Question: Can’t find info about all three lead screws in you book or how to secure them

The details will differ depending on the type of lead screw you use.

For allthread lead screws, you will need the 1/2" square nut, 1/2" allthread lead screw, two 1/4" screws and nuts to hold the square nut in place, two 1/2" ID bearings, two standard 1/2" nuts, and one coupling hub.

Attach the square nut to the nut support using the two 1/4" screw and nuts. The bearings will need to be inserted into the seats of the lower and upper part of the z-axis. Insert the lead screw through the top bearing. Use one of the standard 1/2" nuts and start threading it on the allthread screw just below the bearing. Lower the lead screw to the square nut and start to screw the lead screw into the square nut. Continue until the screw is near the lower bearing. Add another standard 1/2" nut to the screw and keep turning the screw until the screw just passes the lower bearing. Add the coupling hub to the top of the screw just above the upper bearing. Turn the lower and upper standard 1/2" nuts until they are snug against the bearing. If the standard 1/2" nuts become loosened, consider adding another nut to each end against the existing nut to keep them in place.

For 1/2" acme 5 start lead screws, you will need to use an antibacklash nut in place of the square nut. This nut attaches with a flange using two #8 screws and nuts. The standard 1/2" nuts are replaced by clamping collars.

    We sell leadscews and anti-backlash nuts at the moment. Ballnuts will be available from us in the future.

    Specifically to your question, you want 0.001" resolution:

    The formula: (we are looking for a minimum of 1000 steps per inch
    steps = (motors steps)/(travel with one motor rotation)

    steps = (200 natural motor steps) x (microsteps ) / 0.5" travel (1/2" leadscrew 10 TPI 5 Starts)

    steps = 200 * microsteps / 0.5"

    multiply both sides by 0.5":

    steps * 0.5" = 200 * microsteps

    divide both sides by 200:

    (steps * 0.5") / 200 = microsteps

    replace steps with 1000:

    (1000 * 0.5") / 200 = microsteps

    500 / 200 = microsteps

    2.5 microsteps will provide .001"

    I would recommend 4 microsteps (1/4 microstepping), so your formula will be as follows:

    steps = steps/inch = (200 * 4) / 0.5" = 800 / 0.5" = 1600 steps/inch

    Yes, you can use a hack saw as these lead screws are not hardened.

  • If using a grease how does one protect leadscrews and rails from corian dust etc.

    If you have abrasive particles in the air from milling, you will want to periodically clean the mechanical parts like the lead screw and anti-backlash nuts. After cleaning the parts, all of the high friction parts that will be in constant contact, lubricating the parts with oils, grease or other lubricants. If the part is of steel material, that material will definitely need to be oiled, greased or lubricated so minimal oxidation will affect the exterior of the steel parts.

    The anti-backlash nut is made of Delrin, so petroleum chemicals like oils, grease or lubricants are ok to use. Abrasive particles may affect the anti-backlash nut over time; however, the spring and bushing of the anti-backlash nut will provide extensive use regardless of the wear.

  • how to calibrate stepper motors with ballscrews In mach3

    The easy way is to use Mach3's calibration process to calibrate the axis with the ballscrew coupled to the stepper motor. This is done in the settings tab of Mach3 and clicking the button just above the "Reset" button called "Set Steps Per Unit". A dialog box will appear asking how far you want Mach3 to move that axis. Mach3 will move that axis at a distance that is determined by the existing steps per unit value set in the motor tuning dialog box (config menu -> motor tuning). Not knowing the distance that this axis will travel, it's best to use a very small value.

    The more difficult way and the technique that should be used to create the initial value for the step per unit in the motor tuning dialog box. Use the steps/unit formula. This example will use inches.

    Steps/Inch
    = ((motor natural steps) x microsteps) / (the travel for one complete revolution)

    The travel for one revolution would be the distance a ball nut will travel with one complete turn of the ball screw. This is generally the number of starts / threads per inch. Say the ball screw has 5 starts (5 threads starting from the beginning of the screw) and 10 threads per inch (TPI), then the travel for one complete turn of the screw would be 5/10, or 1/2".

    Say you set the microstepping to be 1/4 on the stepper motor driver and your stepper motor has 200 natural steps per revolution (1.8 degrees per step), then the total steps would be 200 x 4 = 800.

    So, the steps/inch is 800 / 1/2" = 1600 steps per inch

    If the turns per inch on a lead screw is different, then the nut on the lead screw will move at a different velocity.

    Additional Information:
    Let me explain in more detail.

    Let's say you have two lead screws:

    - 1/2" 5 starts at 10 TPI = 2 turns per inch. (5 starts / 10 TPI = 1/2 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 5 Starts = 2 turns per inch.)

    - 3/8" 2 starts at 10 TPI = 5 turns per inch. (2 starts / 10 TPI = 1/5 inches per turn or 10 TPI / 2 starts = 5 turns per inch.)


    So, if two stepper motors (one connected to the 1/2" lead screw and the other connected to the 3/8" lead screw) turned 10 revolutions in 2 seconds, the 1/2" lead nut would travel 5 inches and the 3/8" lead nut would travel 2 inches at the 2 second mark.

  • I'm trying to hook up the Spindle Cooling Kit with 12VDC Power Supply. I have all the tubes plumbed but can't figure out how to hook up the wires. The power supply you sent only has 2 AC input and 2 DC output screws. The fan has 2 wires and the pump has three and both have a JST connector. How do I wire them in?

    The 12V power supply has 3 terminals for AC in: N, L and earth ground. The output of the 12V power supply has 2 DC + and - terminals. Cut the connectors off of the ends of the fan and pump wires. Strip the red and black wires of both units. The fan will connect to the 12V power supply red to the + and black to the -. The pump will connect in the same way, but the white is not connected.

    The precision and number of starts for a lead screw will depend on the application. Having an ACME lead screw with 5 starts is a good balance for many applications so the machine will travel quickly along the axes with motors that hold best torque at low RPM. All three axes would benefit from 5 start lead screw for general applications.

    Inside Diameter: 1/2" (actual dimension 0.4975 inches or 12.63 mm)

    - Outside Diameter: 1.122 inches or 28.4988 mm

    Use a clamping collar (if you are using an ACME lead screw) or a couple of 1/2 nuts (if using an allthread) against the bearing to keep the bearing in place and make sure there is no axial play.
