Question: Under what conditions should the LED on the 3d printer driver be lit when the driver is connected to the MB?

Current Solution

The driver's LED serves to indicate a fault condition. The driver chip has built in protection for overheating and over current. If the LED is on, most likely, the driver will stop until the condition is resolved. If you see the LED on, adjust the vref trimmer. First, connect a multimeter to the pads just next to the trimmer potentiometer and adjust until the voltage is lowered a bit. Alternatively, even though the PCB contains a vast amount of thermal vias and a relatively large ground plane connected to the belly of the driver, there still may be a need to cool the driver chip using a small heat sink. Do this only if you are not satisfied with the performance of the motor at the torque require.

    This will depend on the 3D printer that you are using and the mechanics involved. Specifically regarding the motor drivers, software is really what determines the speed of the motor. If the computer is not able to product the high number of pulses that is required for faster motion, then you can reduce the microstepping and configure the software appropriately for the new microstepping so the resolution is corrected (steps/inch or steps/mm).

    This is correct if it is the Mach3 USB controller. You will also get a rapid flashing led if you jog the machine (assuming the machine is not in reset mode or e-stop mode).

  • My Nema 24 motors make high pitched alarm sound when changing directions quickly - what could be the cause? Red LED is lit on Microstep Driver CW230 but everything seems to run fine - is this a problem?

    Stepper motors are known to make different type of noises when in motion. So there should be no issues in regards to accuracy with the steppers. You also might be able to lower the noise that comes from the motors, by adjusting the acceleration and velocity of the motors. This usually tends to either make different noises or lowers the pitch of the noises.

  • What are the EN connections used for on the QJ8060 motor driver? I notice that your video seems to leave them unconnected.

    The EN terminal on the QJ8060 driver and all of our other stepping motor drivers is the enable terminal. We don't use this terminal and the driver will function properly if left unconnected.

  • The parallel break out board on the Blacktooth machine has the parallel 25 pin socket, and also a usb socket. Should this usb socket be connected to the computer's usb port as well as the printer cable being connected to the printer socket?

    The parallel breakout board has the db25 connector for data and the USB connector for power. Connect the USB from the computer to the parallel breakout board so the breakout board will have 5V of power coming from the computer. The db25 connector (connector with the 25 pins) receive data signals for each pin from 1 to 17 and have respective numbered screw terminals, some for input and some for output (18 to 25 are gnd pins).

    There are three main LED fault signals that the DM556 and DM442 drivers exhibit. There is a red and green LED. The red LED will show the fault signals.

    The fault signals are:

    - Over-Current: If there is continuous current that is above 16 amps, the Red LED will flash every three seconds. Over-current could be related to: a short in the motor coils, or two of the wires of the motor are shorted; of the motor wires/coil is shorted to ground.

    - Over-voltage: If the power supply output to the driver exceeds a voltage of 52 volts, the red LED will flash twice every three seconds.

    - Phase Error: Is the motor wires are not connect, or they are connected incorrectly, the red LED will flash four times every three seconds.

    The motors could be wired incorrectly causing them to lock up. Make sure to check the wiring to make sure the X and Y are connected to the correct terminals.

    You can find a diagram that describes the pin-out for the 2.5 am Driver that is intended for the 3D Printer Main Board, but can be used as a standalone driver as well.

  • I cannot turn the shaft of my stepper motor. It not even connected to a driver

    The motor is creating it's own EMF when you try to turn the shaft manually. When coils are connected (or not connected) to any circuit that is not powered can cause unpredictable results.

    The motor freezing from just turning it by hand with no connection is surely the wires touching each other. This is actually how we test if a motor is good or bad. If the motor freezes when two of the wires are touching, that means the motor is functioning properly since the magnets are causing current to flow through that coil opposing the magnet.

  • Should the spindle be connected to ground PE?

    The protective earth should be connected to the spindle housing in some way. Sometimes the 4th pin is already connected to the housing, but not always. It is always good to check by removing the 4 screws of the connector to confirm this. If it is not, you can use one of the connector screws as a way to connect the PE to the spindle housing. The screws of the connector has a direct connection to the housing of the spindle.

    If you are using shielded wire between the motor and driver, the shielded portion (the reflective jacket within the insulated portion of the wire) and any spare wires, or stranded wire should all be grounded and be inserted into the GND terminal on the driver.

    The parallel breakout board has a relay that can turn the router on and off according to the control software in the computer. The router will turn on automatically prior to the machine moving (a time frame can be set so the router is up to speed). When the machine is finished and is not moving, the router automatically turns off. This is with the m3, m4, and m5 codes in the g-code.

    If you are interested in the USB breakout board, you will need to get an independent relay board.

    We are using the 1/2" rods in the gantry now. You can opt to purchase 1/2" rods and new gantry sides which will accept 1/2" ID bearings.

    Integrated computer for our blackFoot means, that the computer components will be included with that kit. Meaning that a motherboard(mini itx) with a on-board processor, RAM, HDD and power supply is sent.
    So the blackTooth will be a all in one kit, excluding any software with the price.

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PRINTER CABLE PORT AND USB MOTOR KITS

    The parallel (printer cable) port is uses the computer as its main source of pulse trains to operate the motor driver directly. Parallel ports are a direct connection from the processor commonly referred to as GPIO pins (General Purpose I/O pins) and provides a convenient and powerful way to interface with the computer. The parallel breakout board is included in those kits only to condition those signals for use with the drivers.

    The USB serves at the actual controller, sending the pulse trains, but the computer sends simple human readable instructions to the USB controller to tell the controller how to send pulses.

    The non-technical differences that may serve as the most important information to you is that the parallel configurations allow for a wider variety of industry standard software that can be used to control the cnc machine. The USB that we offer requires the operator to use a software called Planet-CNC software which is a very well made and feature full cnc control software.

  • What is the cp- and cw- on the 2.5 Stepper motor driver modular unit. my motor will not run. i believe this is my wireing issue

    Nema-17/23 are wired, notice that the nema-23 has a white and orange wire (those are not needed):
    Black to A+
    Green to A-
    Red to B+
    Blue to B-

    Also if using a parallel breakout board the wiring from the driver (https://www.buildyourcnc.com/item/electronicsAndMotors-parallel-breakout-relay#prettyPhoto/2/):

    Additional Information:
    I have USB breakout board connected as: CW-> 5V, CP -> CP, and GRD to GRD/COMM next to 12-24V Pin.
    The motor works perfectly in one direction.
    Will not jog in the other Direction.
    I still do not know what is CP- and CW- as it is not labeled on the board, unlike your other motor controllers.
    Can you submit a wiring diagram for the 2.5 AMP controller

  • I AM USING USB BREAKOUT BOARD WITH PLANET-CNC SOFTWARE. WHEN ENABLE JOGGING KEYBOARD X AXIS STARTS TO MOVE BY ITSELF (WHETHER CONNECTED OF NOT). PRESS STOP - IT STOPS FOR A MOMENT AND THEN AGAIN. WHAT COULD THAT BE? TRIED REINSTALL SOFTWARE DID NOT HELP.

    It seems to be getting some kind of interference or a short within the wiring or communication, try jogging the motors in the software without anything wired to the board. Then add one motor at a time to see if there is a short within your wiring or a faulty driver/motor.
