Question: bluechick cable

Current Solution

The recommended total length of motor cable should be 15 feet for the blueChick v4.2

Z - 6 feet
Y - 5 feet
X- 4 feet

20 AWG 4 conductor

If your drivers will be positioned farther from the machine, you may need longer cable.

  • Hello, do you sell the bluechick 4.2 plans ?

The blueChick is offered as a very affordable kit only. You will find that, in most cases, it is less expensive to get the kit rather than building the machine from scratch. We have had many customers give us this feedback when they tried to produce the machine in their shop.

  • Will the Bluechick v4.2 work with EnRoute CAD/CAM Software?

Our machines will work with whatever CAD/CAM software you will like to use; Now knowing what you can export from EnRoute, you will need to be aware of what formats you will need for example g-code for(Mach 3 or Planet-CNC/ Linux EMC2/CNC) is what we use to essentially move the motors to cut your design.

Here is a forum of EnRoute dealing with Mach 3 (http://store.thinksai.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=701).

  • What is each axis' resolution for the blueChick in mm or µm?

The resolution for any of our machines is based on the driver microsetting setting and the machanical parts used for each axis.

    For example:
The blueChick uses 9 tooth drive sprockets for the x and y axes.
To determine resolution use this formula:
Resolution = steps / inch or the travel in steps for one revolution of the drive sprocket
Steps = (motor steps) * (driver microsteps) or natural motor steps * microstepping setting on the driver
Inches = t(ooth coun)t *( tooth pitch) or the number of teeth for the drive sprocket

Resolution = ((motor steps) * (microsteps)) / (teeth * pitch)
In this example, the microsteps is 16 and the pitch is .25 inches
    = (200 * 16) / (9 * .25")
    = 3200 / 2.25"
    = 1422.222 steps per inch

For the z axis of the blueChick, the resolution is typically based on 4 micro steps and the travel for one turn of the motor is 1/2". Therefore:
    Resolution = (200 * 4) / .5"
    = 800 / .5"
    = 1600 steps per inch

  • What's the maximum speed at I can machining reliefs without lost steps with BlueChick?

This will depend on the material, end mill that you are using, and whether you are using a spindle or a router. The stepping motors and the mechanics on the blueChick (and the other machines as well) can move the machine very fast (x and y about 700 ipm rapids).

You will need to refer to the manufacturer specifications for the speed on the end mill with the particular material. The Onsrud end mills sold here are of top quality and can generally go faster than standard end mills. If the reliefs are in wood, you will be able to machine around 200 to 80 ipm depending on the wood and the depth per pass. Generally, you want to rough out most of the wood with a roughing end mill then finish off with a finishing end mill with a small tip and a small step over.

If you are using a router, the speeds will be slower than a spindle since the spindle can handle more torque and the torque is compensated with the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive).
