be more agressive with the cutting feedrate (cutting speed). The blackFoot is also a good machine, but it all comes down to the speed at which you want to produce the fabrication

The spindle is also highly recommended for it's quietness and easier cleanup (no fan blowing the dust in the air)
