  • How long is the typical build time for one of our machines.

    The greenBull machine has a sturdier gantry than the blackFoot, so you can be more agressive with the cutting feedrate (cutting speed). The blackFoot is also a good machine, but it all comes down to the speed at which you want to produce your arcade cabinets.

    I would highly recommend getting the spindle for cutting strength and easier cleanup, if you have 240v available.

    All of our machines are a week lead time, other than the greenLean which is 2 weeks. Depending where your current location is,shipping will take anywhere from 1 week in the US, 1-5 weeks over seas.

  • what options can you offered to international customers to assist in them building one of your machines? International shipping of a kit would be too expensive.

    We are able to ship internationally but unfortunately we cannot control the shipping costs incurred for international customers. However, if you are associated with educational programs or Makerspaces and/or Fab Labs we do offer certain discounts in some cases.     The available options for the blackFoot, is only structural components with hardware, and structure components/hardware with electronic components.
    However we currently do not have any plans available for public use/distribution.

    That is a good question. We have not tried to weld thermoplastics using our CO2 Lasers. It is possible since the laser outputs a heat source and at the right intensity and speed, the thermoplastic can be heated and melted rather than instantaneously vaporized and off gassed. I have done research to see if CO2 laser can weld thermoplastics with positive results.

    Our CO2 lasers are typical of other laser cutters on the market, so if their literature, or examples you have found, successfully weld thermoplastics, then ours will probably be able to as well.

    In some cutting test with different speeds and intensities, the kerf has welded back together; however, this was caused by an unintentional process rather than an intentional one.

    That is correct, the only manner to get our machines is to buy one of our kits. We do not provide or sell our plans, the only CNC machine you can find on our website will be the scratch build kit and plans which is a 20' x 40' , (https://buildyourcnc.com/Documents/CNC%20Kit%201-1.pdf).

    Yes, we have the optional table for the blackToe, but we need to fabricate it, which only takes one day. We generally reserve one week for the total fabrication and packing of all parts.

  • I couldn't find any information about how to mount the "z-axis lead screw in the book" (Build Your Own CNC)

    The details will differ depending on the type of lead screw you use.

    For allthread lead screws, you will need the 1/2" square nut, 1/2" allthread lead screw, two 1/4" screws and nuts to hold the square nut in place, two 1/2" ID bearings, two standard 1/2" nuts, and one coupling hub.

    Attach the square nut to the nut support using the two 1/4" screw and nuts. The bearings will need to be inserted into the seats of the lower and upper part of the z-axis. Insert the lead screw through the top bearing. Use one of the standard 1/2" nuts and start threading it on the allthread screw just below the bearing. Lower the lead screw to the square nut and start to screw the lead screw into the square nut. Continue until the screw is near the lower bearing. Add another standard 1/2" nut to the screw and keep turning the screw until the screw just passes the lower bearing. Add the coupling hub to the top of the screw just above the upper bearing. Turn the lower and upper standard 1/2" nuts until they are snug against the bearing. If the standard 1/2" nuts become loosened, consider adding another nut to each end against the existing nut to keep them in place.

    For 1/2" acme 5 start lead screws, you will need to use an antibacklash nut in place of the square nut. This nut attaches with a flange using two #8 screws and nuts. The standard 1/2" nuts are replaced by clamping collars.

    Cellular phones are designed to be safe for both the user and anyone standing nearby. Cellular phones are actually small radios that transmit signals to and from base-station antennas located on towers or buildings in the nearby neighborhood. Cellular phones use low-power radio signals, even weaker than CB, police, or fire radios.

    The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets safety standards for human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic energy in the United States. Government agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and many states recognize and accept the ANSI RF safety standard. Also, the United States standard for RF energy is comparable to those set in other countries.

    Cellular phones and cellular-phone base stations have been shown to meet these RF safety standards. Safety standards for RF energy are threshold standards. Threshold standards define the level of RF energy above which there may be health or safety hazards and below which there have been no reported harmful effects. Unlike ionizing radiation, which many people believe to act cumulatively even at small exposure levels, RF energy at low levels is not considered a cumulative hazard. Therefore the consensus of scientific experts in this area is that RF exposure from cellular phones, meeting the threshold levels set in safety standards, is safe for all.

    The specific answer to the question is that cellular phone technology is safe for all. There is no danger posed by either handheld phone units or by base-station antennas. In both cases, the radio signals transmitted from the antennas are required to meet the ANSI safety standard for RF safety as embodied in FCC regulations governing this technology.   • BUILDING ONE OF YOUR GREENBULL 6X LONG AND 2.2 KILOWATT SPINDLE DOES NOT FIT. SEEMS LEAD SCREW YOU SENT WITH KIT IS SHORT 42" LOOKS LIKE IT NEEDS TO BE 5 OR 6 INCH LONGER. THIS CORRECT? WHAT THE NEEDED LENGTH FOR UNIT?

    These machines are inherently dangerous. Before the machine moves, the machine should be clear of any person by a dimension of at the distance of a persons reach plus a few more feet. This is the policies we institute in our shop and what is recommend to all of our customers. Treat these machines as you would treat any major power tool in the shop.

    With that said, you can certainly add some protective parts, but still keep folks away even with those installed. I would use the gantry side to do all of the mounting of the protective parts. Consider using sheet metal that you can bend and make a simple installation right on the gantry side.

    Yes, we have fully assembled machines that come complete with the spindle (and laser if needed) with sizes ranging from 1'x2' all the way up to 6'x12' or longer. We can also make custom fully assembled machines with other sizes. All of these machines are perfect for very intricate detailed work including but definitely not limited to sign making, bas relief, cabinetry, architectural model making, engraving, machine parts, automotive, custom sound enclosures (automotive or other), and other scientific application which we have delivered machine for many types of these applications.

  • What are the tolerances of your machines?

    The tolerance of our machines, like any machine, depends on several variables. The major variables include the manufacturing tolerance, the type of machine control used, the precision of assembly, the thoroughness of maintenance, and the initial and ongoing calibration of the machine. Because we sell kits only most of these variables are outside our control. Therefore, we are hesitant to guarantee a certain level of tolerance for an end user. However, in our experience, tolerances of .001" are readily achievable with our machines.

    What is the likely tolerance one could achieve without continual frustration and months of tinkering?

    Additional Information:
    We actually do very little tinkering with our production machine. The wood has a very small coefficient of linear expansion as compared to metals and plastic, so calibration is reduced to a very infrequent state.

    As with all machines, the determination of backlash in all parts of the machine is important, managing the tightening of these points of adjustment is necessary, but are still done infrequently.
