Question: what are all the settings i'd need for mach3 for use with a blackfoot and a redfly?

These are the recommend values(default) for our blackFoot CNC machine, the acceleration and velocity can be adjusted as high as the motor can rotate without stalling! Suggested increment's will be by 10's.

    The blackfoot requires a total of 50 feet of cable.

    The X axis needs 15 feet
    The Y axis needs 17 feet
    and the Z-axis needs 18 feet

    These are 20 gauge 4 conductor cable.

    LinuxCNC has excellent documents; however, I would like to offer our help in case you don't understand the information on that page. So, please use this FAQ (Question #: 13233) to state your questions by submitting additional information below.

    After reading the LinuxCNC page my first questions would be can the spindle be controlled by PWM signal? Also, what pin on the parallel port would I set to Spindle Enable and FRW?

    Additional Information:
    To connect your computer to the VFD, use a USB to RS-485 interface. RS-485 is just a serial interface protocol that uses standard 0 to +5 voltage TTL signal levels for communication (as opposed to RS-232 which uses -12v and +12 for signal level changes).

    Get a high quality interface to reduce any issues during the process. The VFD should have two terminals labeled RS+ and RS-. The USB to RS-485 adapter should have this labeled on it as well so the connections should be relatively straight forward.

    In the VFD parameters:
    PD001: 2 to accept RS485 commands
    PD002: 2 to accept frequency comands
    PD163: 1 to RS485 slave address:1
    PD164: 1 RS485 baud rate 9600
    PD165: 3 8bit, no parity, 1 stop bit

    Make sure LinuxCNC is also set accordingly:

    The PIN14 and PIN16 in the stepconf wizard should be set to unused because you don't want LinuxCNC to be outputting unnecessary signals.

    In the options step of the stepconf wizard:
    - Check the Include Halui user interface component.
    - Check the Include custom PyVCP GUI panel.
    - Check Spindle speed display

    You will want to edit the custom.hal text file located in the folder that was created from the stepconf wizard. Add these following lines:
    loadusr -Wn vfd hy_vfd -n vfd -d /dev/ttyUSB0 -p none -r 9600
    net spindle-cmd-rpm-abs => vfd.speed-command
    net spindle-cw motion.spindle-forward => vfd.spindle-forward
    net spindle-ccw motion.spindle-reverse => vfd.spindle-reverse
    net on motion.spindle-on => vfd.spindle-on

    The dev folder in linux is typically used for interfacing devices and peripherals to the computer as these devices are communicated by simple memory addresses and these files are linked directly to these addresses.

    Under the custom_postgui.hal file, change this line:

    from: sets spindle-at-speed true
    to: net spindle-at-speed => cfd.spindle_at_speed

    and add the line:

    setp vfd.enable 1

    When you start LinuxCNC, you will a spindle section with the reverse and forward buttons, a stop button and - and + buttons. Use these buttons to conform that the spindle is functioning properly. The spindle speed indicator in LinuxCNC will show the spindle speed and you can confirm that this is equal to the speed indicated on the VFD.

  • What issues will a user need to be prepared to solve with the vertical laser that they wouldn't normally see with a horizontal bed?

    I personally haven't noticed any issues with horizontal and vertical (slanted). If there is no backing on the vertical laser (something behind the workpiece), then the parts do tend to fall out. Just keep something behind the workpiece.

    On a horizontal bed, you may be able to get a bit of a better vacuum hold down, but with a machine the size of a 4'x8', there really isn't a great way to get vacuum hold down, and I haven't seen the need for it anyway.

    The required motors are the 425 oz-in stepping motors, would be the required motors to run the machine efficiently.

  • My question about motor tuning for the blacktoe in Mach 3 was for the aceleration and velocity settings what are the recomended settings

    In the customer service live, just enter "motor tuning" and it will give you a list of all the recommended or default settings for our machines. However the acceleration and velocity for the greenBull(other machines) will be an actual determination on your trials. You will want the highest possible acceleration and velocity without the motors stalling, so you can do increments of ten to be on the safe side, if it is too slow try increments of 25.

    The steps per inch is dependent on the microstepping:
    Steps/Inch for the x and y
    Steps = 200 motor steps per revolution x 16 microsteps = 3200 steps
    Inches = sprocket number of teeth x pitch of the sprocket = 14 x .25" = 3.5 inches
    steps/inch = 3200 / 3.5 = 914.28
    This is really a starting point. You will then need to use the mach3 calibration function to get the perfect steps/inch value. Use as long a measurement as possible when calibrating.

    Velocity:
    Start with a value of 1000 ipm. Increase this value with a relatively low acceleration at about 10. You will notice at a particular velocity that it will stall. This is your stall velocity. I would take the stall velocity and reduce it by about 30% to 50% which should give you a good final safe velocity.

    Acceleration:
    Once the velocity is found, raise the acceleration until it start to stall at a low velocity. Reduce the acceleration by about the same percentage to stick with a safe acceleration.

    The acceleration is mostly dependent on torque (current) and the top speed is dependent on the amount of voltage.

    Give some tests with all of the axes running at the same time. If you notice and stalling, reduce velocities and acceleration depending on when the stall happens (top end, or acceleration curve).

    The electronics and motors are powered by a 36 volt power supply running a max of 8.8 amps. You can configure the system to run on 110v or 220v.

    Additional Information:
    If you wish to use a spindle (recommended), you will need a 220V outlet. You can still use a standard router and this will consume around 11 amps, depending on the model and power of router that you choose.

    So, you can expect a total consumption of 11+8.8 = 19.8 amps.

  • What are the pin numbers on the parallel port to use on Mach3?

    The pin numbers for our Parallel BoB, will be x-axis: step pin 2, dir pin 3, y-axis: step pin 4, dir pin 5, and for the z-axis step pin 6, dir pin 7.
    Step port and dir port, for x,y,z-axes will all be 1.

    For the integrated computer for the blackTooth, the hard drive doe not need to be formatted, but will require an OS (operating system) to be installed. Ubuntu Linux can be installed with the CNC integrated software from Linuxcnc.org. Windows can also be installed.

  • How small of end mills are commonly used for cutting balsa? What thickness of balsa can these smaller mills handle?

    The size of end mills can vary to extremely tiny to very large cutting diameters. The smaller the cutting diameters, the shorter the available cutting length due to the possibility of breakage. You will first need to determine the thickness, or depth you will need to cut and find the available cut diameters for that depth.

    To cut balsa wood, almost any standard 1 to 4 flute end mill will be fine that are intended to be used with wood. The end mill will state the materials that it can cut. Wood end mills will exhibit a flute geometry that is more stretched out to straight.

    The pocketing depth per pass will depend on the hardness of the material, the router/spindle you are using and on the melting point of the material. Use the feedrate that you would normally use for the size and type of end mill. You will need to test the depth per pass, starting at the full depth of the pocket. The spindle should have no problem, but if you are using a router, then it may bog down, so easing up on the depth per pass is recommended. If the spindle/router has no problem at the depths you are using, then you need to evaluate the edge finish to determine if it is acceptable. If it is not acceptable, then ease up on the depth per pass. Keep doing these steps until you have the finish and precision you expect.

    There are three options on the blackFoot product page.

    Two options include either electronics that use the USB interface, or parallel interface. Both of these options include stepping motors (two 425 oz-in and one 651 oz-in), motor drivers (two 3.0 amp and one 6.0 amp), power supply and either a parallel breakout board, or USB breakout board. The USB interface must be used with the planet-cnc software. The parallel interface can be used in a wider variety of control software but will require a parallel port on your computer. If a parallel port doesn't exist, you can purchase a PCI parallel port adapter (for desktop computers only).

    The other option does not include electronics. This option is if you already have electronics, motors and drivers that will work with this machine, or you wish to purchase the redLeaf or redSprout assembled and plug and play CNC electronics and computer system.

    CamBam specifically creates the g-code (machining operations) instructions to be loaded into Mach3. Make sure in your CamBam g-code file parameters, you are using the Mach3 post processor. If you have already done this, let me know. If you are not sure how to do this, let me know.
